Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
So where's the actual application at? I was scanning for the URL in both links but didn't see it - probably just missed it? Or did they not actually post it yet?

Applications will be accepted starting mid-June. An announcement will be made at a later time when the date has been finalized.
Excaibur. Done. The fact that we will be able to change our character names is making me rethink starting over... /think
FFXIV Balmung Server
Tenro Matashi
PLD|GLD - MIN|BOT - ALC|ARM|BSM|CRP|GSM|LTW|WVR
Dux is in the EU territories and has no incentives to leave Ragnarok. I think a few others are going to stay on Ragnarok because they're from the EU. I don't know about the others who are in EU territories and have not yet played the game (Firewind was one of them I think)
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
I just don't see any incentive to really leave Ragnarok. Having to wait until 2-4AM (or get up at 5-6AM) just to get shit done on FFXI is what wore me out the last two times I tried getting back into the game. When your Prime Time is bang in the middle of the Japanese going to bed and the Americans just starting their lunch breaks meant about 70% of my shouts were at people Bazzaring and bots. The other 30% got answered but the parties usually died before they got going because of not enough people.
Latency is going to be insane if all of the NA/EU marked servers are in the US (like I suspect they will be) regardless of where I go, so I might as well go for a server where people in my time zone will be playing.
If you ping the US/EU server, you'll be able to check your ping against it. Most are getting under 100ms, even in the EU.
When I was on Palamecia, I used to ping 70-90ms. After moving to Ragnarok, it slowly started to degrade and after 8 months, it went from 150ms to 300+ms. I've always been able to ping low, really low, latencies to Japan. Never figured out why until very recently when someone told me that majority of commercial traffic goes over leased military fiber, several which runs to Japan via the underwater Trans-Pacific cable systems. Since there's less traffic going to Japan than to California, I don't experience nasty latencies like those on the Mainland connecting to servers in Japan.
Sorry, I trailed off in the last post ... I went off tangent.
Anyway, was going to say, latency can sometimes be caused by network congestion as well as hardware issues. Ragnarok during 1.0 was still situated in Japan (I thought, but I could be wrong, as I heard rumors that it was set-up at Eidos' HQ in UK or France) but since there were a lot of traffic going all the way to EU, there was a lot of lag that I experienced both in terms of hardware lag as well as lag from EU players (Their responses to the server and then having it sent to me to be displayed on my PC)
Anyway, hopefully moving forward, this new type of "voluntary" system is for the best. I don't get the incessant whining considering most MMO games out there force you into a sandbox of region play (and often times you don't even have recourse if they start locking IPs out)

I just wonder what servers our bretherens (and sisters, too!) in the Oceanic zones are heading for. Is it the JP servers or will it be one of the NA based ones? I need to know so I can have a lot of players to group up with, instead of running around aimlessly in an empty city like back in 1.0
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
Decided to try out Excalibur as Etra has suggested and will bring along 4 or 5 of my IRL friends for the ride. We're skewed way out, though (Alaska, Hawaii) compared to East Coast. If you don't mind doing stuff at 3am your way then we'll be happy to do group stuff with everyone else. :p
