There was a point to that post. A lot of earlier posts suggested BLMs could not make money. On the contrary, BLMs are one of the best jobs for making money. I find that using -ga spells helps farming money at earlier levels (since money-making is quite limited at earlier levels anyway), but at higher levels, BLMs have a variety of NMs at their disposal, some which they could even solo at a high level. I am just one example of this. The most depressing FFXI moment ever... http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/u...t/SNAG-783.jpg

Well im only 20, but i seem to have more money than other newbies, so i guess ill put here what i have been doing.
1-10 Crystals. Starting at level 6 take youreself to the NW most horutoto, the one by the outpost. Inside you find tons of easy goblins and bats, kill them. Save bat wings, any kinda cloth or thread you get, wild onions, and crystals. All are worth selling, or alternativly bat wings can be traded in sandy for 1.2k a stack, which is less than what they sell for at AH, but you also get fame. I made 20k with my BLM from 1 to 20 when i was first starting, this is AFTER buying spells. *but i didint bother with equipment untill i was levle 10*
10-20 Fish. Fishing takes dedication and a little time to get going, but is worth it, there may be slightly faster ways to make money at these levels, but fishing will be there for you forever, so you may aswell get started now. Get to windy and make sure you have some gil, 2k should do to start. Stop by the auction house and buy three stacks of Insect Balls, then run to the fishing guild in port windy and buy two bamboo fishing rods(and join the guild). Stop by the taru nearest the mithra on the docks, and get the 30gil fishing support. Head to windy waters, or anywhere really, and start fishing. Those two rods and three stacks of insect balls should catch you a stack of moat carp. Sell at auction for 4k. Sometimes it takes a wile to sell at that price, so sell lower if you want, but theres ALWAYS people who come in and buy up all the moat carp, so it will sell eventualy.
There are a few things to point out.
1. Get the fishing gear, i got my full set for 18k, just buy it as you go, starting with the cheaper pieces. It makes a differance. I took a 4 day break for fishing, you may want to just catch enough moat carp for youre spells and go, thats fine, but eventualy you will want to do this, so you may aswell now.
2. Bamboo rods are the best for a newbie, i will talk about other rods later but i used bamboo to skill level 5, and i sujest you do to.
3. The first two skill levels seem to take longer than the rest, im not sure why, iv talked to other people and they seem to agree with me on it, it may just be coincidence, but again, do NOT GET DISCOURAGED!
4. Once you have your fishing gear, and are a suitiable level, around 4 or 5, buy a carbon fishing rod and sabiki rig(from auction, its cheaper there). Go to port windy and fish sardines and quus. Save the quus! You will need them later, the sardines can be sold for around 4-600 at auction per stack, depending, or you can run the quest for 70gil each and windy fame by zoning into windy waters then comeing back to the fishing guild and trading one to the taru on the docks near the ramp to the fishing boat. The benifits of all this over carp may not be apparant yet, but most importantly, you should not loose youre rod or rig, unless you are TERRIBLY unlucky, i did fishing levels 5-8 there with the same rod and rig, and its a good change of pace as the fish will start flowing in, even if they arent worth as much.
Thats where i am now, i am fishing skill 9, and i forked out 19k for a composit fishing rod, this rod will not break on anything in windy and i plan on fishing some moat carp untill i can get the rogue rig and catch 3 at a time. I catch fish about twice as fast if not more as i did at level 0 with insect balls, fishing is worth it, just keep at it, it sucks in the begining. I have probibly near 2 days of played time spent fishing.
Level 20. Starting around level 20 you can do the steam clock quest in bastok, this is good for fame which you need for the warp spell, but more importantly its good money, moreso if you have warp. Remember those Quus i told you to save? This is where they come in, you should have about 3 stacks or more of them. So get youreself to bastok market and set youre HP in the upper (north) residential exit (change jobs at mog house and it ask you to set hp). With out warp it takes 13-14 minutes to run each quest, with warp i can do it in 8 flat, the reward is 500gil each time. If you didint fish, you can buy quus at the AH for about 1.5k, but sometimes they are all bought, alternativly you could buy some in windy or sandy, where they are cheaper and usualy more numerous.
1. Seperate some Quus from the stack(is this nessisary?) and leave bastok markets into S gustaburg.
2. Look on the map and in the east you should see a lighthouse, go there.
3. Behind the lighthouse you should see a ???. Trade it a single Quus and Bubbly Berny(or something like that, level10 crab) will spawn. Kill it and you get a Steam Clock, warp/run back to town making sure you go in and out of your mog house to refill MP either way.
4. Go to the lady in the house in the northmost part of bastok markets, to the east of the magic shop near the exit to the other part of town. She tells you that she lost something and some beast has it, that the last adventurer she sent scared it away and that you should figure out a way to lure it out. Well, you already did, and have the clock, so trade it to her and get 500 gill.
5. Repeat untill you pass out or have enough money for whatever you want.
I plan on fishing and or doing the above quest untill i have 60k, which is enough to buy the rest of the equipment and spells i need for my whm to have the best stuf i could possibly have at level 20(minus astrals, but as a taru i feel the MP i have is enough at this level, and the HP is needed so i really wouldnt wear them if i had them) I estimate it should take me no less than 5 days, and probibly a week. I dont mind. I see no differance in getting money, or getting exp. You need items and spells and food just asmuch as you need levels. The nice thing about spending time getting money for equipment, is you can always sell the equipment back when youv finished with it.

If you know anything, share. I die to "too weaks" unless I am fully healed more often than not, and making huge -ga trains is not worth the downtime.Kuno's super cool stats!

i too am a hume blm/whm of your level...i don't have too much problems killing too weak with a thf sub. a fairly decent place to farm is korroloka tunnel. gigas drops socks frequently, about once every 2 or 3 kills for a quick 2k while slimes drop oils, up to 3 per kill for 6k per stack on my server. slimes are highly resistant to melee damage so whacking away with staff or club (i suggest club, shining strike does good damage to slimes) could take a while but all in all, its still fairly good money...nowhere near 600k-1.2m per day, but about 10k or so per hour.

600-1.2mil gil a day I think your spending a lot of time in kuftal fighting anemit or phantom worm. Too bad cerberus market has been destroyed by greedy players for both of these items. The beast myth: "I hear it gets better next level"

Well since Asharu is being so secretive, ill give out his secret.
Odds are he camps Ose, an NM in the Labyrinth of Onzozo.
Which a lvl 75 BLM named Tigga on my server does often. He drops a cloth worth 500-600k and also the Assault Jerkin which is Rare-Ex and is good for melee's. Asharu dont be a prick, nobody is going to steal him from you.

Ose drops ose wisker and assult jerkin, ose wisker used to be 160, now it's 90k on my server, and you can't sell assult jerkin. I've fought him a few times and seen a level 75 thief/nin get demolished by him. I don't think he is solo'able by blm. Not to mention he uses a ton of silence and paralyze. The beast myth: "I hear it gets better next level"

No seriously, there is a BLM named Tigga who solo's it all the time, granted he has the best stuff, (kirins pole, diamond earrings etc.. and maxed enfeeble (hes a high level RDM as well)) But he does do it. I have seen him there 4 times, He sleeps, does a bunch of Dot's and enfeebles and then ancients, sleeps on and on. takes him a while but he kills it consistently.

Any hints about it? Is it something that needs phalanx? Does it drop stackable stuff? Does it take the top of the line gear?Originally posted by Asharu

Im only a level 18 Black Mage and Im VERY poor. I dont really wanna fish because my first pole broke after 6 uses which irratated me. So what can I do to get some gil. I need 8k for Warp unless I can go right to Bastok and get the Warp quest. Not only that but I just got my sub and I have to level White Mage and buy the scrolls up to level15. Im behind in my current equipment. I still need two Eremite Rings, two Onyx Earrings, Sages Circlet or something or that sort, and Magic Belt and some kind of staff be it Legionaires or Freesword. I need a way to get some gil rather quickly without halting the leveling process. Just remember im currently an 18 Black Mage supporting job is a level 8 White Mage, got any ideas?Creon Arcais - Rank 6 San d'Orian

nothing you can do will make you money without halting leveling. If you want to keep top gear, you'll have to take a day or two (at most) off of leveling and start farming.
Main things:
Now that you have a subjob, level warrior with /whm from 1-5. Then, take your warrior into the Horutoto Ruins in East Sarutabaruta. Level from 5-11 here. Rinse and repeat with any number of jobs. I can usually make a good 20-30k just off crystals and other drops. If it's camped, just go to a different tower (there are 3 in saruta). For The Horde!!
Current Gil total spent on gear:
3,235,000
Current Gil Value of gear:
1,151,000
Laughing when new players complain about prices:
Priceless
