  • What is a good "TANK" to you?

Being a warrior main, I've been in many situations where I have tanked.

Here is my "rules" that I play by.

I like to have one main tank that ALL the hate gets thrown on.

I am lvl 27, I have full chain mail, neckchopper (+5 acc)
I usually use defender + fish mithkabob which gives me over 200 defense with protect I. This is a lot more than any other players my level that I have grouped with.

when i tank I provoke it off the puller, then turn around the mob so that the thieves are facing the backside of it. If it has an AOE i make sure I am far away enough from the mages, and also not in a spot where AGGRO can spawn and link to us.

I hit my voke macro every 30 seconds.

    /p [JA: (|Provoke|)] [Target: <t>]
    /ja "Provoke" <t>
    /wait 15
    /p "(|Provoke|) in 15sec .... TP: <tp>
    /wait 15
    /echo Provoke Ready.

My evasion is maxed, my parry is level 40 something.

White mages have cast cure III in mid-late battle, Curaga, etc. and have not pulled aggro from me.

Other warriors have Provoked and not pulled aggro from me.

This is how I think it should be. Can't wait till i get my Paladin quest, then my defense will REALLY rock. (Plus cure for more hate)

You sound like you want to be praised for doing your job correctly.

But more power to you, it's rough finding a good tank.

if it sounds like im tooting my own horn, its not my intention.

I'm just trying to set a good example.

      I also suck at WHM..

haha.. that's why i think my "playstyle" would suit a paladin better.

thats really a big part of what u should play, what fits your "style" and what is fun for you.

      yeah, and like you said, it is hard to find tanks who know whats going on ; ;

Voking every 30 seconds is a waste IMO. You should only be voking at the beggining of the match and if the mob heads towards the mages. Also situations like another tank-type/hybrid receives aggro and cant handle it (ie. using Souleater as a DRK).

          ^^^ Interesting point of view.

From my understanding, Hate is a meter that is ongoing. So when I provoke every 30 seconds, it takes a lot for a mob to "chase" someone else. They'd have to do some uber attack or uber cure.

I party alot of a thf friend of mine who does around 250+150 damage with his boost+sneak attk+combo -> fusion and he still doesn't pull aggro from me.

Why do you think that Provoke should be held until the mob chases someone else? I'd like to hear your point of view.

Main tank should be provoking every 30 seconds while secondary tank should be provoking when monster goes for mages or to set up a Fuidama for the thf.

Main tank should be provoking every 30 seconds. And eating foods, and using defender (or curing if PLD); hate control is important.

Oh yeah, by far the best Tank i've played with in the 20-30 range was a Ninja/War with Utsusemi.

                Its insane.. expensive tho.

Funny how a DRK is telling you that you dont need to provoke. Out of all the people here, he should be the one telling you to provoke more!

Your description is my idea of a very good tank. *nod* Seems like you're doing a good job indeed.

I'd have killed to have a tank like that in my pt today. ^.^ But I suppose you can't expect too much from lv10-12s in Valkurm without subjob. I was leveling my subjob (BLM).

Had to teach them to stay back from the mages because of AoE attacks, before that they would pull the mob directly on us..

                    Some of them knew the concept of renkeis and tried to teach it to the others, although they never got one going. Provoke was always about half a minute late. They're learning though, I have faith. xD;

Yes, the EXP sucked, but I gained two levels anyway.. and I figure they gained some experience.

I agree with provoking every 30 seconds I do it, and it keeps the mob right where it needs to be, hate is an ongoing battle, and the tank has to win that battle at all costs, or the party will fail. I never tried Fishkabobs but I will not if they raise my defense, and yes Defender kicks ass, I love that skill as a tank!

A good tank will never let anyone beside him have the monster attention. He will also have the best armor for his level at all time. He has to use defender and his healing . I can't stress enough with this one: if your a PLD, heal yourself for godsake. I can't stand seeing a paladin with full MP after a fight, it makes me mad..

When Im playing with my WHM, I know a tank is good at what he's doing when no one but him ever get attacked.

Fish Mirthakabobs i think give +26.7% defense.

Boiled crab is good too, 21.6% defense i think.

As a pally you can also use melon juice, so that you dont have to sit to regen mana.

Seems like most everything I can see a good tank doing is pointed out here. But, just to state the obvious, please do not follow the mob if you lose aggro, provoke from where you are or cure yourself from where you are. Mages readjusting for aes = not casting spells.

The only time i run after a mob is if no other party members have provoke active, and once i have provoke, i voke it and move away from the mages.
