  • Free to play for SWTOR going live next month

    The F2P option for SWTOR has been unofficially confirmed to be going live in November (it was delayed for a month due to issues with the cash shop on the test server). The game has also had a massive price drop and you can buy the Digital Deluxe version for less than $15 and it still comes with the 30 day free trial. So for anyone still interested in trying out the game then now would be the time.

    There is an F2P option right now but it only goes to Lv15. I also have a ton of 7 day free trial invites left for anyone still interested in trying out the game and doesn't want to wait until November or pay $15 for the full version that will be free to play until the F2P option goes live.

    I'm not 100% sure what will happen to the price tag of the game itself (Bioware have been unclear as to if it will be just a no-sub option like with Age of Conan, or completely free to play like D&D Online) but if you actually bought the game you will get a bunch of free coins for the cash shop.

    I know that Cid is interested in the F2P bit due to his podcast but I'm just putting this out here for anyone else interested in at least trying the game or returning on the F2P option. My main characters are on The Progenitor EU (RP-PvE server) on the Empire side, playing a heal spec Sith Sorceress (think WHM/SCH for FFXI class comparison), and a Sith Marauder (think DD NIN/WAR for FFXI class comparison).

    I'm honestly a bit worried about this game; I was one of the crazies that dropped $150 for the collector's edition last Christmas (I'm a huge Star Wars fan). Since then, aside from the two founders of Bioware leaving--they've fired/lost so many of the creative minds that was part of the game's inception and last week Daniel Erickson left Bioware. He was the lead writer before being promoted to be lead designer for SWTOR.

    I'm not sure if you've recently logged onto SWTOR, but we've been reduced like, 5 or 7 servers on the US side and I have no idea how the EU side is doing. Still, once F2P drops I may hang out once in a while out of boredom.

      This seems appropriate somehow. <_<;

        They merged the servers pretty recently actually. Basically they upgraded the servers to take more players and just merged a load together so the population is actually in one place now instead of spread across a bunch of deserted servers. TBH they should have done the server mergers a LOT sooner but now all the servers are active, it's pretty fun since it's actually possible to do things now.

          I'll probably give it a try once it's f2p unless it requires me to install some nasty EA software like Origin.

            So basically, free to pay.

            DCUO really has one of the best models for FTP out there, I'm still rather amazed no one's following their example.

              Origin isn't required for it. If you can't find a retail version then you can more or less get it off Origin then immediately remove Origin entirely from your machine without any problem.
