My update to this secret craft...

This is my guide from another site (TotalFFXI.com) I was known as Zoko. Thought i would share it since youve beaten me to the punch on this site and the fact that im switching forums to this one FFXIonline.com forever!

    Foreword

    Info is from http://ffxi.somepage.com

    Introduction

Lets start off by a little intro to "The Secret Craft"

    Were talking about Chocobo Digging...

Yes you can make money off this...

Yes you can gain levels off doing this...

Yes you can get quicker at digging...

Yes you can get a better chance at digging up very rare items...

    What you need...

    1. Chocobo License
    2. Attain level 20 for longer riding time...
    3. Many Many Many Gysahl Greens about 6 stacks for a good amount of digging.

    Rumors

    Quote from http://ffxi.somepage.com/chocobo/

    Quote:
    Chocobo Digging Rumors

There are rumors that there is a "testing system", and that in order to advance to the next level, you need to dig up a certain item. There are others who believe that all you need to do to level up is dig, dig, dig. Since we cannot prove the veracity of the alleged testing system, we have chosen not to post it here. There ARE higher digging levels, it's just unclear exactly how you move up.

No one is sure exactly how the elements in a zone affect digging. My personal preference is to dig on the days these elements are strong to. So in the Yuhtunga Jungle where there are water elementals, I dig on Firesday. In the Konschtant Highlands where there are lightning elementals, I dig on Watersday. (You can find a table of elemental strengths and weaknesses on the gardening page.) And yes, this does complicate things when you have a zone that has more than one element. Some people I know like to dig on the same day as the elementals. If there is an element out, you can dig up crystals of that element (clusters if it is a double element). Some people also think that elemental weather increases your chances of a successful dig. (Elemental weather patterns.)

This is where you will find what areas dig up what items...

    Outro

Sorry i couldnt be of more help...

If you like it give it a good rating please!

    Re: Chobi Digging Skill

i found times even in the deserts where they're deserted and i got all day to dig. on our server right now bone chips are approximately 10k to 15k a stack depending on where you sell them. they virtually pay for your digging. giant femurs go from 2k to 6k a pop depending on area, with windurst having the best sales.

my homes been konschtat highlands (quite a few elm logs, i turn them into bast parchment to maximize my profit), altepa, and meriphatuand, and rolanberry. i really have not put much digging into the jungles yet because the zones are usually dug up and the items you can dig there aren't all the hype anyway.

    Update to this thread

Ok, new to these forums(signed up to post on this thread). For those who doubt that choco digging exists, go ahead and hit back now, i'm not going to try to convince you. I'm currently lvl 5 (dig time 0, area wait 40). I have invested about 1.2-1.3 Mill into this as of this post, and can verify that there are levels, because i have no delay in digging, wheras my wife has the evil and tedious 16 second delay, and zoning in at at the same time, i can dig a full 10-15 seconds before she can. Also the quality of my digs is signifigantly better, in Altepa - East, she gets primarily bone chips, pebbles and giant femurs, I get more Darksteel, Wyvern scales etc, in West i average 2-4 Darksteel ores and 3-6 Gold Ores per trip, if you check some of the documented rarity of items, I'm digging the "Rare" items consistently. Next topic: Leveling. There are no test items, dont exist, dont bother... that was just what some guy dug up when he leveled and told his buddies, i've gotten 2/5 levels with the last dig being pebbles.... its just sheer numbers of digs, iirc its
    1-2 = ~100 stacks of greens
    2-3 = ~200 stacks of greens
    3-4 = ~400 stacks of greens(closer to 450 for me)
    4-5 = ~800-900 stacks of greens <-- where i am now
so far 1200 stacks in, and i anticipate leveling within 1000 stacks, and at my level if i dedicate 1-3 hours to hardcore digging, i can blow through ~100-150 stacks(0 dig time helps alot!!)

about getting the famous "You dig and dig, but find nothing" message:
zones CAN BE DUG OUT! i will notice that after digging a zone for a while, it just goes to pot all of a sudden, and once or twice per Game Hour(not RL hour) 1-2 items are added to the "Pool" of items

    on Leveling:
Rolanberry fields; both deserts and both jungles are wonderfully profitable at my level and above... that being said, depending on your server, dont bother going there. chances are, if myself or someone like me isnt already there, we're well on our way.. and when i get there, i will clean the zone out quicker than you can say "You dig and dig but find nothing" I got lvl 1-4 in zones like pashow marshlands, jugner forest, tarongi canyon and the zones around the 3 primary towns, just count on blowing greens to level... its painful, but my wife and i both have crafts and fishing up, so i have the income stream built to afford this.

Send me a PM if you have any questions, I'm on sylph and can talk ppl through some of this

The chocobo wand was an event back in 2003, yes. Digging skill is completely based on how many times you go riding and dig, that is what I have deduced. I started seriously digging for 1 week, I would go for about 3 hours per day, non stop, buying 10 stacks of greens at a time and using them up. Skill level has nothing to do with what item you CAN dig up, just the time you spend between digs IMO. I've dug up expensive items at lvl 1 digging, and now at lvl 3 (know by riding time) I still go spells without digging up anything, and digging up bonechips and other very common items.

If people are interested in digging, it can be profitable, and I usually at least make my money back when going out for a ride, but generally it takes me synthing logs into lumber and selling, or just being patient as my bonechips sell and I sell other items. At level 2 I dug up a total of 4 gold ores outside of rabao, and that was in a time span of 2 days of digging. In the Jungle, I can dig up just about any log, mohagony, rosewood and lots and lots of luan. I dig up cinnemon and bonechips and pineapples all the time as well. I would estimate i've gone through maybe 400 stacks of greens since I started that serious week of lvling. and prior to that I went through maybe 100 stacks randomly at different times. I think it would be interesting to see if there is an actualy dig/lvl ratio, but don't think anyone is patient enough to do that.... ha ha.

Yep, i can confirm what kumaeru said, there's an additional skill called "Riding" if u quickly go to ur status - craft skill after zoning, u'll be able do see it for like 1 second depends how slow ur computer is, there are also 4~5 blank spots. no mining, logging though.

For those that do not believe in skill levels for things such as Choco Digging, Mining, Logging, etc.

Zone into any area and quickly check your Status > Synth Skill levels.

You will see an elongated list and you can quickly make out what level you are in the "hidden" skill levels.

I will prove this with a fraps pic either later today or tomorrow, for those that don't believe.

Hmm I havn't tired digging yet but it sounds like it may be worth it in the long run. Maybe a silly ignorant question lol, but can you constantly dig in one spot or maybe a small area or do you have to run around all over the map?

A quick question...the original starter of this thread listed that the cheapest greens price was 50 gil....with max fame with windhurst my greens price is 61 gil...

It could be they patched it up since then, that or the chocobo greens merchants will get cheaper yet if I max my fame with all 3 nations...I'm only maxed with windy atm...I'm just curious if anyone can varify they've seen greens for less than 61 gil. Thanks.
seems kind of odd seeing how greens ar 57 gil for me in Windy (don't remember other places) and my fame is maybe like level 4 or 5.

And I remember hearing about some JP guy who said he makes all his money digging awhile back on Midgard

    Choco Digging Info

Check out the Chocobo Digging Guide for some of the best info around on the topic. It can be a huge money sink, but it's pretty exciting (and lucrative) when you dig up a darksteel ore or philosopher's stone.

so does anyone really have any idea... how your digging skill is raised.. thats pretty much all i care about

because the entire item promotion system is incorrect.
just because you dig up the item does not mean you get promoted. Now they may give you some sort of skill up but i doubt it
