Hacks on FFXI

OK Me and my friend were talking, and he doesnt play FFXI but I talk about it anyways(Its fun to talk about stuff other people dont understand, and he thinks its cool and wishes got beta anyhow.) I tell him theirs absolutely no way you can hack easily, and that if you do you will get caught. Can any importers tell me if this is the case? I highly doubt anybody could hack for a period of more then an hour without being caught.

Well i'm an importer myself and I heard you *can't* hack on FFXI mainly onto your characters since they are stored on the servers of the game. You would have to spend alot of time and effort to try to figure out a way to hack into the game.

however, japanese players have been able to hack into the game and where able to view some high level items and such, not to mention the hack where someone replaced the moogle inside the moogle house with summons and stuff..... (correct me if im wrong) :p

those are mere photoshops and picture edits...
not the result of hacking...

the only successful hacking I know of is the hacking of the maps...
there's a utility somewhere that will let you view all the maps picture files in the game...
not truly hacking...
just a well written parsing of the right file, since the maps are saved locally...

hmm...according to one of the moderators those were actual hacks....along with the japanese guy hacking into the game files viewing advanced weapons and such.

Well that doesn't matter if someone is viewing high level weapons and it to me doesn't sound like hacking.

Well if this game was ONLY on consoles then yes it would be IMPOSSIBLE to hack. This is not the case with FFXI, you have access to a lot of hacking tools on a PC and it's easy to hack as long as you have time, skill and patience. All online mmorpgs can be hacked by alterning packets sent to the server. For instance lets say you pickup $100. You find out which packet it was that was sent to the server, alterit to be $100000000 and resend it. This can be easily done was long as you know what your doing.

Now the newest mmorpg's have all the packets encrypted, smart move, so it is pretty IMPOSSIBLE to decode it yourself. This would require more work then most people would want to do. So basicly people just don't try because it's too hard, great security system . Now FFXI is going to be a HUGE game with MANY players so there is a higher chance of the game being hacked but Square got that covered. From what I read Square spend a lot of time making sure this game is hack proof and to maintain it that way with updates. They are actually able to catch you, and if they do you'll be banned. Probably warn you first.

FFXI will probably be the most anti-hack proof mmo out there. The game will be very popular, so hopefully some of the money square will be getting will go to support hehe.

Console-only wouldn't save ffxi from packet sniffing.

I actually would like to be able to have a looksee at all the maps in-game...but since most maps have to be bought, that would essentially be cheating. :D So never mind then.

I don't think hacking is as much a worry anymore as it used to be.

Yeah, whether a game is console only doesn't make a difference. The hacker can still use their PC to connect to the server information... Everything else Vulcan said is true.

Yeah and the thing about summons instead of moogle is an accully hack but it does no harm since all you can do is watch.
It's still the moogle only the hacker found the script for moogle model and switched his skin.

So if you talked to lets say shiva It would be the moogle which answered.

I think most of you understand even though I am an expert of making things complicated ^^

No, the model will have to be switched with the shiva model too along with the shiva skin or else it will look like a moogle with shiva's skin wrapped around him.

i just thought they were promo pics of upcoming stuff for the expansion done by square themselves. . . i mean it showed people in AF which hadn't been "released" and same goes for the summons.
