Re: PlayStation Network Accounts Compromised, Personal Information Stolen

Indeed. Nothing to worry about on my end. Oh no, someone has access to my throwaway email account. That's...that's about it.

People use the same password for their e-mail and the things they sign up for with that e-mail account?

That is why I said it was no big deal to begin with.....the people freaking out are the ones that used the same password for their email as they do their bank account ;p

They have one of my 5 emails..... ok
          they have my address...... ok

Even if I had my CC info in there, the one I use for this kind of stuff has a $300 limit, and can not be changed without me physically signing something at my bank.

So you forgot that part where they also got:

            Name
            Birthday
            Address
            Phone Number

That on top of CC info, which is significant info, I'd say. Sony has admitted that such information was likely taken as well via email to PSN users. Its made it to Washington as well as UK officials. They have these facts, too.

But, hey, if you want to believe they just got your email address then live the fantasy. Don't change cards, update passwords or get your credit monitored. Also, don't look both ways before crossing the street. Continue your apathy and let Sony be irresponsible.

My email password was different from the PSN one. I have more passwords than one probably should have to keep track of, but somehow I manage it. Still, the email address is just another thing people can use.

This group of people with poor security hygiene probably includes most PSN users, mind you.

Re: PlayStation Network Accounts Compromised, Personal Information Stolen

Actually companies buy and sell your personal information all the time. Your full name, date of birth, address and age will always be known by companies that you may well never of heard of nevermind interacted with. That and in the UK it's laughably easy to find out everything about someone with just one their name by checking the electoral register. I tracked down an estranged cousin I haven't seen for 15 years by doing just that. Found out where he lived, his occupation, the names of his entire family and with his postcode and house number, information on everyone who lived on his street.

The card info is a concern though I'm less bothered since my bank treats that pretty seriously and with one phone call I can have a card blocked in minutes and a replacement on my doorstep the next day.

Shit like this happens to Blizzard and Squeenix all the time and it takes a while for them to tell everyone since it takes a while to find out the extent of the damage of malicious attacks. They've not done anything illegal and if anything were only acting to stop investors from freaking out. Wrong? Hell yes. Will anyone go to jail for it? No.

You're ridiculous. My PSN account has none of that information in it. If you chose to give that out then that's on you. Go ahead and be all Chicken Little about this but don't throw around a bunch of concern trolling when you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Actually, I have a friend who work for a legal team specialising in fraud and entering false information into stuff like that is technically illegal. Losing people's personal information, while stupid and irresponsible, is not.

Re: PlayStation Network Accounts Compromised, Personal Information Stolen

I think I'll take the risk in entering false information into a PSN account. I mean, maybe they'll throw me behind bars, but that seems incredibly unlikely.

@Neverslip - I didn't say I don't care. I just said it doesn't affect me (not effect). For people who it does affect, then YEAH, they're going to want to work on closing those security holes. And yes, it sucks that this information got out. But it's not exactly the first time something like this has happened.

Unencrypted database of user info. Sheesh! Sony not heard of Encryption? Heck, there's free encryption out there that can be used in corporate environments (if they're tight for money. LOL!).

It wasn't solely directed at you but more of the prevailing attitude I see happening.

Sony fucked up. People trusted their info was secure and it wasn't. This sucks for a lot of people. Whether or not they used different passcodes for different things doesn't take away from the fact that some douchebag stole our information from someone sleeping on the job.

PSN account does not require a CC to activate. Nor do you need to enter one at any time. My PSN account does not have my real name or address and I am fully online and able to dl game demos and other free stuff. I would never purchase anything off PSN though.
