re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010
It's all a "sense of perspective".
In a world like EQ, you have the generic archetypes of people who are used to AND EXPECT the lore. People who understand the need for factions, religions, races, etc.
It's even to the point in EQ that people have NAMES indicative of the lore/world/time their in, and they fully immerse themselves in the game. When I first joined (Keep in mind, this is when the PS2 JUST came out with the Network Adapter, and they gave everyone with them beta invites for EQOA, so I was still in HS), my name was Renmanx, and I felt SOOO out of place.
For all it's fantastic story-telling and character integration and cutscenes, the fact that FFXI is "mainstream" kind of bugs me. I doubt I'd see a "Legolassss" or "Yunaaaa" in EQ.
I get the feeling (hell, even reading some posts on this forum) that a lot of people who play aren't really "suited for online play", I should say.
The mentality of the people who play "nerd" games like EQ is so ingrained, that its a tough nut to crack if you're trying to play and sell people some bullshit, whereas in FFXI, we're more willing to accept it because we lowered our standards.
Of course, the flip side of this is WoW, which had a "Come one, come all" attitude catered to casual and hardcore gamers from the start.
It feels to me like FFXI spent a lot of time trying to find it's identity.
I blame subjobs. I wouldn't mind switching roles (Not so obscure, even 16Bit FF's had you doing that), but subjobs really pidgeon-hole a lot of positions to be one or the other.
Someone mentioned that Melee either sub /SAM or /NIN based on the situation.
PLD/NIN is really the only acceptable tank nowadays.
Everyone says "get moar haste".

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010
OMG thanks for the Nostalgia. I remember so many of these times durring my EQ days. Getting randomly instapwned by some NPCs in a city who didnt like my religion was always fun lol. I used to love going into the Plane of Nature on my Druid and poking the Goddess and giving her cupcakes and stuff and thinking about how my RL friend who is a Dark Elf would get a massive curbstomping just for getting close.Originally posted by Grizzlebeard View PostWasn't just racism but also your religious views. I remember walking a half elf follower of Rallos Zek, the God of War, I'd made into Kaladim, the dwarf capital, and while half elfs are tolerated there as soon as I came within sight of the Brell's temple a host of stumpies ran out and roflstomped me.
Also it used to make me quite angry in FFXI if I was in trouble how a "guard" would just sit and laugh while I died two feet from them >.<

Probably in the "bin of suggestions we should've listened to during alpha testing".Originally posted by Yellow Mage View Postwhere do you think they would have gotten the ideas for an inventory auto-sort and even an official windowed mode in the first place?

The horrible PC backlash from an action like that would put a major dent in both of their MMO subscriptions.

Devil's Advocate inc.
So, I'm the last one to buy in to all this "S-E is killing off FFXI" crap. But, what if, once they have secured their "blue sea" investment in FFXIV, they then go around and ban everybody who currently uses Windower. Maybe instead of them not noticing when people use it "except when someone is 'blatantly' cheating," they have instead turned a blind eye, as apparently a grand majority of their PC players use it, and that's a lot of income they would lose over some third-party tool which is ultimately a grand insult to how they designed the game in the first place. Someone who actually uses Windower might be able to give more examples than I do, but S-E is obviously not unaware of its existence, as where do you think they would have gotten the ideas for an inventory auto-sort and even an official windowed mode in the first place?
I may be the last Tarutaru RDM on a PC . . . and I'm subbing /PLD. You want a different kind of RDM in your party you say? Well, tough, everybody else was using infinity-swap macros and Spellcast!
Muahahahahahhahahahahaahahahaha!!!1!

Quite possibly the most thoughtful, hilarious, insulting, and all-around great thing you have ever said.Originally posted by Omgwtfbbqkitten View PostHell, if most people are saying they can't let go of FFXI because of "all my hard work" then how can I say no to FFXIV if they won't be there?
Five stars, would gladly read again.

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010
Ya know, the thought of ever actually leaving FFXI has never crossed my mind in the 5 years I been playing. I'm certainly going to be playing FFXIV, but I doubt I could just pick up and leave FFXI completely. As long as it's still a good game and I have friends in it, I'll just have to settle for playing both. And hell, there's more of a chance I would quit FFXIV before I actually quit FFXI at this point.

OMG! I remember those days! I remember exploring and some mob chasing me so I ran up to these guards hoping they'd kill it like other guards did by my town and NOPE! They slaughtered my ass! My son was still in high school when I beta'd that game and he laughed his rear end off....I wanted to strangle him. ><Originally posted by WishMaster3K View PostGMs in FFXIV?
OH THAT REMINDS ME, I know that in Everquest Online Adventures (keep in mind, this game is older than FFXI and not nearly as popular), if some monster is beating the shit out of you, and you're clearly running away, and you clearly PASS an outpost gaurd. it'll jump in and fight it for you.

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010
Things from WoW I do not want:
1. The ability to fall off of anything anywhere and die.
2. Crappy camera angles. I think FFXIV will support controllers so this shouldn't be an issue.
3. Getting aggro while on a mount. Which wouldn't be so bad, if some mobs didn't have the ability to knock you off your mount. Usually after I've got like 5 of them on me from trying to ride past them all. EVIL.
4. Single job per character. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO Don't do it.
Things I do want from WoW:
1. Jumping capabilities. Nothing major, just let us jump over some stuff instead of going around it.
2. Riding my mount in town, and being able to talk to NPCs while on it.
3. Guild/Linkshell banks to which certain people can be given more access than others.
4. Easier fucking crafting.
5. Swimming.

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010
I played EQOA and the guards were exactly like that. though getting to the guards alive was an entirely different matter. It also depended on their faction alignment.
Meaning, Dark Elf guards don't give a shit about your human ass, but they'll jump to defend a fellow dark elf from danger. If you're partied with a dark elf, the dark elf guards are still inclined to kill you afterward if you're human, but if you kill their enemies more and more, they'll reluctantly accept you.
So yeah, basically, racism in a video game. I remember meeting a curious dark elf who crossed the entire continent to see Queynos. She was from Freeport, a neutral area (until EQ2 made it the "evil" starter point), so the human guards there were just peachy with dark elves and anyone else, just like Highpass. Humans of Qeynos don't like the dark elves though and this one hadn't started building her faction rating with Humans in Qeynos (they hate the Gnolls, kill them and you're buddies with humans. When this dark elf stopped to talk to me, the nearby guard killed her and she had her binding point back in Freeport, about two hours of walking from Qeynos, lol.
So basically, if you're running for help in EQOA, you're hopefully in friendly territory.
There were a few things about EQOA that were better than FFXI, too. Being primarily western in audience, "need before greed" was common practice. Also, people weren't all that picking about camps, particularly given that any camp was a bit of a walk, but that made getting the camp feel more like a journey anyway. People were way more chill, even though our EXP death penalties made the ones in FFXI like nothing.
Its basically why I think people who complain about EXP loss in FFXI have not other point of reference but FFXI. If you died in EQOA, you went into and experience debt. You'd get 50% of your EXP toward your next level, but the other 50% would go toward the debt. If you died a lot, then you'd be in debt for a while.
