Quoting myself because of the stupid bottom of the page.

Re Armando: Ammo-swaps aren't penalized. Given the sheer nature of Ammo, though, that would be pretty dumb. Turning off /equip, though, is an interesting concept.

No one's arguing that, and no one really expects people to have the highest tier gear for all their jobs (especially the rarest stuff), what we're arguing is the necessity for gear swapping.

Granted, if I don't have a particular piece I can't swap it in, but if I have it and it's good in some instances but not others, I'll put it on when I need it and replace it when I don't.

I'm not disagreeing with the notion that penalizing RNG for ammo swapping is silly, because it is. However, I still don't buy for a second that it's time-consuming to make a PvP macro set, no matter the job. A hassle? Sure. But it can't possibly take very long, and you only have to do it once.

All that aside, and this really has nothing to do with my point, it'd be bad if they prevented you from changing equipment at all. If I accidentally had the wrong thing on when the match started, or if I realized a certain piece of equipment really isn't helping me at all, I wouldn't be able to change it. Turning off the /equip text command so you can't change gear via macros would be a better solution.

I agree. I certainly don't have top tier anything, and I do ok. But I do have different sets. That's just common sense.

Gear is an important aspect of the game, but I feel like too many people try to rely on that alone. A competent player will try to gear their character with what they have available, and some people are not able to have the top tier. It would not make sense to remove it from the game, but I would like to see a change in some attitudes reflecting the topic. People acquire gear, it generally does not just appear on your body.

My apologies, I totally missed the boat on this one.

In World of Warcraft you have to switch out gear for resists, whether that is for hitting the monster more often or not getting hit by it that often. How do element resists work in FFXI? I am sure it is not exactly the same as WoW.

He said if gear was inconsequential it would make the game boring...and he's right. Whats the point of killing much of anything once you hit 75 if you have not chance of bettering your own character or that of one of your friends?

Gear is not a FRILLY MECHANIC. I mean, Jesus.

Is today the day you decided that you were going to really make it clear just how little you understand about the game?

I don't know which game you're playing, but FFXI disagrees. This game will be fun no matter what kind of frilly mechanic gets removed.

I mean, it's not like the entire game lies within the act of gear-swapping itself: might as well call it "Barbie Fantasy 11" in that case.

If I don't write the new macro set, then I have to do two things:

    1. Put a huge amount of R/E gear away in my MH
    2. Put non-R/E in my bazaar for max gil.

Both lead to macro error messages in the log

SE could just slap all players with a status that prevents the equipping of gear - hell, that's already in the game in Salvage. Use that. SE could also actually try for a reward system in PvP that was actually worth a damn. There's no good gear to get for this except stuff that just facillitates more Ballista. That's nice and all, but rewards that could be used elsewhere would be nice and it would make more players want to PvP if the rewards were that good.

No, it's the way the game works. If gear was inconsequential, this game would get real boring, real fast.

how do you figure, sports fan?
gear swaps are part of the game. are you suggesting SE put in the macros for gear swaps just to make your life a little easier when you changed jobs?

The fact that it's needed in order to just see some results is pretty sad. To resort to using all that should be overkill.

But he's saying that you shouldn't have to use gear swaps and elemental staves to avoid resists. Or something.
