-Emotional damage caused by the lost pants
-The cost of gas to go to another cleaner's farther away for the rest of his life
-He apparently did over 1000 hours of research on the legitimacy of his suit, and so he wanted to charge them lawyer fees for this research he did himself

Note he did not want a new pair of pants or a new suit. He wanted 54 million dollars. Hm.

Anyway, the judge threw out the case and forced the guy to pay for the family's legal and interpretor fees. Last I heard, they were going to try and take away his career as a judge (If he gets that bent out of shape about a pair of pants, how can he possibly handle prosecuting people?) but I'm not sure if they made any progress on it or not.

WTF is happening to that once-great country of yours? I want to apply for my dual-citizenship someday, but it's stupid things like this make me want to just tough out the winters and boredom in Canada.

Lawsuits don't make a country not great. Poor health care does, though. We'll bounce back once Bush is out of office.

Maybe not but all these frivilous lawsuits certainly aren't helping any.

Let's not get into a debate over the significance of frivolous lawsuits in the judgement of how great a country is. People want to get paid. Besides, didn't the Church of England make such a lawsuit recently?

Re: The new trend: Sueing SONY

It's hard to tell if the company suing Sony is a patent troll or not. While they did obviously wait to capitalize and maximize damages, they actually do produce a real product, and as such actually do have a good chance at making a good case. Though their main goal seems to be a settlement for lots of money.

The part they are suing Sony over specifically, is the chip that controlls how the instructions are threaded. It basically sits in front of the Cell chip and divies up all of the instructions to the different cores for work.

The reason they aren't suing AMD or Intel over this is because they don't use a chip to automatically thread programs. They leave it up to the operating system/software developers to thread the programs.

That the geist of it anyway.

Also, isn't "sueing" supposed to be spelled "suing"?

                        It's not even SONY's technology though. It's IBM's.

                        http://domino.research.ibm.com/comm/...nnovation.html

Sony just asked them to make it so they could use it in PS3. But ultimately it's the property of IBM, and as such this company should be filing suit against them if anyone. As I understand though, Cell runs differently in that the SPE's are incapable of being a "master" like the patent in question.

But they still have yet to give the specific patent, for the record.

CELL was jointly developed between Toshiba, Sony and IBM. It's likely the company chose to sue Sony because of the PS3 being out on the market.

Well that's another thing- They probably can't sue IBM, because they aren't the ones profiting from the PS3.

Then again, neither is anyone else *ba-dumppssh*
