The word "illegal" sure seems to get tossed around a lot in the context of gil selling. Sure, selling gil is a breach of contract as it violates the TOS agreement. I also know that there is such thing as "intellectual property". Furthermore, I understand that IGE is profiting off of another company's work.

However, I am not sure that trading gil qualifies as illegal, especially in the context of international law.

I'm pretty sure that telling someone you are going to mail a bomb to their place of employment, on the other hand, will get you in some trouble.

There is no question that IGE and its companions are bad for FFXI. However, harassing customer service or even complaining to IGE management (which would at least focus the attention to the people at IGE who are capable of making decisions) isn't going to accomplish anything.

You aren't going to stop gil selling by harassing the gil farmers or the companies that support them. It's up to SE to enforce its TOS. If they are unable or unwilling to do that, it's up to the players to complain to SE if the practice upsets them. The thing is, FFXI isn't exactly a democracy, is it? They can choose to ignore the complaints (and so far they pretty much have). In that case, you can continue to complain, quit FFXI, or learn to live with it.

I guess I'm missing the point though, aren't I? The point of the live chat sessions with IGE CS stopped being about changing things in the game a long time ago and became about seeing who could me the most outrageous and offensive so they could brag about it here and on other boards.

Since it has been stated that doing this won't help make a difference in the "cause," I say you can still use it to vent your own frustrations about what is going on. I personally wouldn't do this because it's a worthless waste of time, but please continue harassing them; maybe they'll have to hire a few more customer service representatives or something (although I doubt it).

I don't quite understand why the NM campers who sell the gil they get from selling the items they camp are such a big deal. You do realize that most of the items that are being camped by "gil sellers" would be camped anyway, right? Also, the net effect on the economy is effectively nil, because camping an item and selling it doesn't create gil, it just moves it around.

A simple economics lesson:

Given a static demand, an increase in supply (of items from NMs) means the prices go down. This is good for everyone but the NM-campers.

Thinking that you would have an oh-so-much-better chance at getting a particular NM if it wasn't being farmed by a "gil seller" is incredibly naive. Every NM with a highly desired drop is camped to hell and back such that removing the "gil sellers" would likely have little effect, as it would STILL be heavily camped.

Unless an item is being sold to a vendor, no new money is being generated into the economy, it's simply changing hands. I would seriously doubt that IGE has more than $100 million gil (at their prices, this would cost $12,500.00 to buy) in stock, on average, per server. This is a drop in the bucket to the total server economy. The top 5 richest people on each server probably total in excess of $100 million gil. Still, this does have SOME effect on the economy, as part of the money of a particular server's economy is out of circulation, in IGE, at any given moment. What happens when there's less money in the economy? Oh, right, prices go down.

So, more campers = more items entering the economy (assuming the item in question wasn't already at maximum campage to begin with), = lower prices. Less gil in circulation (because some of it is in IGE) = lower prices. I'm not understanding where exactly the problem comes into play.

SE already took care of a ******FAR****** more pervasive problem than IGE a patch or two ago. That being, rusty cap-fishing being insanely profitable for the amount of effort it took. If you think about it for even a moment, you will understand that 1800 gil (on average) entering the economy per person fishing caps per ~4-6 minutes (on average) resulted in a huuuuuuuuuuuge influx of cash into the economy. This is the reason why prices are high - supply of cash goes up, prices go up.

There is also the problem of nebimonite fishing, which hasn't been addressed yet (and, to be honest, is a far smaller problem overall than cap-fishing ever was). With a reasonably high alchemy skill, you can fish up nebs, HQ synth them into black ink, and sell the ink to a vendor for a profit in excess of that which cap fishing provided. Fishing in general is still far too profitable considering how easily bottable it is. It it feels like minting money, it's probably bad for the economy.

Stop whining about IGE. Their net effect on the economy, while existent, is very small. The bigger problem has, and always will be, loopholes that allow people to extract a far greater amount of gil from the environment in a given amount of time than the game's money sinks are designed to handle. That is SE's problem, not IGE's.
