Mining is a horrible source of gil - do it if you're working up tradeskills - don't waste your time if you're trying to make cash. There are much easier ways to get gil, even killing certain monsters and selling their drops to vendors will net more cash in a period of time.

I can usually net a Platinum Ore in Palborough once every hour, and maybe 3 in one trip, synthing zincs/irons/silvers and dropping Tins/Pebbles. That's well over 60k -- a feat difficult to replicate with monster hunting in the same amount of time.

Do pickaxes break due to a specific skill like Blacksmith skill?

Or do pickaxes break just due to random luck?

random, minings not really worth it anymore, break to much pickaxe, and ifrit is dangerous, you get good ore, but you also could get killed.

i've heard that i can mine in Tohrongi Canyon .. how true is that ?

You dont mine in Tahrongi, you excavate. Some people get it confused because you use pickaxes for that as well but the results are quite different. People in bonecrafting go to Tahrongi to dig up bones for their crafting. Most of what you dig up isnt worth very much.

Zeruhn Mines is the other place. It's for newb miners.

Zeruhn Mines is the easiest place to mine.

Palborough and Ygotto is a good place for lvl 30's since the enemies won't bother you.

Gusgen has a better payout then Pal and the grotto but is harder.

Ifrit's Cauldron is the hardest with the best payout.

i have had a lot of luck mining. i bought the mining body armor, hands, and shoes.

my first attempt on mining was at palborough mines and i only had 3 pickaxes.

it took me 5 min to get myself a platinum ore before all 3 of my pick axes broke :D

next day, i bought 2 stacks of pick axes and went back into the palaborough mines. after i broke 13 pickaxes, i got myself another platnium ore ( after 20 min of mining). after i broke all my pickaxes, i got around 4 silver ores, 4 irons, 12 zinc, 1 platinum, and a bunch of copper ores.

im so glad i have a inventory of 50 :D

I've found that mining is one of the most profitable ways to make cash AND raise some skill points.

So far I stayed my course in Zherun Mines and after about 4 days of solid work, I made about 70,000 gil worth of stuff. At level 30, this money was used to purchase my Warrior's Belt +1, Banish II, 2 Sphene Rings, Flash, Map of Eldieme Necropolis, Map of Garlaige Citadel, and a Hunting Sword. Basically all the stuff that I needed from level 30-40. When I reach 40, I'm shifting to Palborough Mines to start mining there and, hopefully, make some great returns to purchase my levle 40 stuff which all runs up to about 120k.

When i first attempted mining, i went to pal mines, and got really frusterated because of the lack of mining points, and getting nothing when i actually find them.

I heard Gusgen was good, when i got there, it was easy to find the 4 mining points, all relatively close to each other. When there are lots of other people mining, it ussually isn't worth the time, but when there arent alot of people, you can go back and forth easily.

In gusgen, I ussually get alot of iron ore's(600 gil), darksteel ore(6.5k), colored stones, and the occasional Gold ore(12k)

Also, what lv would you need to be to go to Ifrits cauldren, and not get agro?

You can't, Ifrit's aggros to level 75s.

First trip there i got 3 darksteel and one adaman. im my server, adaman sells for 100k, so that more than pays for everything.

Goddamn I wish gold was worth that much in Cait Sith. I got 2 pieces in a run at the Grotto and sold them for 7k each

I still like the grotto for the fact that all the mining spots are so close together. Sure i don't get platinum but man with the sheer amount of mining I can do there I don't really need it.

Also how deep into the cauldron are the mining points. I ran out of sneak and prism powders before I found any mining points :sweat: :sweat: :sweat:

From my experience, mining in Yughott Grotto is the best. Main reason is because the place is not too crowded and its close to a city so you don't waste too much time running back and forth to sell your stuff when your inventory is full. Zeruhn would be a good place but the problem is that theres too many people who go there. I always check and theres often five or more miners so it can take quite sometime to fill up your inventory. When you go in the Grotto, theres not as much competition so your reward over time is higher. Gusgen is the worst place for mining. The reward is the same as Yughott Grotto but the place is far and you need to be able to Warp otherwise its a pain in the ass to get out of there. Palborough is good too but the only good Ore there is Platinum. The place is also far from Bastok so unless you have Warp, its going to take you some time to travel for each trip but the Platinum is nice and definatly worth it. I haven't been to Ifrit's Cauldron yet but I heard that you could get some Adamantite from there which is by far, the best mining reward in this game. problem is that the place is VERY far and the place is dangerous as hell because of the monsters, even high level can get attacked so you need to have some Prism Powder and Silent Oil. I haven't been there yet but I really want to try it someday and see how it is.
