Kitase strikes again - FFVII remake would be hard to remake
The part where you run around constantly one step behind the bad guys trying to protect crystals that somehow hold the world together but otherwise have no actual protection (why, we'll never know) is a bit ridiculous as well. At least FFVII's plot devices don't require as much suspension of disbelief.
We just overlook these things because the games have redeeming qualities, be it the battle system, the characters or some twist on the plot along the way. So did FFVII regardless of how cool it is to harp on it. I like VI more than VII, but VII had better gameplay. Materia is a much more engrossing and fun system than the Esper-equipping one if you ask me.
'Intelligent geeks' who apparently have never held a job outside of the local computer parts dealer. This is a business and businesses have to have business justifications. If the predicted sales do not outstrip the predicted cost, the project is too hard to justify. Too hard is a valid phrase that means many things, not always really how hard it would be to actually do.
You think an HD version of FF7 would sell like hotcakes? SE might see sales numbers for the followup games, Advent Children and the sales of 7 on the playstation network and come up with a very different idea as to how well it would sell.
Gamers also seem to believe they're masters of marketing and demographics. I just read about how FFXIII is going to be marketed on some NBA All-Star game thing and people were talking shit about how the NBA is the wrong market. That they should be spending that money marketing to peopel who like RPGs.
Who the fuck that is into RPGS that doesn't know about FFXIII right now? You'd have to have your head buried up your ass and be buried in the sand not to know it, they're going to market it to people that aren't the usual audience to expand the audience. That's the point of advertising, particularly advertising games with sports.
As for the fucktard arguement "OMG an FFVII remake would sell tons."
Allow me to drag out the DEAD HORSE known as Metal Gear Solid.
People swore up and down that if a remake of MGS ever happened, it would "sell tons."
OK, guys, where was everyone on MGS: Twin Snakes? Best action game on the original Playstation got a remake.
What's your excuse? C'mon, out with it.
I know it didn't sell tons. Neither did Resident Evil's. They broke even, maybe even made a respectable profit, but those games never had to go beyond the kinds of trappings their predecessors did, either. Pre-rendered backgrouds, small games, short length It probably was easy to break even on them, even after voice work.
And lets not ignore the facts here, FFVII was only one of Playstation's success stories, MGS and RE were the other big ones. If they couldn't sell like gangbusters on their remakes, what makes you think that FFVII will do better, particularly with all its JRPG leanings and all that it would require as an HD remake?
If SE isn't willing to risk it, that means they know things about the situation that you don't. Don't forget that even with FFXIII and FF Vs. XIII committed, there have be no other committed exclusives from SE anywhere.
That speaks volumes. SE doesn't want to find themselves where EA or 2k Games are right now. They're playing this shit smart just like Nintendo does. They're watching, waiting and making acquisitions along the way.
You don't just go out there and bleed money because people want you to, that's fucking stupid. Squaresoft has teetered at the brink twice before for their ambitions, but I doubt they'll ever be that crazy as SE.

Please do not insult my friends especially since you don't even know them. Some of them have been in the industry for 20+ years and agree that SE could do it and should have done it instead of some of the other fluff they've released.

You can get your point across without attacking people so please do so in the future.
And Twin Snakes came out on the underappreciated Gamecube.....you know the system that people said they didn't buy because it was a Nintendo system and they only made kiddie games. Gee, that could be a HUGE reason why the game didn't sell.

More over, thanks to Crisis Core they could redo some of the older scenes, maybe toss in some of the bits from CC to better flesh out some parts.
Lord knows some of the dialogue (Sephiroth's especially) could use some tweaking. Hell they could even toss in some new materia for kicks. Though, redoing some of the summons might be a real pain in the ass, particularly KotR. HD Chocobo Raising & Racing ftw though. OOOO they could use Six-Axis for the motor cycle and snowboarding mini games as well!
Would there be an option to mute Sephiroth if they give him a voice an a FFVII remake? I spent my childhood expecting a man that feminine to sound like Seymour from FFX .

I see no "attack," anywhere. Period.
My point (mockingly so) was they want a remake... with conditions, as proven by Metal Gear Solid.
FFVII's condition would be Playstation 3, in HD. Put in on Xbox 360 or Wii and wait for an ocean of tears from the "loyal" Playstation audience. To me, putting it on those platforms would make more sense, Playstation has had a few helpings and catering to them isn't going to expand its market.
Even if they put it on PSP, they'd flip.
But, HD just seems to be the problem with FFXIII and a potential remake of FFVII. You say that Kitase's reasoning is "bullshit," but once agian, I'll point to how individualized assets were in FFVII just in pre-renders - to reproduce that in full 3D, in all the HD splendor and detail you'd expect, would cost a lot to make
Would you settle for less than that? Maybe a remake on the level of SSFII Turbo HD Remix? Pretter prerenders, remastered music, proportionate characters, better battle graphics, voice over and perhaps an expanded materia system and story?
I could live that, but why do i get the feeling others would complain? I think that's actually he best way to approach it, this way SE doesn't have to burn tons of cash and sacrifice other projects and put so many team members up to do it.

I never quite got there with hearing him that way, but I think George Newbern did him justice. He needed to say dark, sadistic, evil things while not sounding like Kefka and his understated way of doing it actually makes it sound more threatening. It also worked well when they had to humanize him in Crisis Core, he sounded genuine.
Also can't help but fell Dissidia was an audition for the other possible future remakes. I know some people complain about Terra's voice, but given her character it seemed to match. Kefka was pitch-perfect without riffing too hard on The Joker.
That said, SE never casts someone as a character without considering them for future reprisals of that same character, Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia very much seem to reflect this. The only exception I've see so far was Golbez.

Yes, yes I'm sure they did the financial work and weighed the scope of this development with how much manpower would be required with the other projects the company is undertaking. Obviously people who have 'been in the industry for 20+ years' know better then SE.
"I loved 7 and apparently so did a bunch of other people and other games are made on the PS3 so SE could and should do so and so" is not a business justification. SE never said it was impossible, they said it was too hard. If there is not justification for a project, it is too hard to undertake.
I'm going to have to default to the organization that has more information on the subject then the second and third hand input of people who "have been in the industry for 20+ years."

You called everyone making this arguemtn fucktards. IDC really, but I'd consider that an "attacking" statement.
Basing potential sales on past performance, with no consideration to present market saturation, declining interest in the genre and - most importantly - no consideration for cost - a bit ludicrous to me.
Maybe "ludicrous" would have been the nicer word to use, as it has no assumed target as an adjective.
I've seen no logical argument about how this "highly-demanded" remake could be done in a cost-effective way. I keep hearing anecdotal "overwhelming demand" when its really just the same people that have ben fapping themselves into a frenzy over the notion for the last five/six years. They refuse to believe its not happening each time SE says it isn't.
For a remake, all I want is hands that look like hands, instead of giants cubes. Is that too much to ask for?
I'd be just fine with just this, or as bbqkitten alluded to earlier, refreshed graphics (not completely FFXIII-ized, they could keep the same format with the backgrounds and everything, just update the character models and re-paint the backgrounds... which is still quite a bit of work but it's infinitely easier than rendering a city), a remastered soundtrack with some recorded music (like, ummm, oh right one winged angel), fix the grammar and add some sidestory or materia and you're good to go.

Kain (FFIV): I am aware of my actions, but can do nothing about them.

Yes, I could. Never once did I say "I have to have..." All I said is, a remaster. It seems they think that they need to do all the bells and whistles. Maybe they could spiff up the cut scenes really nice like SE is so fond of doing but just smooth out the rest.

And I can turn that right back at you and say with all of your knowledge about the industry, you know exactly how set SE is and if they could pull this off or not huh? You've done the numbers I take it and thats what you are basing your argument off?
Anyone thats been in the industry or been a gamer for any length of time, knows how they like to say "we aren't making another" or "that sequel will be out in 1998, 99, 00,..." or "its just not possible". Yet, somehow or another, many times things change and TA DA there it is or isn't. Lots of things developers say are half truths. There have been many times people have gotten hyped about a game because it was supposed to do this or have that and guess what? Yep, close to release..."oh we can't put that in there at this time" So yes, we should fall at SE's feet and kiss them and believe everything they say. Especially SE.

Yeah George Newburn did a great job with him, especially in Crisis Core. I liked Terra's voice a lot, I thought it was perfectly suited for her character without sounding like a stereotypical timid mage girl (though Terra does have a very good reason to act like she's scared of everything). As for Kefka, it's difficult to imagine him not being done in a Hamil's Joker style.
I think the voices in Dissidia I found myself most impressed with were:
Squall (fits his character perfectly)
Terra (stated above)
Zidane (The voice is EXACTLY how I always imagined his to be) Kuja (same as Zidane)
Garland (Fits him fine without going too overboard which his large Ham tendencies)
Firon (okay that's just because I'm a fan of Johnny Yong Bosch more than anything else >.>)
