Amongst the DD weapons, Excalibur and Amanomurakumo definitely shine. Excalibur's exclusive WS, Knights of the Round, has a very strong hidden +enmity effect which makes it extremely attractive for Paladins.

I haven't seen anyone on my server with Amanomurakumo, so can't say from personal experience, but yes you could certainly pump out a lot of Light skillchains in a row with it. This isn't quite as useful as you might think, since skillchains are mostly good for magic bursting, and having your BLMs magic burst that much is just asking for hate to bust out of control (though if you had a Paladin with Aegis and Excalibur...). Nonetheless it's still very powerful.

None of the serious DRKs I know are fond of Apocalypse. Not that it isn't an extremely good weapon, but because the strongest DRK weapon at end-game ends up being a Kraken Club...

EDIT: An honorable mention should be given to Yoichinoyumi (relic bow) now that RNG have been slightly un-sucked by the October update.

I know 5+ level 75 paladins, and at least 3+ lvl 75 bards, all of whom are in HNM LS (I am not) From what I hear, they do the jobs just fine without them having any relic weapon, so if I was going to pick a relic weapon to upgrade, I would probably not pick either the Gjallarhorn or the Aegis since the jobs that can use them are already doing fine and from what I hear kicking some wyrm heiny.
Sure, they could do better with the relic armors, I'm not disputing that, but I don't think it's fair to say that obviously we haven't seen these in action just because some posters aren't all saying that they would pick either the Gjallarhorn or the Aegis.
The thread title is What is the best relic weapon?, but the OP is more along the lines of, What is the best relic weapon for you?
And that is why I am saying for me, the best relics would be lance, Gsword, or Gaxe.
Best overall relic would probably have to be the Gjallarhorn IMO though.
All jobs can do just fine w/o their relic weapon. I believe its been agreed upon here that no relic weapon is actually worth the bonus it gives when compared to the effort that has to be put into it. It costs what, roughly 1 billion gil to fully upgrade any given relic? There are hundreds of items you could buy with that much money that would vastly improve your job over what that one particular relic could do. Aegis and Gjallarhorn are simply not quite such a giant gil sink in what they return to both the user and the party as a whole.

This is honestly not the direction I expected the conversation to go at all ^^ but the answers are still interesting. I really had no idea prior to posting this what was so great about Gjallarhorn other than freeing some inventory and avoiding annoying blinking.

I didn't expect the discussion to be quite so one-sided though. I thought there would be more discussion about what the DD-type weapons brought to the table for their respective jobs. I'd heard that Destroyers actually outparse Spharai so that broke my delusion that each weapon would be a quantum leap in power over the next best weapon.

The winners as far as DD weapons go seem to be Excalibur, Apocalypse, and Amanomurakumo. Excalibur makes a lot of sense to me. Considering only its base stats, it already has the highest base damage and dps of any single-hit sword, add +20 attack, occasional doucle damage and an additional 300 or more damage on each attack and the weapon is leaps and bound ahead of other swords.

Apocalypse I suppose must be a considerable boost to drk's notoriously slow TP-gain, with the +20 accuracy and Haste WS effect.

Amanomurakumo seems worthy of mention mainly for the job that can use it. It seems to be if you managed to get Tachi: Kaiten for two sams in an ls they could pull off a nearly limitless string of light skillchains. That could be a pretty significant group benefit in the right situation, right?

The only way I could see other weapons reaching Gjallarhorn's power would be if their additional effect was AoE and granted for the whole party.

With End Game stuff you really waste a lot of the Horn's buffing power because most parties are specialized, so you end up only using 2 songs on your entire party at the same time most of the times.

But in a situation where you have a regular party and you have mages and melee that's when this little piece of relic really shines, and there's no way another relic weapon can match that no matter how good damage or additional effects they have.

Re: What's the best relic weapon?

All the Paladins in my HNMLS desperately want an Aegis, and we actively sponsor them. Not just because they want them, but because we know they will do their jobs much, much better when it is finished (and make our ability to complete difficult missions and battles that much better as a result).

I disagree with your read of Taskmage's original post. The OP explicitly removes personal preference from the decision - his hypothetical situation grants a level 75 job and a completed relic of your choice, and implicitly asks which completed relic is the best if you have no other factors influencing your decision other than their stats.

It doesn't ask "Which is the best one for you" - it's asking "based on the stats, which completed relic is the most powerful when wielded by the appropriate level 75 character". The answer to this question is currently, without room for argument, Gjallarhorn - hence the commentary from myself and other end-game players who say that anyone who feels otherwise has never seen one used, because the effect of Gjallarhorn on party effectiveness is extreme.

    EDIT:

I should probably say that they are in the same HNM LS except for a few of them.

I personally, don't really care for bard, never tried paladin, and mage jobs are kinda fun, but are also just kinda so-so for me. What I really like is the DD jobs, in particular the jobs that primarily use two handed weapons, drg, drk, sam, and war.

Now if I had all jobs to level 75, and could upgrade a relic weapon, I would not pick the relic shield or horn, why? I don't really care playing those jobs and I know plenty of people who just love playing pld and bard, so I'd either let them upgrade their own relic, or help them to do it, but I'd get a relic weapon for a job that I enjoyed.

Of the two handed weapons, I like the Gugnir, Ragnarok, and Bravura the best, and in roughly that order.

As for relic WS not dealing alot of damage, I would have to ask is he geared up for that WS? I know that Geirskogul has a 60% agility damage modifier on it, so +str gear wouldn't be as good for it. Additionally, it is a two hit WS that ignores defense, making it a very attractive WS to me.

This, comments about Gjallarhorn and Aegis being substantially more useful than their damage weapon equivalents are entirely on-topic.

Most of end game, when there's only 1 BRD, they are usually lumped in group with NINs
I don't think you'd put a relic horn with NIN. While there are increases to all bard songs, the true benefit is in the +2 ballads.

In essence, you can get faster MP, but if you don't have every other job pulling their share, you're not going to win fights any faster just because you have 2x ballads on steroids.
Also, remember, it only works if the BRD is lumped with other mages. Most of end game, when there's only 1 BRD, they are usually lumped in group with NINs

Relic horn + PLD/WARs can hold HNMs like Tiamat indefinitely and can more or less self-cure until under 20% when Mighty Strikes starts hitting for 800+. Not losing hate because you have pretty much unlimited MP means you never have to sleep the mob, miss SC because the mob moves, no one has to hold back damage, etc.

Ok in my ls we got a pimp war Bravura and it is awesome for sc and other things but it sucks on mobs that are not hard, I can do more damage to ep mobs with staff then Med Torment... against HNM mobs it is good but other then that it is crap lol
also they made it look the same as Martial Bhuj....

Took him about a year and a half. I don't know how much gil... but it was "a lot". His primary job for a long time was BST, though, so he was able to fund a lot of it from the overflow of Kindred and Beastmen Seals he had (literally always had like 400-600 seals... of both types).

For me any item that takes more than 10 days of play (240 hours) just isn't worth it, and I might be exagerating, I should say 120 hours.

I mean, I understand these kind of items have a good value inside the game, but the cost in time (RL time) is way too much for me, specially considering I play an average of around 20 hours week .
Well, yeah, I think those are largely fair statements. But for the Bravura at least, it isn't quite a worthless toy (unlike some of the other weapons). I'm still of the opinion that it's not really worth the time, but for someone who really wants it, it does give tangible benefits.
