One thing I love about having a BLM sub early on, is the wonderful spell Bind. I know RDM's get this at 11, but i'm only level 18... And the great thing is, I can cast bind on the mob, and then pull off one of those heals that makes the mob hate me oh-so-much, but its stuck there -- so my party can then proceed to beat the crap out of it, and make it forget about me, and by the time its unbound, i have nothing to worry about AND i've saved my PT
    Die?

Clear Minds don't stack, or at least I don't think they do. Nylia is a 30 WHM/15 BLM, she has both clear mind abilities. Clear Mind is only listed once under job traits and she doesn't seem to regain MP any faster now than before she got 15 BLM sub.

The perk of having Clear Mind on both WHM and BLM though is for when you are leveling up your subjob. A 20 WHM/10 BLM will have clear mind from being a WHM and a 15 BLM/7 WHM will have clear mind from being a BLM. It makes a big difference.

Other abilities that don't stack are Def Bonuses from Warrior and Paladin. I was disappointed when I discovered this. I had finally made it to 20 PLD/10 WAR and was hoping for the warrior def bonus to kick in... nothing. Physical Defense Up is listed once under Job Traits, there was no addition bonus for having it twice. I will get an addition bonus to def at 30 from Paladin but thats because its physical def up II.

The summary of this thread should be pick whichever one you like from Blackmage, Redmage or Summoner for a subjob, they all add useful skills/abilities/spells. Icemage highlighted the pros of all three pretty well.

If clear mind doesn't stack then why did they make this change?

Seriously, though, with the 10/21/03 patch SMN now also gets Clear Mind, at levels 15 and 30 (and also 45 and 60, but we're talking about subjobs).
I'm asking because I don't know which is true and would really like to know

Summoners get a better version of clear mind at level 30, I'd guess.

Clear Mind, at least the version I got at a WHM at level 20, increases MP recovery by 3 each tick. In other words when I first get mana back I get 15, then 16, then 17, etc, instead of the 12, 13, 14 as would normally be the case.

Maybe the one SMN get at 30 is +6 or something.

You forgot to add the very nice spell Aspir 50/25 BLM .

... no, I didn't. I deliberately left Drain and Aspir off of the list because your Dark Magic skill as /BLM is going to be too low for either spell to be of any use.

I'd toss in WAR, PLD, and NIN is viable subs but have high requirements to be used effectively.

I'll give a good rundown when I get back from school.

so if ur a whm/smn a smn won't be good becuz why?? i don't get why the summoner wouldn't be that good. Correct me if i'm wrong but can a summoner sub still get all the summons?? if so why not go for the summoner?? you can summon a beast and let it take the brute of attacks maybe pull aggro while ur pt members attack then heal ur party members? or won't that happen??

I currently am only a lvl 8 whitemage! i haven't been able to play the game for a week since somethings screwed up with my computer! but hopefully it's fixed tonight! or this weekend. currently im stuck in the tomb by East Ronfaure! i don't have a map i was playing when my game got screwed up which resulted in the loss of ability to play game! now when i get my game working(computer acturally) i will be in the tomb with NO! map! im stuck in this darn cave. i logged in at my friends house and i tried getting out but i had to go!

If you go for summoner, go for the abilities and mp only. You can get most of the summons still but they wont be that great. No you wont be able to get them all either. There are lvl requirements and such still so some you wont get all of em. Just remember that SMN is your sub so the stats are halved so the summons are halved also. Full summons have trouble sometimes so halved ones are definitly going to have problems.

Teleport for WHM allows the WHM and/or party to teleport to whichever crag location that teleport spell is for. In contrast, warp for BLM takes the target player to his/her home point location. Keep in mind though that BLM at higher levels will get escape which allows the BLM and/or party to warp everyone out of the current dungeon he/she/they are in.

                          Quick question....

Would a Whm/Smn be good for Mithra? Because thats what I want to be but point of having Summoner for your sub is to just have good and high amounts of MP so I can cast more cures and stuff? I mean... Summoning with White mage as your main dont sound right to me because summons sound like they no good because drain MP and they dont do good damage.... So basically you go for Whm/Smn for the good job traits right? Or would be a Whm/Blm be better for MP saving? Thanks in advance!

I have been lvling whitemage and might stick with. Would it affect my mp a whole lot if i sub redmage instead of blackmage as a elvaan? I realy dont feel like lvling blackmage and would much rather lvl redmage, but if i would be gimping myself by subing redmage i could maybe go through the suffering of lvling blackmage.

You wouldn't be gimping your character.. but it's true that subbing blackmage gives you more of an MP bonus than subbing redmage does.

After first thinking that Black Mage would be a job I hate (at level 12, my elemental magic was at 4 >_>), I soon started to have fun nuking mobs from afar. Partying with a black mage is a blast, I must admit - if it weren't for Elvaans' low INT, I would try to level my blm to max.

Blm is a very nice sub - I mainly want it for warp+escape though, I must admit. Together with the whm teleports, you'll have a very easy time traveling from place to place. Yup, I'm lazy.

However, if you have more fun subbing a redmage, go for the redmage. You wouldn't be gimping your character.

You might want to give summoner a try just to see how you like it - now THAT would be a nice MP boost. ^^
