I didn't read ALL the posts but I thought I'd toss in my opinion. Game for me runs fine on my ATI 9200 Laptop with 256megs of ram, my media center box that has an ATI x700pro and 512, and my XFX 7800GS. They all run great, well my laptop is a bit slow, but that can't be helped....it's only 256 megs of ram.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say more than likely it's RAM related. If the whole PC is crashing then it's more than obviously a hardware issue, and if it just crashes to desktop more than likely it's software (drivers or corruptness, etc) that's at fault.

PS. I apologize to the mods for this, but you sir are a moron. I guess if you ran a red light and hit another car it'd be your cars mfgr fault.

If your pc is crashing all the time this program is a invaluable diagnostic program.
Pol has a Check Files feature, if the game is crashing use it. If you get alot of corrupted files then you are closer so a solution.

Overheating can be a issue with video cards (Buy a fan for your case) along with power supply issues (if your computer randomly reboots). I know allot of those video cards don't use fans (I think thats a good thing) but if the heat is not being removed from your case that can cause crashes.

And remember just installing video drivers w/o uninstalling the old video drivers can affect performance.

And if all else fails reinstall windows.

Quick question do you play any other (newer 3d) games on your pc or just ffxi?
Do the crashes happen playing any other 3d games?

The OP stated stuff about how SE didn't test for other Video Cards and were favoring NVidia. I pointed out that SE did test them out and it's his problem for not looking at their results.

Not like FFXI supports every single NVidia either, depending what series of GForce you have there is a set limit you can go on the drivers if you want it to work right. If you update beyond that limit on the drivers the game results in some serious flicker problems.

Besides that you really got to think about it, the drivers are the instructions telling the device how to operate. You keep updating those drivers and eventually you'll end up with instructions that the device can't do or will do but ends up causing unwanted results in other areas. Really shouldn't keep updating drivers just because it's the "lastest version out". Eventually Software does hinder the Hardware, especially when the software is doing more to compensate for what the Hardware can't.

In that particular case it is even worse on Video Cards. If you want something to keep updating it should be the DirectX but the hardware drivers generally have a limit of how high you should be trying to push it before upgrading the device.

On older videocards its is often better to use the older drivers, unless you are playing brand new games or there was a fix for your card line for the game you play.

The whole Plays best on Nvidia thing is just like the plays best on Alienware, its just a advertisement. I know I can build a faster system then Delienware(alienware) for much less money and it will play games better. (and look better also)

FFxi uses D3D not Open Gl and ATI video cards are normally faster for D3D applications. (Nvidia being fastest for Open GL)

Now I have owned both ati and nvidia cards and yes I do think Nvidia does have better drivers but the ATI windows drivers are nearly as good and in some respects better.
