I'm in the market for a new mp3 player that isn't an iPod. Any suggestions?

I have a Creative Zen V Plus that I really like. The one flaw I noticed it has is the clip that comes with it isn't great. If you plan to wear your mp3 player while bike riding or running you would want a different holder.

Some idea of what you're looking for in a music player, and what you don't like about iPods in particular would go a long way towards helping people make suggestions.

Something with an honest to god on/off button and being able to get my music out of the player once it goes in would be the big issues. Those two have lead to a long and bitter relationship with my iPod.

The iPod did a lot right though, I dig interfaces that aren't needlessly complicated since I rarely need all the extra features. I want a volume control that's pretty flexible. I really dislike how some media players (mp3, CD, or otherwise) will have the minimum volume set to something that damages my hearing.

Durability would be a plus.

If you want a small mp3 player to work out with I have a SanDisk Sansa and I really like it. Good clip, easy to use, several sound settings for different genres of music, it's pretty durable and works with a few different music players. Only downside is that it lacks a slot for an SD card.

Edit: Just looked them up on Amazon and several of the new ones come with a Mini SD card slot.

I use iPod Rip to pull music off of my iPod if I no longer have it on my computer. Which...rarely happens. What didn't you like about the on/off feature for the iPod? It worked fine for me.

What I don't like about other MP3 players are things like extraneous clips, too many buttons, or overly complicated interfaces.

Once upon a time all I needed from an MP3 player was the ability to play music, with no extra features. But now, it's like, I don't want a bunch of devices, so I need more functionality. Thank goodness for phones that play music.

What didn't you like about the on/off feature for the iPod? It worked fine for me.

It takes too long and my iPod was really fussy about the button holding that would actually make it turn off. So now that the screen on my iPod is starting to go, I want to invest in something where I can just flick a switch and turn it off, not rely on a shady Apple interface. God I hate Apple interfaces.

The Sansa looks promising. I'll have to take a closer look at it this weekend.

I own a Sony NWZ S545 16GB player. I use a Skullcandy brand earphone over the Sony supplied one. I mostly use it to listen to NPR But I can watch my anime on the go with this as well as listen to tons of music. It even has your on/off switch

Well speaking of MP3 players, I been using a new iPod Touch today. It's my son's but he wasn't home when it came in the mail so I was futzing with it this afternoon. (Yes, I got permission to open it.) He played with it for a couple hours tonight but has let me indulge myself the rest of the evening. I just got done draining it dry by streaming anime. lol The screen rez is very crisp. Its very thin and light...almost scary because its a bit slippery. I am really liking it it and since my video iPod finally took a dump (nearly $200 if I want it repaired), I might invest in one of these if Verizon doesn't get the iPhone pretty damn quick. lol

Why am I up this early on a saturday? ah yes, my housemate a postman had to get up early and decided to have an almighty dump in the loo next door the toilet bowl is such an amplifier for vegetarian farts.
