Exactly, there are still some huge technical issues with it that need to be ironed out. As usual though, SE sticks their head in the sand and doesn't look into it right away like they should.

I didn't know about those problems, I only notice lag when switching when I'm doing too much in the background (vids and stuff) and I always thought it was just my crappy com being crappy (which is very well could be)

This reminds me of the neverending supply of Maat jokes we have in my linkshell.

It was originally 10 when the game was released iirc but this caused problems with the AH servers and things crashed, items were lost and LOTS of people were pissed. I'd rather they keep it at 7 if it means I won't lose out on my stuff I have for sale.

    I lol'd cause it's true.

What's wrong with SE's windower? It does exactly what I want a windower to do, it windows the game.

As for the reason so many of these changes are happening now rather then over the past 4-5 years is, because by SE's own admission, they've had the game planned out in advance for a good 4-5 years. From the start of the game to the end of ToAU they seemed to have a basic idea for what they were going to add and what they were going to focus on. And all throughout ToAU they said repeatedly that they would finally go back and "fix" all the problems with the game once the current expansion was finished. And as soon as ToAU was done, they come out with a curveball of an expansion followed by repeated curveball updates that focus more on the entirety of the game as opposed to just the specific expansion, which was something that was pretty much new.

In otherwords, fixing the small (or big) problems with the game just wasn't on the schedule, now that the schedule is cleared, they can work on all areas of the game and try some new things.

I kind of agree with SE's reasoning in placing them in Selbina - the world now has Middle Lands x2 and there were viable places to EXP added that are not Valkurm, Qufim and Yuthunga Jungle. People may not actively use these areas as much as SE might have hoped, but the ability to get to these places more quickly is an asset nonetheless.

They were uneccessary in earlier days, they wanted people to travel from the nations, learn the ropes. There weren't too many comprable areas to go EXP. There were a couple, but not as many as there are now. The "starter" WotG areas all host mobs the level of those you'd find in La Theine, Tahrongi, Konachat through Valkrum. Heck, some of it goes 40/50+ in places, like East Ronfare (S). Not popular spots, but still viable.

With Windower, SE could never hope to live up to the expectations of those spoiled on Windower plug-ins. There are all sorts of features people would want included (some of them flat-out gamebreaking), no matter how you cut that one, people would be disappointed.

Also, you have to keep in mind, SE's business philosophy is undergoing a big change. In some respects, I think they're just worrying too much about how they appeal to the western market. They lost respect from us mainly because they catered too damn much to the Japanese market and it showed.

In many ways, FFXI has been a major contributor of that particular criticism. The reaction to CoP being released a week ahead of the US players was plain volitile. I didn't think it was a huge deal, but SE has made sure to make FFXI releases worldwide ones since then.

They've had to expand thier GM service to include more GMs handling western players with western languages. This was because Japanese GMs favored Japanese players far too often.

Shit, Elmer the Pointy's own blog's title is thumbing its nose as SE with the "JP Button" bit. Its a bit crude in terms of humor but not entirely inaccurate, either. GM favortism, FF International/KH Final Mix and things like not releasing OSTs to the US market when companies like Altus actively were. These are departments SE feels ass-backwards in. Even their localization turnaround times feel lacking in contrast to the likes of Atlus.

US players thought Vaan was too girly-looking, so they soak The Last Remnant in testosterone. This is probably where I'd say they started going to far. I'd still like my characters a little more grown up, but perhaps more in terms of Basch, Balthier and Auron than some bulky dude in heavy armor with long hair. I know the japanese girls like thier boys looking like androgenous 80s rock stars, but its time to see the bigger picture. Jumping from one rock cliche to another isn't really what we mean by a "manly" character.

SE, like so many other things in this world right now, is entering a transition phase. A little overreaction can be considered part of it, but I don't think any additions made to the intermediate parts of FFXI in the last few months have been an overreaction, but rather, a fair series of refinements.

Talk all you want about how it should have been four years ago, but what you wanted then and what's been added likely aren't the same things.

I think SE needs to be taking notes on Atlus, honesly. I gush about SMT games a lot, but its not without reason. They bring mature titles, not just in the M Rating sense. They're not ashamed of the games being Japanese, they've learned Americans actually like the injection of Japanese culture in Japanese settings as much as possible. They got backlash over the first two Persona games being too Americanized.

When MS initially tried to enter the market in Japan, they made the same mistake with Halo. The Japanese gamers that want American games want them to be American games, not watered down Japanafied versions. They don't want the marines and Covenant acting like samurais and ninjas, they want them as marines and genocidal aliens.

What SE needs to learn is that they've done nothing wrong in characters or gameplay so much as they've favored the smaller portion of the market while giving the larger portion sloppy seconds because they thought we wouldn't understand or appreciate what Japanese gamers do. Its not in our interests to have their heros be suited to our tastes so much as it is to stop making digital teen idols for japanese girls.

There's a difference between easier and stupider.

Easier transportation to dunes? Sure, why not.

Nomad Moogles in Selbina and Mhaura? WHAT THE HELL. THE ENTIRE POINT OF NOMAD MOOGLES ARE TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO ADVENTURERS IN THE OUTLANDS.

    THOSE ARE NOT OUTLANDS.
