Giving up casting stats for defense/hitpoints is usually a dumb move in player vs computer situations. In PvP settings (note: never tried Ballista, mostly refering to my experience in DAoC) it's not such a bad idea.

How good of a BLM can an Elvaan make?

if you got aggro, and KB triple attacked you, and you were wearing as much -hp +mp gear as you probably do, I highly doubt you would live very much longer than a taru would've. You'd have an estimated ~100-200 more hp than a taru...and considering that Fafnir (a considerably easier mob than KB) hits me for 300+ per hit (and maat hits me for damn near 300 per hit), you live an extra .5 attacks. Congratulations. You win, my friend, you win. Not that the amount of time I was able to save my pt because I had mp left ever mattered or anything, or the amount of times I was able to make chain 5 because I could compensate for shitty melee's and still have MP left over for end chains. For The Horde!!
Current Gil total spent on gear:
3,235,000
Current Gil Value of gear:
1,151,000

It really doesn't matter, like most other jobs, its up to player skill. I've seen some lvl 75 Galka BLMs in action on my server kicking ass and some taru BLMs missing MBs repeatedly. Its up to the player.
What does make a practical difference for an Elvaan BLM compared to a Taru one is:
1. You will get less invites than BLMs of any other race except Galka. And its not just a little less, its significantly less.
2. You will need to invest more money than Tarus on INT+ and MP equipment, but more importantly, those things take up valuable inventory space.
Other than that, that extra 100 dmg or surviving for 1.5 secs longer is not going to save the world.
The logical race for a BLM is obviously taru – they are designed to be mages, much as Elvaans are designed to be melees. But if you don't like the way tarus look or for whatever reason, just choose the race that you do like. Its just a game.

player before race...best BLM I ever saw was a Elvaan who did just as much as any Taru I ever would, but could conserve her MP perfectly...constant chain 5's and she pretty much always had over 200 MP...best WHM I've ever seen was Elvaan also...lol >.>;Most memorable WoW vent convos on Burning Legion:

well, i have never said that elvaan could not make good black mages. i have actually said that they could.
the point i am trying to make, is that if a "good elvaan black mage" were a taru instead, they would be even better. in your example about the best blm you have seen, if they were taru, you would have still been getting chain 5's, but the blm would not need to hold back as much to conserve mp, thus the chains would have been even faster.
I am just making an effort to keep people from being mis-informed. The Taru race was DESIGNED to be the best for black mages, it's not that complicated of an idea. No Taru warrior would be as good as a Elvaan warrior with equal skill, i'm sure you would all agree to that, yet you insist that elvaan stats can match taru's for a black mage.... the reasoning does not make sense to me.
Once again... I have stated multiple times... Elvaan can definantly make good mages... but they cannot compete with taru of equal skill.

Best WAR I've seen: Hume, no real comments though
Best MNK I've seen: Elvaan with some really pimped gear o.o Scorp Harness, XCounters, Peacock Charm, ect ect...
best THF i've seen: Elvaan, I don't care if people say they suck at it, he's pimping out +49 attack w/ +24 DEX and +20 AGI, it's rediculious @.@; What a Mithra with standard THF gear hits for 600 a Dancing Edge (basic dmg), he nails for 1k+...@.@; btw, he has a Peacock Charm too...
best RDM I've ever seen: a Galka, no real gear prefrences, just good at it
best WHM I've ever seen: now it's a Hume
best BLM: that Elvaan I met that one pick up pt...
best PLD: a Taru, I love Taru PLD's they all rock
best DRK: well since I'm a DRK I can't really say anything here, skip
best RNG: a Hume
best BST: ...never pted with one
best SMN: Mithra
best BRD: a Taru
best SAM: Galka
best DRG: an Elvaan
best NIN: Mithra
I'm NOT saying these are the best jobs for each job, but player skill wise, THESE are the races of the people that I met that were the best I'd ever pted with down the road. I'm NOT saying Elvaans are the best at everything, but every race is a GOOD CHOICE for everything ._.' This game is very flexible on job/race, and as long as you can do your job well and have the best gear you can get, you'll do fine...Most memorable WoW vent convos on Burning Legion:
