You got your "lines" to win HL items in most linkshells; very socialist concept and it benefits a good amount of players, though is super slow. And in some you've got your "only the president and his buddies and anyone who has made him happy today, will get drops" linkshells; very capitolist, but only a few gain and the rest suffer and are required for their back breaking work to get that elite few to the top; but it results in instant-gratification for that select few.
If you ask me, Squeenix didn't really take personal player politics into consideration outside of the Japanese mentality. In JP, the community oriented and socialist mentality prevades. But what can you do? Balance out the two sections of politics in the game? Is there really a happy medium. I dunno...
I think that when people play a game they need to consider that it's "not just a game" all the time. If you're going to play a game and be competitive, you need to have a competitive mentality. But eh, people stand by their "I paid my 12.95 I can do whatever the fk I want mantra" like it's a GD bill of rights lol.

Really, I see people stuck on particular job for some events, but no one with multiple jobs I know of stuck on only one for all events. Heck, in my Sky LS, I never know what anyone is bringing except the leader--WHM, since we're short on that job. And, this one player who's usually BRD, since he hates to bring melee job to Sky.
Can I say your experience is more of the exception? lol. Obviously, to not exaggerate myself, I should say you exaggerated, and not every BRD player is stuck on BRD all the time.

I said it's a cultural norm; in Japan, it's natural in real life to address a flower shop owner as "flower shop (person)", or a sushi chef as a "sushi shop (person)". The same goes for "section chef" and other titles within the workplace. It's not rude in the least bit, even amongst people who have known each other for years. (Not using the titles would be rude, though, depending on the situation and relationship.)
Look past your own (cultural) bias to interpret not using name is rude and is meant to demean someone. (How much experience do you have with foreigners anyway? lol.)

Re: Over 9000... er... ok, Over level 75 - New cap 99 o.o
The job thing is already pretty much in effect in endgame shells. Not for things such as meripo or Nyzul or what have you, but if I were to log into my linkshell and find that Faf window was open, I wasn't just coming any fucking job willy-nilly, I was coming whatever job the leadership told me to. I only got to choose what job I wanted to play on my off time, or on the off chance I was one of the first people heading to the Aery. Even then, I'd still be on the job most needed (WHM) because if there was less than four of us, we needed a holding party and BLM just wouldn't cut it.
Of course, endgame shells are not a democracy and they're not Burger King. You do what you're told, go where you're told, and play what job you're told. But on my free time? Fuck yeah I'm playing what I want to play.
The devs weren't paying me to come in and play. My linkshell was, in a way (when you think about points and items and gil payouts, etc. RL money, okay, no). But you talked about the game as being a job ... fuck that. When they pay me, I'll let them restrict what I play and when. The closest I got to that was the gear I got from my ls, and I played what was needed when I was on LS time. Just like when I clock in at work I do what they tell me to, but when I get home, fuck yeah I am going to put on sweats and crack open a damn beer in front of the TV and the computer.
Trying to balance the number of people on each job - making it even somehow, or whatever - it's just never going to happen. If I wanted to play the kind of game where I would always have a tank, a healer, a support/buffer, and 3 DDs, well, I'd play something offline, because then I'd be assured that I'd have those things. But part of the fun of XI was maybe finding some unconventional ways to do things when what you need isn't available. One of my best memories was a late night Khimaira that popped, and both the WHMs that were there had fallen asleep and we couldn't manage to wake them up. I was on BLM, along with three others on BLM, and we spam Cure 3'd the PLD until he got it under control, (had some close calls) and then I warped and came back on WHM. You know what? We managed, and hell that was the most fun Khim I ever played because of the way we had to work around what we had. It's a slightly different situation than what's described, but you get the idea. It's not as fun when everything is cookie cutter.
Except for merits. Then ... fuck yes, 2 BRDs, RDM, and 3 DDs, let's go destroy some Mamools.

The point is that is a game, why should we force people into roles when the whole point is the be any of the 20 jobs you want to be? I come here to have fun, not to do charity work.
Sometimes helping others can be fun for me, but its not really helping others if I am forced to do it. I'll choose to help those that I feel I can help and I often do, but I'm not obligated to help anyone. If I'm not obligated and I choose to help, my desire to help is genuine.Last edited by Omgwtfbbqkitten; 03-05-2010, 12:10 PM.

Socialism is the mentality that everything should be even at the expense of those that are successful, it dovetails neatly into communism, but its not exactly the same thing. Socialism turns everyone into a number and allocates resources based on who the the government thinks is more important. That's why socialism is a terrible system.
Communism is taking it a step further. Government instead decides your role in society based off your talents rather than letting the individual decide what is right for themselves. The second the government finds someone better, you lose your prestige and get tucked away and some neat little corner if they can afford to give you at least that much.
If SE forces you to be a particular job in order to maintain fairness and balance, that's a socialist approach. Your role and value is based on the needs of the populace.
A communist system would have SE deciding my role based on which role I played the best by level 30 and then locking me into that role for my entire career.
A capitalist system - which is what we have - allows the player to compete and thrive based of what they determine their own talents to be, in addition to facing supply/demand for said talent. The populace and SE do not decide his role and talents for him. If they're not talented and fail to gain recognition, then they don't succeed. You re-evaluate and try to find where you can succeed and what your talents really are.
None of them are perfect systems, but I know which one offers the most freedom. I'll pick my roles, thanks.
Why am I not surprised? That was probably put in by idiots who, like most Americans, don't have a clue what socialism is. Yeah, that's right America you have socialist institutions. Wake the fuck up and read a book or visit another country sometime. Unless you want to abolish taxes altogether (on that note, Taxes didn't even exist in the U.S. until WW1) and have every kind of public service like roads and education to even the military run by corporations. Yeah, there's a lovely thought.
An all capitalist society would be akin to anarchy if you think about it. No regulations, no govt. programs to help people, it's basically the law of the jungle - the strong will survive and the weak will perish. And while that certainly works for some, human decency demands otherwise. Conversely an all socialist state would be stagnant and filled with civil unrest. The govt. really doesn't have the level of authority you think it does in socialism BBQ (not even in communist China, though they are damn close to a dictatorship), but it does determine a good amount of things for the perceived benefit of the whole. You'd still be free to pick your own careers/doctors etc (contrary to what the far right would have you believe in the U.S.) but the govt would be able to set limits on how many of X kind of corporations can operate etc etc... it's all rather complex.

Re: Over 9000... er... ok, Over level 75 - New cap 99 o.o
And I stand by my socialist view of game mechanics. I don't view video games as a hobby. It's my job. Squeenix called our classes "Jobs." It's a "Job System." That means you have to fkn work and do your job FOR THE GROUP. This isn't about "oh I want to have freedom to do whatever I want and get higher and better than everyone else so everyone else can suck it." This is a cooperative focused game mechanic. You got to do your job or YOUR xp suffers, not just your groups. It's the every man for himself mentality that drives people away from the game. Point in reference: End Game. lol
I clock in at 7:30pm and clock out at 3 in the morning. I get paid for my services in more ways than one; in personal rewards and satisfactions of knowing my accomplishments. The pixel crack doesn't hurt either. If I have to carry everyone's lazy asses around all evening and heal them, escort them thru zones, cast sneak every fkn two seconds and orgainze the party, gather all the info on how to complete the mission, make sure no one gets to yellow or is poisoned or crap because they scream at you like world peace is coming to an end..... (basically babysit)
... then by god you better bow down before my WHM might and let me bitch at you for brining less than your A-game. I'm the mutha fukn squad leader, not your carebear stare my lil pwny friend! Who in the hell brings their c-game to an a-game party? I'll tell you who, that runt bastard that use to play Tekken 3 at the arcade and always picked Eddie, spamming the control around in a 360 motion, whacking on buttons. That's the person I threw my fkn hot dog at the back of their head and watched them cry because they got demoralized.
Since I have to play my job in a socliast manner, the rest of you grunts can just do it too!
Wow, I sound like a real party nazi.... lmao.
