Ok been reading this thread as it went along just smiling to myself. I've been gaming for 30+ years. One thing I know is when you should and shouldn't. Been there, done that. You can get in too deep no matter what people think. But comparing a professional person's life to that of someone that MAY be in too deep is TOTALLY asinine. Please, that person that is dedicated to his job is saving lifes, REAL ones. That person is making REAL money to support a family and him or herself. Sitting in front of a computer for ENTERTAINMENT does not constitute a correlation between someone's rl job.

If you want to compare someone that plays video games for many hours every day, then compare it to someone that watches movies for many hours every day. Someone that plays card/board games (not gambling) for many hours every day. etc. FFXI is entertainment, not a job.

The definition of "having a life" is to have a multifaceted life. To have many things in your life going on to enjoy and some not so enjoyable. People have relationships (family, lovers), jobs, social life with other irl people, paying bills, sometimes health issues, etc. Entertainment takes up a very small piece of the pie in a balanced life.

In Japan, gamers (in general whether this type or anything they play) they play to be the best at what they do. They want to be as good if not better than the next person that's playing with them or around them. Take this example, 1 the top players in Japan in the game called Street Fighter. His name is Umehara Daigo. The so called beast of Japan. He spends 8 hours a day on Street Figher before, breaking the game down to how far range a limb is to how many frames it takes from start, hit, on block stun and recovery. 8 freaking hours and that's on the first day of the game. People wonder why he's such a great player?? It's cause he spends time in the game.

This guy (if it's real) has done just that. Spent all his time playing the game, and hasn't stopped since. And probably spends far more time than anyone in the game cause he wants to be the best at what he's doing. Typical JPN's mentality. What's weird is, maybe to them this is normal. Something he loves doing like how most people love going to parties, hanging out with friends, and socializing. To that guy, this is it. Can we blame him?? No. Can we judge him? why would we?? Again, before everyone starts saying "he has no life" look at yourself first and then ask that question. I'm not implying that you yourself doesn't have one, that's not what i'm trying to say here, but stop and ask yourself first before passing on a judgement to someone. Instead of going "I guess SE hates us" we get comments like "finally a reward for not having any life".

That's the problem with our society. We look at gamers and we laugh at them, make fun of them or even degrade them. Instead of being happy for the guy, we instead trash on him, and say "he has no life" comments. I guess the only way you can actually get somewhat of a consolation out of shit like this, is if you make a living out of it, and even that we frown upon (uh..gil sellers anyone?). That's why FPS and Online Strat players aren't made fun off unlike Fighting game players or MMO players because FPS and OS players make money out of their tournaments while the fighting game community only gets small tournament gatherings that probably yields only about 10% of a FPS/OS tournament winnings and MMO's has no tournament based style to hold any type of a tournament like the FPS and OS tournaments. By having that reason alone, if you spent time in the game everyone says you don't have a life. /sigh. Well to me, grats to him (if he has actually done it).

      JP

P.S. Now if this is fake, then i'm all for making fun of him.
I didn't read most of the posts beyond page 3, but after reading this one, I just gotta say AMEN to that! Seriously, all that was needed to be said is in this post. This is why I wish I lived in japan sometimes, not because I like their games, or I like their food, and style and all that. But because gamers are not looked upon as only being geeks or losers like here in the states!

Anyway, I saw so much talk as to wheather or not the all lv75 thing is true or not, I don't really care. What I'm curious about is, it the Maat's cap really real or not??? I'm leaning towards it not being real, unless someone can tell me otherwise, because in both the pics of that Mumu guy, he shows the maat's hat in his equipment, but we never actually see it on his head.

      Any info on this?

I obviously opened up a can of worms by my negative comments towards this gamer.

Let me clarify exactly what I mean.

I've been playing this game since the PS2 launch in NA, which is about 13 months. So far I have spent 107 RL days on this game. Do you understand how depressed I get when I look at my playtime? I dont consider myself "hardcore" but to others who dont play this type of game, I could be considered insane. I've played this game for over 2500 hours in a little over 1 year. I estimate 6.8 hours per day average. On week days I only have about 7 hours of free time from the time I get off work till I need to go to sleep. Every monday I go to work feeling like I completely wasted my weekend, since I really didnt do anything except play FFXI. Why do I keep going? I dunno... I like the game too much to slow down. It HAS interfered with my real life, and I've done my best to deal with it, however, I still follow a destructive pattern.

Where am I going with this? I've played 107 days, and dont even have 1 job at 75. For this person to get 15 jobs to 75 I cant even begin to imagine the drain on his life this might cause. Yes it makes him happy. Obviously it must, or he wouldnt do it. However, someone who plays this much is at a VERY unhealthy level. He has lost touch with reality, and basically lives in a game world. Lets be honest, theres no way he could have any kind of job, school, or commitments with that kind of playtime.

Icemage illustrated it best. Even IF this guy played 24/7 with no breaks since the game came out, all jobs at 75 would still be quite hard to achieve. Lets assume he plays 12 hours per day. Thats 4380 hours per year or 13140 hours since the game launched (give or take) Divide that by 15 jobs and you get 876 hours/job. Divide that by 24 hours and you get 36.5 real time days per job. Can someone level a job to 75 in 36.5 real days? I'm sure they can, but how likely is it? Especially with beastmaster.

Back to the point..one day he will wake up and realize he just threw 3 years of his life away for a videogame. I think the god status he's achieved in game is keeping him going, but one day that will fade.

I dont mean to insult him. I feel truly sorry for him. It should be noted that I dont consider him a geek or loser. (pot calling the kettle black if I did- I play this game too) I think his addiction to this game is out of hand. Wonder if he remembers what the sky looks like?

Do you really know what generation we live in today though? Games are not just time that is being wasted anymore. It hasn't been for a long time, and people keep on forgetting that! I'm going to college right now, for game development.

Reason I bring this up, is because we study all kinds of aspect of gaming in some of the courses I got. Occasionally we'll just discuss the business, sometimes we read articles about the business. Alot of the things we talk about and read, remind me of when I was a kid. I'm 21 right now, and people in my generation, and generations after have grown up with video games. It's the way we lived! I admit, not all kids played video games, but alot of them did. We grew up on systems like nintendo, genesis and super nintendo, and probably spent years playing those. So what if we were kids, we still could've been studying, or doing something more constructive, but no, we played video games. We have fond memories getting to a certain level in a game, like megaman, or metroid, super mario bros 3. And there were plenty of rpgs back then that took out many many hours of our lives as well.

I'm not just remembering my childhood either, i'm talking about some of the stuff we've read in class, where these execs at some big businesses now have these same types of fond memories, because they're in the mid-late 20s, or early 30s. I do have alot of memorys like this myself tho, I do remember the first time I beat alot of great games, and I don't look back on them with disappointment how I wasted my life. I look back on them fondly, and wish I could relive them again.

Ockman, did you even read my post?

I'm not saying it's not acceptable to play videogames.

I'm talking about a person who does nothing BUT play ffxi. there has to be some kind of balance. In my opinion for someone to get all jobs to 75 would require almost non stop play for years.

You rambled on and on about the videogame industry, which had zero relevance to the topic. Yes, games are popular... no one is debating that. You could even make the argument that playing games are not a waste of time. They are providing entertainment the same way a movie or book would. That is simply not the issue at hand. The issue is how much is too much. I would feel the very same way about someone who reads books 15 hours a day, has no job, no motivation, no interaction with other humans...

Here's 2 more screenshots for PROOF that Mumu has it.
I don't believe it. He could easily make it look like he is wearing the Maat Cap by .dat swapping. Also, if it was real in that pic in Jeuno (unless he has filters on) you would see "xxxx examines you." spammed in his chat log b/c I know that if I saw someone on my server with that cap I would sure as hell check them. Also, since it is still and a new item that few (if any) people know how to obtain, if he was showing it off in Jeuno I imagine he would have more people grouped around him and/or following him to /check him and or to take pics or what not. In his pics it looks like everyone is just going about there business and not even paying any attention to the fact that he has the cap on, which would support the .dat swap theory since only you would see your character with the cap on and everyone else would see your real head armor. I agree that the screenshot of all jobs at Lv75 looks editted as well. The "5s" of the 75s in the right hand column are had a few pixels shaved off and do not have the same curvature as the "5s" in the left hand column. Anyway, I don't buy these pics and until there are more undeniable confirmations I don't think this player has the Maat Cap.

LOL This makes me smile. If you think its bad now, you should have seen what it was like 30 years ago. You know how you hear the "omg that book isn't fit to be in our children's school library!!" or "that music talks about gangsters and killing and our children don't need to hear that stuff!"? Well apply that to video games. There was a great outcry about children rotting their brains and bodies by playing video games. If you gamed it wasn't talked about openly, it was almost like a secret society! LOL And being a female gamer...UNHEARD OF!! LOLOLOLOLOL I was supposed to be buying clothes and makeup and hunting down a man and having children!! LOLOLOLOLOL Now you can openly talk about being a gamer. There are stores dedicated to only games! You walk in without looking over your shoulder or stuffing the game in your pocket don't you? Being a gamer (geek) now is MUCH more acceptable than it was back in the day. I even own gaming t-shirts that I'm not afraid to wear now! I remember going to friends houses with my Atari shirt on and wearing a sweater or jacket over it until I got there, even if it was 90 degrees out!! LOLOLOLOL

Having a balanced life and playing games as a part of that life is fine. Not one thing wrong with that. But there are many people that don't have balanced lives. They sacrifice some aspects of their life to continue their behavior. It doesn't matter how you look at it, if you do that then something is wrong. Turning your fond memories into a job is a dream, thus a dream job! But in order to do that you must lead a balanced life, no? School, obligations regarding school (homework, projects), job to pay for school, etc. and you get to live your dream. (I'm totally jealous! ^^) But understand that some people aren't turning their "over"time spent in gaming into a dream job or anything productive for that matter. Gaming for entertainment is one thing, gaming for obsession is absolutely another.

Someone mentioned an elderly man that is ill and plays. It sounded like he did this to the exclusion of anything else. He also lives in a retirement home. I'd like to say that its not healthy. Retirement homes have activities which he is probably excluding himself from. He's also excluding himself from socialization. It doesn't sound like he is leading a balanced life and that is not healthy. And I can put myself in his shoes because I live a similar dilemma. I suffer from a serious genetic illness (I won't go into details). I can't be left alone at any time. It is much easier for me to sit in front of my computer day in and day out than it is to participate in life...especially the quality of life I lead. You know what that is? That's called depression.

I don't give in to depression. I live my life. I cook, clean, play with my grandson, spend time with my family, have outings with colleagues and friends, and I even do pro bono charity work. And somewhere in there I squeeze in gaming time, and a fairly good amount of it too! (I put my DS and PSP in my briefcase and play any chance I get!! LOL ) I balance my life. Why? Because its the right and healthy thing to do and I don't want to regret it in the end. Too much of one thing is...well....just too damn much!

seriously ockman you shouldnt write or respond unless you have actually took the time to read the posts. yes there is a picture of him wearing a hat, an if you had read all the post yousd have known that...

gman i know what you mean just the other day i looked at my time 186days since pc launch. this made me depressed as well. 4464 total hours in 19 months comes out to be 7.5 hours a day. it wasnt til later when my g/f pointed out to me, things like me bazaring, or taking long afks. an then i realized how totally inaccurate this counter really is. when i was 16 i figure id spend about 6-13 hrs a day bazaaring off dropped items, an mining goods. or how many times id come on to talk to the linkshell an wonder off for a few hours. so then it didnt really even matter what my chars total time logged on was, cause i knew alot of it was while i was absentee.

really it depends on what you aim your profession on in real life. sure you may not see yourself wasting time on a video game cause thats the line of work you have choosen. then again theres probably some doctor who feels like he wasted some of his time on video games instead of doing other things. i personally dont tfeel i wasted my time on a video game. yet again i do design work for companies, an have had a animated short run on nickalodeon. an i will admit some of my ideas are based off of video games. but like i said thats only for a select few, what of the others?

jabeo you can turn off the check feature now. so he prob is being checked but his chat filter isnt showing it.

It may have sounded worse than it actually is lol. I have a girlfriend of 6 years, a dog, a house, a job (which i hate but thats another issue kinda) and I do have a social life. The problem is, I've stopped doing things that I used to do in order to play FFXI. We all know how much time is needed to get anything done in this game. That time has to cut into time spent doing other things pre-FFXI. I DO play to much (by my standards) and there are small periods of time where I just dont feel like playing and do something else, but overall, this game has not been good for me. Too bad I still have goals I want to accomplish in the game (why, I have no idea) which is keeping me playing.

Lol, well since everyone here seems to be experts on who has a "life". Guess you guys can say if I do or not >.>

I work 8hrs every weekday, spend 2 hrs weekdays and 4hrs weekends training and exersicing in Tae Kwon Do, Hopkido, Jujitsu, Kyudo, and Judo. After this I spend about 2hrs learning anything of my choice (Study a Language, Computer Networking, API Functions, Cartography, etc...). In the end on weekdays I'm left with 2-4 hrs to play FFXI depending on how tired I am, and on weekends I have about 10 hrs to play FFXI.

So in a year I've spent between 66 days and 6 hrs minimum (Woah 666 I didn't realize that till i did the math now >.>) and 88 days 7hrs and 12 min at maximum. Lol, as you can probably guess in what I just posted I have no girlfriend. As intresting as it sounds to have one I don't know about it being right for me, so far it's been the only females that ever seemed intrested in me were already living with a person who was suppose to be their boyfriend so that was just odd.

Anyways you supposed "Experts" you seem to be here, do I have a "life" then >.>

I think I do, I'm doing what I enjoy. The dojang I go to even requested me to be a part of their demo team called "Team Pilsan" (Pilsan meaning "Certain Victory or Assured Victory"). For the 5 years I've been working at my current job I've been promoted 3 times almost 4 but our current databases and how they are designed needed more attention then intially thought so the 4th promotion was put on hold for a nice salary increase instead.

Yes, indeed he seemed to of recently replied to the posts claiming it to be photoshopped. Yet like someone here already said, that's definatly got to be a known maximum requirement that'll guarentee you getting the cap. Now the question is if that's really the minimum requirement, since he's obviously had many jobs at high levels already before doing that and before it was possible to get so he may of been well beyond the requirements actually needed to just get it.

Short version, it says: Defeat Maat on all jobs, talk to him for an event, and the hat will be yours. It also says the text of the quest in your quest log is "Once you have overcome all of Maat's challenges, you will be rewarded with his secret."

I would be quite surprised if the requirements were anything less than defeating him on all jobs.
