Maybe SE should forget revenue for now, refund the purchases, and turn this into a public beta/alpha--then actually take note of the user complaints.

After all the major issues have been ironed out and additional contents added, then relaunch the game (with a new marketing campaign).

    It's ACP all over again.

They sold tons preorders of that scenario because people were expecting something completely different from what we got.

So as sad as it sounds pre-ordering games from SE is simply not a good idea anymore.

PS > Preordering is a sign of the costumer's trust in the developer, and once that trust is gone...

FFXIV: "Full power on regaining trust"

Since the launch of the Collector's Edition on 21st September and the launch of the Standard Edition on 30th September, Final Fantasy XIV has sold 630,000 copies around the world. Most of those were shifted in Europe (230,000 copies), with the US second (210,000 copies) and Japan last (190,000 copies).
Makes me wonder if they still nail EU's with maintenance in their primetime like FFXI.

You know, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, especially if that first impression is as bad as FFXIV's has been for most people.

Square-Enix has maybe 4 months (tentative launch date for FFXIV PS3) to fix the problems and win people back. Given their track record of "slow and steady" change... I don't see this happening.

Not that I think the PS3 version is that important from the viewpoint of actually winning too many new subscribers, but it's probably the last chance to convince people who have already given up on the game to even consider coming back. If anything goes wrong from here, I don't really see any way for FFXIV to recover. If the PS3 launch slips off target, they're toast. If the interface doesn't improve dramatically in the next few months, they're toast. If the game doesn't get some more newbie-friendly tutorials? Toast. Less stupendously murky gameplay (esp. with respect to crafting)? Toast.

S-E claims 630K sales, which is all well and good, but they've got only a very small time window to keep even a tiny fraction of those purchasers as regular subscribers. It will be interesting to see how many subscribers remain at the end of December, after Cataclysm launches.

Gamasutra - News - Square Enix Ships 630,000 FFXIV Copies, Working On 'Regaining Trust'
Despite complaints about the MMORPG from reviewers and players alike, Square Enix says it's shipped some 630,000 units of Final Fantasy XIV and hopes to start "regaining [subscribers'] trust."

In an investors briefing earlier today, the publisher's CEO Yoichi Wada said of those PC copies (available with a $49.99 version and a $74.99 collector's edition), 190,000 shipped in Japan, 210,000 in North America, and 230,000 in Europe. The company also said the PS3 edition of FFXIV is still slated to release next March.

"We're quickly working on reforms," said Wada, according to a report from Japanese newspaper Mainichi translated by Andriasang.com. The online game has received much criticism since its launch in September due to problems with lag, sparsely populated zones, missing explanations/guides for systems, and other issues.

Square Enix promised to extend the subscription-based MMORPG's (monthly charge of $12.99) free trial period last month due to "the current state of the game", and said it is working to improve FFXIV with future updates.

"We'd like to put our full power into regaining trust," said Wada. "If we satisfy our users, they will return. On the other hand, once the users say, 'forget this,' there's no turning back. We can only recover our trust so far."

I must admit that I did laugh at the term "extensive travels" in a brand new MMO
