My mistake. I think the reason some of my friends thought differently was because of Mystery Tour (I believe it says you can use it with WHM sub).

I learned hexa a long time ago ;;
Too bad I can't use it ><
Yah at 70+ you can get pretty funky in terms of what you use. Especially 73+ when exp mobs really start hitting for crap. Should see what a staff does on skellies with retribution. O_OScrew this game.

Is retribution more like Ground Strike/Spiral Hell/Savage Blade... only doing good damage at 300%? My staff skill is 222... easy to skill up since whenever I tank NMs with Earth Staff I get a few points...
Gonna suck getting the WS points for it with no possible lvl 3 skillchain >_<
Just tried Great Sword again last night... this time PT config was:
PLD, WAR, BLM, RDM, WHM, BRD
Actually, we had a THF instead of BRD at first, fighting tigers and cockatrices in Kuftal. I used traditional 1hs+shield here, and the other 2 skillchain'ed mistral axe > shark bite.
However, once the THF left we had the funky notion of replacing him with a BRD. Too little firepower with just PLD and WAR at the frontlines? Not at all... since due to Refresh+2 ballads and 4 potential healers there was absolutely no problem with me using GS. We tinkered around with either Full Break > Swift using Madrigal+minuet and then tried Mistral Axe > Spinning Slash using 2 Madrigals (since GS is pld B weapon)... the latter clearly won. Espadon is so weak it makes me cry. Full Break > Swift Blade > Darkness generally does 250+150+50 damage, whereas Mistral Axe > Spinning Slash > Light does 450+350+150 damage, after which BLM can burst with Firaga III for some more loving. If I was fighting VT's where I wouldn't need 2 Madrigals I'd be doing even more damage, but oh well. Suffice to say, GS worked, and everyone had a blast (at times the mages would come up and smack it with hexa strike for fun). We still managed chain4's and the occasional chain5 for 230ish xp so I don't think we were too gimped really.
Oh and I did use PLD/THF to help my friend with the Hornetneedle quest. Built TP to 300% before ending skillchain on the NM with sneak+spinslash... 1210 damage spinslash + 1210 damage light = dead Death from Above.
Hope this information is interesting to someone... in most cases PLD should be the tank soaking up all the damage, but when needed, we can be a decent DD as well! (as long as you do your main job.. don't let anyone else get hit
)
I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

Ah, I suppose PLD's get the shaft on Hexastrike. Just assumed that they should get it. Oh well, can't win them all. Its nice to hear success story with GS in XP party.
Are you using Espadon or +1 iMac? When I was leveling in Ranps Tomb with a Brd for Atk+ I would switch between Meat Mithkabobs and Boiled Crab just to test things out. On average I was hitting for 40-60 and 50-70 with berserk (Amemet Mantle, Assault Earring). Of course this is Vs. Undead so PLD's get a little bit of an advantage, but it was nice doing good Damage against IT mobs.
Highest DMG Spinning I manage was 1185 @ 300% TP. I know that type of damage will never happen in a XP party, but hey... Its nice showing off while farming around. :p

PLD/THF
works semi-ok as a DRK/THF replacement.
My LS has had a few go at it, when they couldn't find a DRK/THF (namely me, I'm 75, not in the mood for partying much any more).
So they would pick up one of the quite few of the PLD's in the LS and make him sub /THF. Their report was that PLD/THF still do good damage. This is mainly because the spinning slash damage is only roughly 1/2 based on the user's attacking power (some weapon skills are mostly STR/ATT based), the other 1/2 is TP based. Being TP% has a large determination on the damage output means a PLD/THF doing SATA spinningslash will still do 800 on 100% TP, only about 200 ish weaker than DRK/THF. And nobody is going to complain about 800 damage + 800 light. :D
So PLD/THF can be a DRK/THF replacement in a pinch after 69. The main thing is that the PLD better be rich enough to afford another set of +ACC/ATT gear, because I'm not lending you my gear if you are not in my LS.

At 100TP, retribution is the strongest WS for staff. But at 300TP, full swing is the most powerful. I have beaten a thf SATA shark bite before with full swing, both 300TP. I did 1100, she did 1000. =P
Anyway GS in exp party is no no. Whenever I try to hit VT+ mob with spining slash, I usually miss unless I have a bard.

Hm.. that sounds really sweet! I like trying new things out... I doubt random PT's would be up for that, but maybe if I make a PT with some friends just to try it out... haha PLD/THF could still probably be a better DD than most if they have good gear (Haubergeon, 2 Snipers, Amemit+1, merman+assault earrings?). Very intriguing.
Akimatu, I use a stupid dinky Espadon. Espadon+1's don't really sell on AH in Midgardsormr... well a few have sold at 1.2mil, which I honestly don't think it's worth. I dropped 350k funding my lvl 100 alchemist friend to make one.. he did over 40 attempts on new moon, desynthin every Espadon he made for more ingredients, and still no HQ. Now that I have Joyeuse and can almost wear it, I 've given up making the stupid Espadon+1.
Oh I agree that you shouldn't use GS without BRD. I never use it unless I have a BRD. However, with a BRD, after 3+ hours of using GS in pt, I missed ONE spinning slash. Don't see much wrong with that.Originally posted by freebird

(1) My LS PTs that employed a PLD/THF in my place is 73-75. At those leveles, accuracy is much less of an issue as everything con VT.
(2) I lent them most of my gear, so the PLD can load up on ACC and ATT. he couldn't wear my Hauberk, but he had Assult Jenkin. So I assume that the PLD had no less than 30+ acc on him.
Being that PLD GS skill is about 15-20 levels behind a DRK, you'll need those extra ACC or else you'll be missing too often and gaining TP too slowly.
So PLD/THF probably will work best at very high levels 73+, with lots of +Acc gear, and a BRD to help jacking up his ACC. The damage isn't really the main issue for a PLD/THF, SA+spinningslash will always land 100% and do good damage, it's the normal swing accuracy and TP gain rate that PLD/THF has to worry about.

Word of warning with Joyeuse, it functions like a piercing weapon as far as resistant types go. Its questionable using in an exp pt vs bone. You get the extra attack, but when you're only hitting for 50% of a 35dmg weapon. On the attack rounds that both swings connect you break even, on the rounds where the effect doesn't fire or you miss one... You'll still gain extra TP and hate will be easier to hold with it tho.

Strange, why is Joyeuse considered piercing? I thought all swords were slashing type damage or whatever? Is this a hidden property just like that one spear that has hand-to-hand property?
Or is it because Joyeuse is considered a rapier, like many other swords RDM generally use? As a PLD I've never used the rapier type low dmg low delay weapons so maybe that's the case...I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

There's a spear with blugeoning type damage? Which spear is this?Is this a hidden property just like that one spear that has hand-to-hand property?
If Joyeuse is piercing, then it's all the better for my static party. Having a DRG and THF, we prefer piercing weak mobs. Having a piercing type attack myself would allow me to do more damage as well.
Be like a Paladin.
Take the hit, shrug it off, and ask if their mom hits any harder.

lv 70 weapon, only DRG can use
d84, delay 478
Get it from BCNM Chamber of Oracles (Lachesis Orb)
Hidden effect: Blunt damage (hand-to-hand)
