Just to point out with this blame game. Square-Enix did test other graphics cards to see if they work. The list is even on their website and I see clear as day on it shows a lot of the Radeon series on it, the only thing is they only tested the AGP types and using Catalyst 7.83.

More detail about how it's freezing on you is needed to get a better answer to the problem. One thing I had come across is for a while my problems were because of an unstable connection to my ISP.

ok here goes i sometimes also get crashes, but that happens extremely rare, but it only happens in yughott grotto, delkfutt tower, or sometimes Giddeous, but rarrely in giddeous, other areas are fine iunno why. but still the crashes are not often, maybe a crash after every 2 days worth of playtime or so. and my computer is pretty awesome:

      P4c 2.4ghz >>> 3.3ghz 1.1ghz FSB
      2 x 512 MB PC3500 geil golden dragon @ 2-3-3-6
      Ati Hercules 9800Pro 128MB
      3dmark2001se : 19758
      3dmark2003 : 6394

i blame them on the Ati Drivers, cuz ati does havea bad history with drivers howeever i just recently upgraded to the catalysts 4.4 and yet to have experienced any lock ups. anyway those are just my 2 cents

yeah ATI's bad history of drivers was 3 years ago, get over that

i have a 9600XT with cat4.4 and never expierenced crashes. AGP Aperature should be 128MB and expierement with fast writes. I turn mine off and it works well, some other need to have their's on to work well.

noldahr, I'm sorry, your ignorance offends ME.

The game crashes a lot, wow Square must blow. I know, I'll stick it to them by quitting without really thinking or bothering to figure out the problem.

You've obviously got a problem with your computer somewhere along the lines, maybe even somewhere between the chair and keyboard. I have no idea what others suggested, I read through about half of the first page and after reading a few of your posts I just had to come throw in my 2 Gil.

Basic stuff first, make sure you're running the newest drivers, but make sure you're also properly uninstalling older drivers and not just putting down layer after layer of driver sets. Especially if you've ever had another brand of video card, or even if you swapped cards but stuck with the same brand. Use driver cleaner (http://www.driverheaven.net) to completely clean the system of the old driver set before installing the new set. Use a program like memtest86 (http://www.majorgeeks.com) to test your RAM for any failures. Use a program like Prime95 (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm) to test your CPU for stability, especially if it's overclocked. Make sure your power supply is up to snuff for your system. Make sure you have all the newest windows updates. Use a hardware monitor to make sure your CPU is running at a decent temperature (Hopefully no more than 60*C, which is high for an AMD CPU with poor to moderate airflow at room temperature.) Clense your system of Spyware using programs like Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and Spy Bot Seek and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org) Try other games to see if any of them crash at all to see if the symptoms are happening specific to Final Fantasy or if it's more broad than that. Make sure your DirectX version is up to date. Make sure you're using the newest drivers for your motherboard, as well as sound card, and even your NIC. If none of that helps, go as far as uninstalling Final Fantasy XI and re-install it. If THAT doesn't help, then go as far as to email me or PM me or reply back to this thread. I'll do anything I can to help, and I'll be happy to do so. But shameless finger pointing is rediculous. Be scientific about problems and try to solve them, don't just stomp your feet and start talking crap about how much everything sucks. I've been running the game on my system (nForce 2 + 9800) since October without a single glitch that wasn't due to a network problem, and it's run just as well on my wifes system (KT333 + 8500, upgraded to a 9600).

Yeh Radeons have problems with the game, my comp always crashed but i found out it was overheating problem, what i did (temporarily) opened up the side of the computer and got a small desk fan to blow into there and that stopped the problem.

Sorry, but Radeons do not have problems with this game, other than the one with AA not working, but that pertains to all graphics cards because of the way FFXI renders graphics.

People need to stop pointing fingers at S-E and realize that its their computer

My game has crashed tonight 9 times in 40 mins. A few were freezes, a few were reboots and the remaining were crashes to desktop.

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro , installed and tried 3.9, 4.1 and 4.5 Catalyst Drivers and still got the problem. Even turned VPU recovery off, still crashes.

Today is the hottest day of the year, 29 degrees celcius, i have a feeling its to do with overheating. I've never had so many crashes in such a short space of time. I'm going to open the case and see if it carries on crashing after that.
                  This chocobo has finished.

                    My computer randomly restarts.
I think thats a Virus or program called Blaster. I've heard of this being on Windows XP operating systems occasionally. My friend had a random restart problem with his computer (was brand new) and thats what it was. I don't know very much about this but that MAY be your problem. Again not 100% on this. You might want to research a bit more on this before you take any actions about it.

I dunno if i had a blaster, but my pc froze 5 secs at a time on ffxi it froze STILL for leik 5 seconds after a few of those freezes it automatically turned off, i bought a new HD thinkin it was the HD then i updated bios and everythin , later i open my pc check my motherboard and i spot a burn spot... A TINY lil circuit was burned and that blocked flow of my pc and that caused the problem.

As for grafik cards! radeon is a great company, and I personally am a Nvidia person, and i dont liek peopel insulting nividia. There is a tendency to cheer for the underdog * ATI* but when one company makes it doesnt mean they sell out. I was cheerin for the underdog too *nvidia* when voodoo was on the market. And all the peopel sayin Pick a radeon this and that. Dude check the friggin market. For every radeon there is a Nvidia that does as good as the radeon if not better. im aware that radeon is great for gamin . but for versatility Nvidia is the card. I do 3d on maya, photoshop, Movie editing. and nividia never let me down. Anywayz i got carried away.

My moptherboard was the problem, To all the people bitchin about their cards and game freezin.

FINAL FANTASY XI PLAYS LIKE A CHARM WITH ALL COMPUTERS THAT QUALITY TO THEIR *REQUIRMENT* list. SO STOP SAYIN SQUARE BLOWS AND SHIT. i was playin since beta and it worked great since then. It's probably fault installment or bad drivers. I recommend you do these.

                        -Check off for viruses ..duh
                        -Check for trojans
                        -Check for Spyware
                        -Re/install drivers.
                        -Re/install BIOS drivers.
-Open you pc, check if its heatin probs.
-take out parts and either reinstall them in another slot or just reinstall em in the same slot.
-CHECK MOTHERBOARD VERY VERY CLOSELY. see if there is any black spots or black area aroudn a chip.
                        -Restart PC.
-If it doesnt work, you got a freak problem on ur hand and i say u either call sumone or take ur pc to COMPUSA. or sumthin liek that.

wish u the best of luck.

                        my 2 cents.
                        -Rogue.

Re: FFXI Crashes.. about to quit

I'm still working through this problem (pol.exe application error crash to WinXP) on my current system:

                                P 805D 2.66 >> 3.33
                                Asus P5ND2-SLI
                                Aopen DDR2-667 1GB
                                Albatron 7600GT 256MB
                                WinXP Pro 2002 SP2

                                Update:

Set the FSB back to 133 (was @ 166), and now the game is rock solid... go figure. Guess I'll just run at 2.66GHz -_-|||
