Hell, if nothing else, just bringing FPS into the Nintendo sphere would do a lot to fuck with Sony/MS.
I do think it should stay in western hands from a first person standpoint, but Metroid is in no way a first person shooter and Metroid's design has more than proven that it is not well-equipped to be a competitive FPS like Halo, Killzone or CoD are (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes multiplayer, Metroid Prime Hunters)..

Its the same problem as putting competitive multiplayer into Bioshock, Deus Ex or Portal - its just not what those games are for and if you try to push them to be otherwise the results are not well-received. The only multiplayer element they can really grow into capably is co-op and in the case of DX not even then.

When they made MPH, Metroid turned into Quake Arena. And that wasn't done by Retro, but internally by NOA. Bosses were bland as fuck and the adventure element almost entirely gutted. MPH is honestly more reviled than Other M presently is.

Also, I wouldn't downplay its influence, seeing as Castlevania, Monster Tale, Shadow Complex, Batman: Arkham Asylum and more crib notes from Metoid.

At the very least, Nintendo should reissue Metroid Prime Trilogy for $30 to celebrate. That game is rare and bloody expensive in the used market now. Gamestop sells it for $69.99 used. I've never seen any PS3 or 360 game become that rare and priced so high.

Heads up to those who have OOT3D or are thinking about getting it.

If you have OOT3D, you need to register it between tonight and midnight tomorrow PDT and do the survey if you want a free CD soundtrack with some bonus live orchestral mix as well.

So even if you don't have a 3DS and want the game and the bonus, grab it up now.

As for the game, this is right up there with Tactics Ogre and REmake in terms of remakes. Lovingly crafted and the changes they have made only serve to enhance the experience for both old and new players.

You now get four slots to assign items to instead of three, two of them are for active button presses, two on the touch screen (which is nice for lesser-used things). The ocarina gets its own exclusive slot on the touch screen so you never have to equip it. You can aim bow/slingshot with gyro or analog.

Here's hoping they get to work on Majora's Mask 3D.

EDIT: Also, you might wish to disable your pop-up blocker for the survey so you can get confirmation of your CD. I'm going to have to call Nintendo in the morning to confirm because I didn't know that and left it on.

I had to call Ninty yesterday too because the CD order option never came up. Thankfully, their customer service is amazing. No questions asked, they immediately hooked my account up and as soon as the rep said "you'll receive a confirmation e-mail soon" I got a 'ding' on my phone with the confirmation e-mail. Very impressed.

Yeah, I've always been amazed with Nintendo's customer service. I think I've only heard "I can't" out of them once.

And when I got that one "can't" there were a dozen other "cans" in there to help me. With Sony its often been "Here's what you did wrong and why I can't help you fix it."

I called Nintendo this morning and they got me sorted out as well. Even when I had some slight trouble with the eShop the other week, they were able to explain why the error happened and all without making it sound like it was my fault somehow (though it this case it probably was).

A recent interview confirmed no Ganondorf for Skyward sword.

I kinda figured that, though, given this was a prequel to OOT and Ganondorf wouldn't be born yet, I guess that makes sense. Plus this is the time where the Master Sword gets created and you couldn't kill him without that anyway.,

Part of the story actually has Link and Zelda going to school together. Seems she's not a Princess and since she and Link live in Skyloft. That's a first, all these games with Link and we haven't seen him go to school once. Zelda doesn't seem to be a princess yet, either, not that it will stop her from being kidnapped. I guess she is due for a straight-up kidnapping with all her alternative roles (disguised as a Sheikha, a pirate, disembodied ghost).

I don't see how this is makes sense, since you could just as well say Link "wouldn't be born yet either"...not that THAT makes sense, since they just keep being born again. The fact that the Master Sword doesn't get created doesn't preclude Ganondorf ether - they could actually make him a man/sorcerer and not some sort of humanoid mass of evil. This is especially true if Zelda is in the game despite not being royalty (there goes the backstory for Zelda 2!) Or the Master Sword could get created at the end of the game just so you can fight him.

Not that I care, I'd rather Link not have the Master Sword and Ganondorf not be the bad guy. I know that's kind of what Zelda's supposed to be about but it's predictable as hell and it's getting a bit tiresome. Mario gets away with it because his games aren't about plot - and when they are (the RPGs,) Bowser's never the real villain. I know the handheld games tend to avoid Ganondorf altogether but I'd like to see them break out of the mold with their main games every now and then.

Re: Hey! Listen! Zelda turns 25!

I think the "Gerudo race bears male offspring once every 100 years and makes him their king" stipulation weighs heavily on the whole Ganondorf thing more than even the lack of a Master Sword does.

People complain if you stick to formula.

My favorite Zeldas have been the ones that tossed formula out the window - Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, Wind Waker.

I would say Spirit Tracks, too, but the whole railroad overworld didn't really have as much to it as Wind Waker's ocean did. Majora's Mask was the last time we had a deeply realized overworld - OOT was halfway and Twilight Princess didn't really have that. Overworld in TP was just something to ride Epona across.

I recall Miyamoto and Aonuma commented that the overworld - or at least the world below Skyloft - would be a bit more packed with things to do and discover.
