Althorn, a couple days ago I had the same problem, went through a stack of greens:mad:
Im guessing that where I was digging, wasn't EXACTLY where the digger had dug.

I'd hazard a guess that the digging skill level might also influence exactly what you can find or how easy it is to dig up certain items.
I've been harvesting for clothcraft skill, and gysal greens are one of the things you can harvest. So I've started digging recently. The only things I've found so far are a single pebble and a wind crystal, so I haven't even recovered the cost of the chocobo rental, but I do it when I'm going from place to place, so I'd have paid the money anyway.
At any rate, last night I was in Tahrongi Canyon, and spotted a Goblin Digger. "Ah-ha!" I thought to myself, and rode in closer. Just as I got close, I realized he was doing the digging animation! "Even better!" I thought to myself, as it meant that I'd get something with minimal effort.
WRONG!
I had five gysal greens on me.
The first four times I got a message stating that, "You sense that an item is nearby," or something to that effect. So I'd move a little and try again. The fifth time I moved a little too far and got the regular old "You dig and dig but don't find anything" message.
Anyone have any insight into the problem I had last night?

Let me tell you my experiences.
I have thrown at least 400,000 gil and two months of my time digging. It is a big money lost and right now I’m starting to see a minimal profit and it doesn’t compare to someone farming crawlers in the newbie area in Windhurst.
Square has made it like other craft skills where only the few who can put millions of gil and all their time into the craft will see a huge profit. Like any other craft, you need to lose a lot of money and time before a minimal profit shows. You might easily reach a digging skill of 1 or 2, but each level after that will become exponentially harder both in time and financial investment.
Dig if you have money to throw away, dig if you like to explore, dig if you have nothing better to do or dig if you are going to make it your main craft. But don’t dig if you think you are going to make money right off the bat.
30mins of digging will cost approximately 5000gil invested in greens and a chocobo. In that 30mins and 72digs you need to find 5000gil to recover the initial cost. If you do find enough materials to recover your initial cost and even make a profit, you only have 7 spaces in the AH for the stuff you find. The money you won’t see right away because your digs don’t return perfect stacks of 12 bonechips and sprigs, so you either sell them individually or keep them in storage till you can make a stack. So you have about 12 different items in waiting, gathering dust. And if you are at the point where you start to see a minimal profit, my point, you still need to recover that initial investment before you are actually profitable.
I have seen two professional diggers, both 70+ in level, in all my digs. If digging was a huge money maker, everyone would be doing it.
I dig because I have a group of friends, 4years strong, that I don’t want to out level and it is a way for me to explore new zones and pass the time. If I want to make money, I’ll camp a NM, kill crawlers and goblins or level a Thief.
I hope this helps.

Some sort of hidden variable or level ahs to exist because yesterday while I was running around doing some quests i saw a high lvl doing some choco digging and she could dig every other second.
Although I have done a lot of digging and I really haven't noticed a difference. I really would like to know how to 'lvl up'.

Would be interesting to see this information if you would provide it.square's updates the only thing i've found about digging is they made the results vary according to the phase of the moon

Maybe you can answer this Firestorm.
I've been digging for a couple months, and my girlfriend just started this weekend.
Why does she have a longer wait time to dig comparatively to me?

edit
the dig results people have found are cool but the whole "secret chocobo leveling" crap is total bs and that should be ignored completely

hehehehe .... if u ask me theres no such thing as this l33t hax0r hidd3n ©h0©b0 l3v3ling skill you're talking about....digging is no different from harvesting items from harvesting points....somewhat random and items vary from zone to zone...and from my research of square's updates the only thing i've found about digging is they made the results vary according to the phase of the moon...i'd watch out for this guy next thing you know he's gonna post a l33t hax0r crazy skilled warp zone to level 1,000,000,000,000,000
P.S. this should be put away in an archive somewhere...not a sticky................................................<sigh>

Passing Tests
Tazirai,
I wonder if you can add any more information about passing these tests. Your experiences with them, which zones, how long and anything else you could add.
I blame my digging habit on you, started after reading your post here, which was linked, from the VNboards.
I've had so much fun digging in so many different zones and must have invested over a month’s time along with a small fortune. I've dug everything from bone chips to gold, but my skill hasn't gone up.
I must be doing something wrong and stopped for a bit out of financial need.
So any advice or hints would be great!
Thanks

curious
I too am curious on how the levling up is done. Do you need to give the "test" item to a npc? or is just digging it up automatically put you to the next level?
