Re: Life in Eorzea! (video!) Official Youtube Channel!!!! town! squee!!!!
...that's just stupid. Free trials bring more people to the game. When people find out how the game plays they have a better idea of whether they want to keep playing it or not. FFXIV especially will need a free trial early in it's lifetime (i wouldn't say at release because MMOs always seem worse when they start off, but at most 6 months in) because a lot of people were turned off by XI's gameplay and having a game that looks so close to XI, they would have to experience the gameplay first hand to see if it's really different or not.
....err, we can't say anything about whether FFXIV is losing customers or not right now because we know so little about the game and those who aren't XI fans seem to know even less. While I agree they need to really differentiate the two games, graphics aren't going to be what turns people away.
People seemed to be worried the similarities between the two games will mean the two games end up being way too similar. While I do love XI, that doesn't mean it's without flaws, so for me to want to play XIV, that game will have to vastly improve on all those flaws from XI. However, I am in agreement that having such similar races makes XIV's originality look somehwhat lack luster. While it does have that old, familiar, comforting look to it that reminds me so much of XI...it also reminds me of all of XI's flaws as well. While the whole tribe division thing was a step in the right direction, adding Male Mithra, Female Galka and hell, even a brand new race or two would make a world of difference.
SE has already proven it can create unique, original races (XI and XII's races differ not only from each other, but from most other traditional sword and sorcery MMOs as well), so for XIV's to retain so much similarities from XI is both comforting and worrying. Comforting in the fact much of it will be familiar and easy to understand...but worrying in that so much of it will feel unoriginal and completely rehashed.
But good god them girls be smexy. I'll certainly give this game a chance. But only because I can play it on my PS3. If this was PC only, there's no way in hell I would ever give it a shot.

...err actually no it doesn't. In fact it shows that they took many of the Galkan civilization's traits split in two between the two Tribes. Galka were always expert seafarers and had a very close link to the planet itself. The Galkan Navy was one of the strongest when their civilization was at it's peak and they're literally born from the land itself via reincarnation. With the Roedygan's, the Sea Wolves inherit the naval prowess of the Galka and the Hellsguard reflect their spiritual nature.
Also, none of the info on the updated site is new, nor does it mention tribe specific deities for each tribe. From my understanding, personal dieties are actually character specific, something chosen by the player when you create your character.
