Re: Pai Pai's OFFICIAL Tokyo Games Show 2007 Thread

Apparently it doesn't work for mods.

I heard about Rez, Ikaruga would be neat, but then I've got all the bullet hell I could ever want courtesy Kenta Cho.

I've seen a lot of good things about the 360, but between loathing MS's business practices to the point where I at least try to avoid anything they slap their name on, and the fact that I'm trying not to play so many damn video games (I'm actually thinking about selling my PS2, GC, XB, and GC and all the games I have for them) outside of fitness games, not to mention RRoD, I don't see myself getting one anytime soon. Maybe if someone gives me one, and there's a lot of games I want in the bargain bin I might consider it, but I'm rather content with having a single console on my shelves. much easier to deal with.

          uh.

It's a music driven on-rails shooter. Whenever you target or shoot at your enemy, it causes musical elements to sound. Some times sounds better than others.

Re: Pai Pai's OFFICIAL Tokyo Games Show 2007 Thread

Yeah it is kinda obvious Zero was meant to be the big hero all along (they hinted at it enough in X1) and the only one I didn't play through was Zero 4 (working on that now. A friend of mine told me the ending already though)

X5 was rushed. Over all, the series had a lot of good story potential that capcom sadly just didn't focus on. It would have been a great way to re-invent the series (at least they got it right in the Zero series) but who knows, maybe they'll do some decent remakes and fully explain everything.

My main point is, capcom seems to enjoy trashing it's best series lately... as does SE (WTF is going on with the World of Mana project? SD2 and 3 were masterpieces, but the recent games are all shit)

I guess I'm just bitter at how they ran with the X series. The Zero series was kinda cool, but I still think it would have been much better had they simply not screwed things up and properly ending everything with X5.

X5 came out four years after 4 did and yet it was rushed. X4 was amazing too - . -' though I prefered Zero being able to multi-hit bosses in X5 and on.

Long story short: Shame on you capcom.

As for the FF's aforementioned, I liked all of them.

Junctioning was pretty neat. I liked how different spell boosted different stats. Magic was mostly useless in 8 anyway (the game was waaaaaay too easy to begin with) but it did drive me nuts drawing spells over and over and over...

Materia was also a thing of beauty. While I generally prefer characters to be more unique in battle, it was still a very well done customization system.

Espers were cool too, but only being able to use them once a fight, and only 1 per character was rather lame.

The Sphere Grid was cool at first, but in the end it was just another way for everyone to get the same abilities.

The license board was garbage. VG cats put it best IMO

                http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=215

Supposedly in the new FF 12 international version (which again, we'll probably never see much like X and it's revamped sphere grid) there are simply set jobs rather than the stupid board that you pick from the beginning. 2 handed ninja swords? Jump only usable by the enemy? WTF SE

                (Spoiler Warning for FF9)

I think 4 6 and 9 so far have done the best jobs of making truly unique characters. 9 got it right with setting everyone with classes and then giving them abilities to customize them with that didn't necessarily step on each other's toes (dividing white magic and summoning up between Eiko and Sara was stupid tho)

                (End Spoiler)

While XI's job system is quite enjoyable, I find the skill system is a double edged sword. It keeps things in balance, but at the same time it horribly limits the customization aspect. For example, if not for skill ratings and resists, I could sub BLM on my SAM and MB off my own skill chains for fun. Or actually do damage with nukes on WHM/BLM.

But alas, it just doesn't work that way. That's one thing that SE got right in FF5 and Tactics (Tactics especially) it was fun being able to mix and match abilities.

I have a friend that said that FFXII International has english on it too, so I don't think you'll have any problems playing it, just get it off ebay or playasia or something.

Unless you need a modchipped PS2 for region lockout, I dunno.

I haven't heard anything about Radiant Silvergun being ported, but if Treasure did it, it would seriously make my day. Radiant Silvergun was much more epic a game than Ikaruga was, and I still consider it the best looking 32-bit game of that era. I sold off my copy for $165 about two years ago and would definitely enjoy a port to Xbox Live Arcade.

Xbox 360 = Dreamcast 2.0 in my eyes. Oh yeah, and Mind Killer > Rock is Sponge.

But the Dreamcast wasn't such a "bad" system.

There are a ton of parallels between the DC/XB360 vs PS2/PS3, but XB360 isn't going anywhere, unfortunately.

Unfortunately? It's an excellent gaming system, and for the record, the Dreamcast had its own issues with GD-ROM drives giving out on people, mostly due to the drive lens working overtime from games that utilized CRI's ADX codec to stream music... the lens had to grind back and forth like mad between the CD-ROM and GD-ROM sections on games like Phantasy Star Online, Jet Grind Radio, and numerous other games. Good thing Dreamcasts were cheap.

I'm a gigantic Sega fan, but the Dreamcast was definitely uh... the least sturdy of their consoles. Fantastic games though...

Outside of Japan, at least. Xbox 360 feels more like "the new Dreamcast" because it's getting a new wave of shmups and ecchi-games, which is typical for Japan's worst-selling platform each generation (Xbox was the same way).

Microsoft's doing great business outside of Japan though, so I see no reason why they should go the way of the Dreamcast, which was, following the release of the PS2, a worldwide tank. That's not to say I don't miss and respect the DC. Great platform with too many problems to keep it afloat...though it somehow continues to get some developer support.

Excepting for the fact that in it's existence I believe the XBox unit has been profitable a grand total of one month over the course of 2 consoles.

If Microsoft wants to continue to blow their massive amounts of cash while we continue to enjoy their platforms, props to them. They just need to learn to make quality hardware while they're at it, and they're golden.

Fact is, Microsoft got into the games industry for one reason, to capitalize on its impending growth. They won't go anywhere until it's absolutely clear that they'll never make any money off of it. And since they've continued to improve greatly in the industry since they began, I think they should stick around as long as they need to.
