  • Cartoon Network to air *gasp* Eva?

Yes, according to a press release (which I have yet to find a link to) from Cartoon Network, Neon Genesis Evangelion (in addition to Nadesico, Dai-Gaurd, and the *sigh* dubbed version of Robotech) will air during Cartoon Network's Giant Robot Week later this month. Will it be heavily edited? You bet it will! However, it doesn't look like they're going to air the whole series, just the first few episodes.

This from the network that changed the name of Candidate for Goddess to Pilot Candidate; I can see why there are a lot of skeptical people out there right now, even with Cartoon Network's press release. Eva airing on CN at around the 4-6 pm slot will definetly lead to heavy editing. Maybe we'll see more if the episodes prove popular. You can read the whole thread (20 pages and counting) here at the CN Toonami forums:

Arrrrrrrrrrgh  They could at least put it on Adult Swim or take off Cowboy Bebop and show it late at night. Putting it on Toonami will result in major editing *sigh* well at least they are finally showing it over here.

Ugh, EVA is just not going to be EVA with all the editing they are going to have to do... and they are only airing the first few episodes?? They would do much better to put it on adult swim and uncut. I guess they are just going for the notoriety of the EVA series and don't really care about its integrity. stupid TV execs...

i don't get what they're hoping to achieve.

with the religious references and scenes important to the philosophy of Evangelion edited out, the series will be left as an empty shell of senseless violence with no real plot. hey, that reminds me of about 90% of other anime

Bah! F*cking bastards. I hope they all get cancer and die. I love anime. Not cartoons. The difference between Anime and Cartoons is, Anime is grand. And Cartoons are edited to shit. What next?
Rurouni Kenshin? I should hope not. And if they put Fushigi Yuugi on Toonami, know what Imma do? Piss on thier door. Simple as that. Well, prepare for the first wave of edited eva nerds to storm the us. * gets on his eva nerd protector *

damn, you just reminded me about fushigi yuugi. i love that series. too bad it's probably one of the biggest candidates to be picked up by cartoon network, being the classic fan favourite that it is.

(Note: I went a little overboard with the explinatives in this one; it is reccomended that you don't read it if this sort of thing turns you off.:angel

They need to make another fucking channel for anime and other adultish cartoons. They have the rights to almost enough to do that, and since Ted Turner, the fuckhead behind Craptain Faggot and the Faggotqueers, has stepped down, they can actually get a damned good 3rd channel. They could label the hell out of it that it is for mature people and leave all of the good shit in. And if they don't have the assets (because of their fucking ridiculous editting) they can get rid of that worthless piece of shit that is supposed to my nostolgic that they call Boomerang. Who gives a fuck about the old shit by Hanna and Barbera. They show enough of that on the regular CN. I mean, 95% of their content of their Cartoon Cartoon shit, washed up old cartoons, and editted-to-hell anime. *pants* I'm too tired to bitch any more. I may redo this making sense and removing the wordy dirds tomorrow, but that certainly let off some stress.
Bah... prentend there's a pretty sig pic here.

                Showing eva?
What.... you mean all 26 episodes edited down the the size of a standard commerical to be aired during the regular programming where we'd normally see ads?
                I can see it now...
                *Opening Sequence*
Shinji: I don't want to pilot the Eva!
                *Ending Sequence*
                *Preview of next episode*
Shinji "I don't want to pilot the..."
                *end of preview*

But what didn't he want to pilot?! I guess we'll have to watch the next episode.

yeah i think this is pretty f*cking ridiculous not only for the fact that editing is a cardinal sin of anime, but also, what the hell are all the children that watch toonami gonna understand about a wonderfully complex and highly thought provoking masterpiece such as eva!? this is yet another disgrace that i will have to stand idly by and watch dirty the good name of anime.....sigh...is there no god.....and btw let us pray that rurouni kenshin doesnt follow suite..tho i fear it may...what a world.....

Cartoon Network had Dragonball Z's "Mr. Satan" addressed as "Hercule."

They changed the anime "Candidate for Goddess" to "Pilot Candidate."

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I doubt I'm not, because I've studied the philosophy of Evangelion for about a year now...), but Evangelion contains religious references from all the major religions, including references to The Bible, Kabballa, and other religious beliefs. The name Neon Genesis Evangelion basically means "Gospel for the New Century."

Not to meantion some of the violence which would be considered too much for children even when edited. And the nudity and sexual situations involving underage children.

How would Cartoon Network be able to air something dealing with these references, when they're scared to keep the original name of an anime title because it had the word "Goddess" in it?

I saw Pilot Canidate. They did have the title Canidate for Gossess on the beginning theme, though they officially called it Pilot Canidate and avoided the word goddess.

That's the question on everyone's mind, Pai Pai Master. Neon Genesis Evangelion contains many religous overtones (mostly Christian) and references. And towards the end of the series, the subject matter becomes far too complex and intangible for the typical Cartoon Network Dragon Ball Z, Zoids, etc fans; they'll struggle to even "get" the ending. But I'm just generalizing again. If this goes as planned, we'll only get the first three or four episodes. If I remember correctly, these episodes contain the following things that are subject to being edited:

Minor spoilers. Shinji's first battle in Eva 01. Here we see "blood" spewing out of the eva's head, as well as the when Shinji goes into "berserk' mode and tears apart the angel. Tell me, if they do air the rest of the series, how the hell are they going to air the episode where Eva 01 "eats" the S organ of the angel?

A little fuzzy on this, but I believe it's one of the earlier episodes. Shinji falling down while visiting Rei's apartment, and his hand lands on her breast. This seems a little racy for the Toonami slot. The list goes on.

You get the idea. Most of the religous references come later in the series. The most references we get in the earlier episodes are cross-shaped explosions and references to "Adam" and the Dead Sea Scrolls, the second most people are not even aware of. There's a lot of lore behind Eva, even the imprinting on Gendo's ceiling/floor as well as the general overall designs of the Evangelions (ie: one of the eva's longs arms (unit 3) is directly related to an ancient folk lore. don't quote me on this it was a long time ago that I read this stuff). Editing it will just make the confusion worse.

Actually...the 4 Evas are referenced religiously to the 4 barons of hell...

The descriptions are as follows: The first baron has a single large eye, the second has a large horn on his forehead, the third is bright red has 4 eyes and 2 jaws and the fourth is the color black with extremely long arms.
