I think EA Origin and CoD Elite are a waste of time, actually. I don't hate them, but that's a whole different position than saying I support either one; I think both are unnecessary fluff and offer neither a more streamlined experience nor particular value over the alternatives.

What I want is a happy medium where consumers can buy the software they want and have their purchase contribute to the people who make that software. Anything that promotes that makes me happy. Anything that takes away from that makes me unhappy. You don't see me railing against Steam, for instance, because on the whole they simplify the process of making a purchase, and the proceeds do go to the people who make the software. Origin doesn't horrify me the way it seems to do for you, but I don't see what the added value is to the consumer for the tradeoff of iincreased complexity of purchasing, which is why I don't support it.

The problem you seem to have is that you think developers are entitled to a cut from secondhand sales. What you fail to understand is that the used market is a large factor in driving the sale of new games.

But name me one industry outside of the video-game industry that has ever expected a cut from second-hand sales?

Anyway this is the difference between Steam and Origin so far:

      Steam:

      - Embraces the digital market in full
      - Respects the retail market, even lets them have sales for Valve games before they do a special sale
      - Treats the customer like a king.

      Origin:

      - Embraces the digital market... kind of.
      - Treats retailers as suspect, doesn't know what a sale is.
      - Treats customers like unwashed heathens

I'm not horrified by Origin, just puzzled by it and concerned they seem to be using it as the true test of Bioware's brand value. The Maddenites will always be there, there's no fixing them, though I have to wonder how many actually play on PC.

They're doing an exclusive version of ME3 on Origin, but a standard edition on Steam. They're also risking the whole of The Old Republic's distribution on Origin. That won't be on Steam at all, only in retail on and on Origin. Not that I'm remotely interested in playing it, it just seems foolish to create what you hope is a WoW contender and then sell it in one place rather than include Steam or Direct 2 Drive.

That game just strikes me as overkill anyway.

Personally, I'm fed up with Star Wars in general. The last few movies were all trite, there's been a bajillion books & games and other spin-offs... I mean shit how much more can you milk The Clone Wars?

The cartoon was pretty well done and season 3 was amazing I'll admit, but it just feels like Starwars overload to me. Besides, there's already been an MMO, and this one just looks like more KotoR but online.

At least FF has different settings & plots.

Oh yeah speaking of online stores, Blizzard has their own that they've been working on. Haven't checked it out yet though so I can't comment on it, and CoD Elite will probably do disgustingly well.
