I just received an email from one of my undergrad professors. The project I worked on in my Analytical chem class finally got published. If you ever wonder how long peer review articles take to get published, it was submitted in Jan 2010.

I'll see if I can't explain it a little bit:

From my own experience, flies are VERY common around pizza stores, especially during the summer months. It's not from lack of sanitation or anything like that, but more from the fact that people keep coming in and going out very frequently or even holding the door open for a period of time. You obviously don't want them landing in the food, so people develop little tricks to get rid of them -- personally, I used my hat (hold by the bill, and flick it toward them when they're on a hard surface, put it back on your head all in less than a second). So, as much as you might not want to hear it, it wouldn't be TERRIBLY uncommon to have [dead] flies end up in the product or even on a pizza (food would obviously be thrown out if a fly ended up in it).

Which brings me to some customers. Let me put it this way: people who work for food companies, in particular delivery drivers (and managers and inside workers to an extent) have a VERY good memory, especially when it comes to people who don't tip (for delivery drivers) or are complete assholes (for managers). If you're one of those people reading this, I recommend NEVER to order from the place you had the problem from for at least 2 years to allow for adequate time for everyone to either forget you or leave that company outright. Those who DO still order often have surprises in their food; I've seen Visine put into pizzas, I've seen... oddly shaped... black olives on others, I've seen it dropped (inside the box, which basically makes it look horrible), and I've heard stories of even worse things occurring that would make you not want to eat out ever again.


So a fly on the bottom of the pizza is just a nice subtle touch, as someone who has worked in that industry.

I mentioned that the first company makes odd but awesome financial reports. Those include This years' pop-up book and Last years' pizza menu. Sadly they don't have ones from even earlier. Be sure to look closely at the very last page of the pizza menu though, it's a nice touch, especially having worked in that [pizza] industry for a long time.
