Yes they can. Grey Beard approach, remain neutral and just be awesome because you're the goddamn Dovahkiin.

The Dragonborn can't really win, huh. Just finished the Civil War quests. In my continuity, some history books will remember the Dragonborn of this era as the Nord that sold Skyrim out to the elves.

Its just the opposing side of the same scenario, in which the Imperials - including the woman who shouted you to the chopping block - attack youl Both NPCs you follow out have family and friends in Riverwood that help you get started, talk about you going to Whiterun and such. If you come across Stormcloaks on the road or sympathizers and they speak of going to Winterhold to join Ulfric, the Miscellaneous quest is just dropped into you log like the Imperial side was. The guys you followed out of Helgen will also be contacts within the civil war story.

Yeah, that is basically it. I suspect the party lines are drawn based on who you first decided to follow after the attack on Helgen. I followed Hadvar. And so a lot of the early dialogue was from an Imperial sympathizer point of view. Meanwhile, you're being attacked by Stormcloaks, largely portrayed as little more than thuggish bandits. Then you are off to Whiterun, a hold that is largely prosperous because of their (admittedly loose) allegiance to the Empire. Maybe they thought, by setting you up to be executed by the Empire in the beginning, you'd be more inclined to join the Stormcloaks. But honestly, when you're first thrusted into the game, you're apparently just somebody trying to sneak across the border and really have no idea what's going on in Skyrim.

Anybody want to tell me what happens if you follow that other guy who is not Hadvar?

In doing a lot of questing, you'll find that both sides of the conflict are willing to get their hands extremely dirty, as the civil war story does seep into other storylines on occasion. For example, General Tullius and Ulfric Stormcloak have an interest in the rather corrupt city of Markarth, which the Silver-Blood family has great influence over and will pretty much imprison anyone and throw them in the prison mines if they ask to many questions.

If you've encountered the Forsworn, there's a bit of a story there and the initial quest is triggered in Markarth after you walk in.

The civil war is ultimately a flavor event and just pick whoever you sympathize the most with, because honestly both sides are incredibly dirty. Do you want to support a weakened Empire that is now the puppet of a Elven supremacist regime or the strongly nationalistic and racially distrustful (at least to elves, though Khajit and Argonian don't get it much better) Stormclocks? Even with those facts aside, there are the ideals other NPCs hold - from the simple desire to protect your home and way of life, to living in unified empire.

The Stormcloaks aren't exactly inherently racist, its more to the end that a group of real racists came in one day and started telling them how to live and act. The Aldimiri Dominion hates all non-elven races and that pretty much includes all elves that aren't High Elves, too. By the same token, the Empire wasn't exactly given a choice about abolishing Talos worship or have any say in what the Thalmor Justicars of the Dominion do. They don't really like the Dominion, but they did lose the war to them.

As Dovahkin, they'll both want you on their side, even if they hate your race otherwise.

People seem to decide based on who they perceive as the most racist, but the world is never really that black and white. The Stormcloaks want pure unadulterated freedom, which comes with a lot of risk and the Empire just wants to restore order at the expense of any real recognizable freedom it once held as they did under the Septims line of Emperors.

If they do expansions that go back into Cyrodil and Morrowind, I think you'll find which side you chose in Skyrim really doesn't matter as there are other problems and conflicts taking place across the land under different motives.

Do whatever the hell you feel like doing. That's pretty much the entire premise behind this kind of open world sandbox game.

They're both assholes, but I sympathize with the Empire.

If you are wondering which side to choose and want to base it on good vs evil, I'll just tell you they are both asshats. Bethesda did a pretty decent job of making both sides equally douche(y?).

Stormcloaks are rebels but you could also consider them patriots (kinda U. S. vs Brittain 1700's). The Empire is an invader but you could also consider their actions to be international policing (kinda U.S. vs Iraq/Afghanistan recently). There really is not a good or bad side so far that I've found. Maybe others could enlighten me to if there actually is a good side or an evil side and what the underlying motivations really are...

I ran into some Stormcloak camps and some camps of another army. They were both peaceful, so I didn't know which ones to kill. Is it bad that I'm that far off the main sotry line I don't known whats going on? I'm just going from town to town, doing side quest by side quest... Stormcloaks are the rebels or the guys wanting to take over Skyrim? BBQ i need your lore help! Who are you supporting?

*Potion of Cure Disease. Should probably be specific or he'll use a Potion of Minor Healing and wonder why he's being chased out of towns the next day.

    Yesterday in Skryim:
Took over a few Stormcloak forts. And by "took over", I mean barged in and blasted Fireballs in every direction. Long live the empire.

You cure it by drinking a potion, or if you are already a vampire there was a quest to remove it.

You can also get a blessing from one of the Divines, that should cure it too.
