  • Practical use of Great Sword in XP PT 69+?

As most people who've read my posts know, I used to be a firm "hater" of the Great Sword. In all honesty, I knew there was only one good WS (Spinning Slash) and that PLD couldn't get it til 69. I saw some PLD's using GS in xp PTs, sacrificing some defense, shield blocking, and shield bashing for a laughable Power Slash that would miss or a 50 damage Sickle Moon.

This all changes when you get Spinning Slash

Last night I was invited to this PT config :
BRD, RDM, PLD, RNG, WAR, BLM

At the time we were trying to think of a viable skillchain... there aren't many good skillchains available between those 3 melees, so best the RNG could think fo was Sidewinder > Rampage > Swift Blade, which would really be pure crap honestly. All good RNG will gain TP faster than other melees (except SAM), so in my opinion, unless they are skillchaining with a THF or /THF, they should always go solo (if you are confident in your hate holding abilities).

Thus we were left with Full Break > Swift Blade, which as most of you know is mediocre at best. So 2-300 damage Full Break -> 50-150 damage Swift -> 50-150 damage Darkness? Oh boy, call the press now!

So this is where I got the funky idea of trying GS out... of course I asked my PT first if they were ok with it... as long as I could keep aggro with GS they were fine with it. So I busted it out, and here are some vague numbers I can recall:
Normal hits from Espadon : 10-25 damage
    Swift Blade : 50-150 damage
Normal hits from Flamberge : 60-80 damage
    Spinning Slash : 250-650 (!!!) damage

These were on IT bark spiders in Dragon's Aery. I was using Fish Chiefkabobs (thanks Icemage ) and pretty much standard equipment. I had some +ATK gear (Byrnie +20, RG Collar +4, Behemoth +5) and the occasional Minuet + Madrigal (although it was usually Ballad2 + Madrigal). I didn't stack Berserk with any WS because I feeeeeeeeear Sickle Slash... even with 1hs+shield it can do me hit me for 780 if it crits >_< I don't even want to think what it would be if I used berserk.

So anyway, I was gaining TP fine, even the occasional times when I had double Ballad instead of Madrigal. I kept up TP nicely with the WAR, and our new skillchain was as follows:
    Mistral Axe (3-400) > Spinning Slash (250-650) > Light (50-450)
Low damage on Light was due to the fact we didn't always get a Light Threnody on time. Even with the RNG spamming Slugshots and Heavyshots and the BLM MB'ing with Firaga III and such, I did not have trouble holding aggro. The loss of defense from the Shield, the enmity from general's shield, and enmity from shield bash were thus negligible. However, the loss of shield blocking was very noticeable. I kind of felt more like a WAR tank now... takes more damage, but deals more damage... but it was an interesting experience.

I think this could work even better on other monsters (hopefully ones that don't have crit moves like Sickle Slash, Jet Stream, Screwdriver, etc) and with a good WHM main healer (we had no main healer, I was close to dying several times  ) I'm not trying to say that GS can totally replace 1hs+shield in XP PT... definitely not. For example, 70+ xp pt if I had a RNG and a THF, or other two melees that don't need me in skillchain, I'd just use Joyeuse for the fast TP building and solo Spirits Within. But in certain PT configurations, I feel that GS may be a means for better and faster xp.

It was just a rush dealing so much damage against IT+ monsters yet still doing my job. Only other time I can do 600+ damage to a monster is with a 300% spirits , which takes 2-3 battles to build up anyways. Doing a cumulative 400-1000 damage with Spin slash and Light finisher also guarantees I don't lose aggro from the subsequent 1k+ Firaga III MB.

Questions? Comments? Criticism? Bring it on

Well, I definitely need to get my GS skill caught up. I would like to try doing this too. I know in the skill up sessions my static does(EZ to T's) I do pretty nice damage for being underleveled in GS. Doing Penta/Starburst -> Power Slash and MB'ing Holy off my own finish is fun. I'd definitely miss the shield blocking though. I feel kind of like a NIN tank when I parry and shield block many attacks^^.

I also talked to a PLD on my server that recommened using GS sometimes too. They said that they've had parties request them to use GS instead of Sword + Shield.

Just for a guideline, here is where I skilled up GS (B skill):

      0-80 : Qufim
      80-100 : Crawler's Nest (I think Bees and workers?)
100-120 : East Altepa anticans (Decurio etc)
120-150 : Quicksand Caves (while helping friend camp Centurio and Praetor, on the way to Titan Cloister)
      150-180 : Kuftal/Boyahda Robber Crabs
      180-200 : Terrigan Robber Crabs
      200-210 : Upper Delkfutt Jotunns
210-217 : Upper Delkfutt Magic Pots (bring a Stunner or Silencer)
      217-225 : Boyahda Steelshells

0-100 you can easily solo. 100-150 it's nice and faster to team up with a mage (I was with RDM, no downtime with refresh and faster skillups with haste. BRD would work nicely as well). 150+ need PTs, generally with at least 1 healer and 1 refresher. You can potentially get all the way to 240's on Steelshells as well.

You can do the same for staff as well, although it's slightly easier since Staff is A- skill.

I recommend you get a Federation Sword for skilling up GS and Earth Staff for skilling up staff... these have the lowest delay for their respective weapon types along with low damage. Use Defender to deal even less damage... don't worry, you still gain skills if you hit for 0.

Thanks for the suggested locations Rugal. I'm currently at 133 GS. My static likes to do skill ups together(so our exp doesn't differ too much). The WHM and RDM are trying to get their CLub and Sword caught up, so we genrally have to take sligtly higher mobs.

We though about Quicksand Caves last night, but we weren't sure what or where to fight. Anticans seemed to troublesome with the possibility of AE silence, and we had no idea where to find Sand Lizards.

Go to the NE entrance of Quicksand Caves in East Altepa desert (near Koroloka Tunnel zone, this is where many PT's xp).

Keep walking until you get to the big room with Anticans. Sneak your party and keep going through, and drop down to the bottom ledge. Keep going straight into the tunnel. You can pull into this tunnel if your PT isn't high enough to avoid aggro (around 67 or 68). This is also the room where Antican Centurio spawns (drops Shaman Cloak, Quake, Stonega III, among other things). I skilled B weapon here to 150 or a bit more, so it's a good place for your skill. Spiders and Worms also available here (around same level as the ants, although worms are slightly lower level). If you're real worried about AE silence, just buy your whm a stack of echo drops.. but they really only do it when they're close to dying, so you can just kill it then rest up in my experience.

Spinnging Slash is really over powered. I haven't had a chance to use GS in a XP party, if it works, it works. I just wouldnt suggest using GS on mobs that cast spells. UNLESS you have a macro setup to switch to shield quickly and Shield Bash and switch back to GS, but in result TP will be lost.

Spinning Slash is one of the best WS in the game, so don't over look it because you're a PLD. Another thing I wouldn't mind trying is PLD/WHM against bone with Club Skill maxed. Stoneskin, Equip all attack gear --> Hexastrike + 1.5x dmg. Wonder how that would work.

Akimatu, was thinking of trying that too :D
Already got the only important WS's for PLD secondary weapons (Spirit Taker, Spinning Slash, and crappy Energy Steal/Drain and .... pentathrust ; so I guess club is next on my to-do list. Of course, I'd rather skill it up with a Kraken but that's more of a pipe dream than anything else

that thing about Hexastrike would be pretty awesome, it's just too bad neither PLD, nor any other job aside from WHM can learn Hexastrike.
                  PLD 55 DRG 34 WAR 33 THF 60 NIN 21 RNG 34 SAM 10 MNK 18 WHM 32 BLM 25 DRK 4 all jobs unlocked, all others level 1

Are you sure you can't? People have told me that SP skills just need that job as subjob... not as main. I'm not positive because no one has ever fully confirmed.

The website that said SP skills can only be used by SP job main may be incorrect.

Im sure as long as you sub /WHM you can use Hexastrike. It wouldn't sound right that Club is a A rated weapon and you dont get most of the weapon skills. Same case for RDM/WAR, can only use Vorpal Blade with /WAR sub.

Aside from everything else you would either have to have BRD for all the Acc+ and good Acc gear. Hexastrike + Bone, I'd really like to see that.

imac2much, If you have THF leveled at all use GS with Sneak attack while farming and be surprised how much dmg you can get out of it. ^^ I still have Staff / Club to skill up. Used to be a DRG so Penta Thrust isnt an Issure.

Ah, I do have 25 THF.. I will try out PLD/THF today... I wonder if I can break the 1k damage barrier? I never have with Vorpal or Swift :\

Monkor that was the website I was referring to. I originally trusted it 100% but some people said that SP skills can also be used with SP job as sub... or maybe it's just in the case with PLD. I will ask some PLD pals later who might have club skill leveled, unless someone else here can answer. Oh come on Bruce, I know you have capped club skill with that durn kraken club :p Do you have Hexa with /WHM?
