    Re: The E3 2011 thread

    ?

AFAIK, the majority of the tales games are JP only, we've only had a few released here. Vesperia's the 1st game I've actually taken the time to buy (and even then I snagged it for $13 from my blockbuster that's closed down now) and play through. I've seen bits & pieces of Symphonia, haven't really touched the others.

Vesperia is pretty high quality stuff though, been a while since I've enjoyed an RPG this much so what's wrong with asking for more?

Hmm, it's looking like another fun rental at best to be perfectly honest, but we'll see.

<.< I still refuse to buy anything Capcom until they stop taking their fanbase for granted and ditch the bullshit gouging.

Woulda been nice if Bandai had a new Tales game for us too.

I didn't care for Symphonia all that much, but I'm loving the hell out of Vesperia (Yeah I know it came out years ago, but I just never got around to it until last week - snagged it for $13 along with FEAR 2)

Getting back to SE though, I'd love if if they could get their shit together and give us Grandia 4 - and not have it suck total ass like 3 did. 1 & 2 were both freaking amazing games.

Don't forget Heroes of Ruin by n-Space.

Its a fully featured Diablo/Dungeon Siege -style 3DS title. Online co-op, drop-in/drop-out, Streetpass and Spotpass functionality. Oh, and voice chat, too.

Speaking of which Dungeon Siege III is also looking good from what I played of the PS3 demo. Maybe one perk of SE being behind it is keeping Obsidian totally in-check where bugs are concerned. It was very polished... for an Obsidian game.

SE's western dealings may end up being what saves SE from far more than an embarassing showing at E3. SE better have some big guns ready for TGS. I was kinda ticked there was absolutely nothing on Dragon Quest X.

^ I was wondering where the fuck SE was at the show. All they had was XIII-2, oh yay...

At the very least, it would have been a prime opportunity to kick-start the PS3 campaign for FFXIV, if it were ready that is

According to this report, GameStop appears to be expecting PS Vita game prices to be around $40.

Also, Koji Taguchi (senior executive officer at S-E holdings) said that Eidos saved S-Es ass at E3 and was humiliated at the Japanese side of the company's showing. Which is totally understandable: no Versus, Type-0, any hint on XV, Dream Drop Distance, BbS: Volume 2, DQ X, new Dissidia DLC costumes and music*, the list goes on and on...
This isn't that much of a surprise. Square-Enix internal development is a train wreck. Final Fantasy XIV is a perfect example of just how broken the internal processes are.

*Just as an aside, Shantotto's 4th costume and the XI song package are available on the EU PSN.

Is too much to ask for another Mario game in the vein of Mario 64, rather than Galaxy? I like Galaxy, but it can be a little disorienting. Just give us a freaking HD remake of Super Mario Bros 3 on Wii-U already. I can just imagine how epic Giant world would be!
    Mario 3DS?

^ they'll get my vote if they do that. Capcom in particular needs a swift kick in the balls for witholding/charging exuberant amounts for content that should be inclusive.

SE has been slacking with their content for years though, and if FF13 is any evidence, using the prettier, high-end graphics etc in lieu of good story telling. It makes me sad that to this day, there are still SNES titles that far outclass a good chunk of the shit I've played on Wii, 360 and PS3.

I'll say it again, I'm beyond sick of the large majority of developers not using Blu Ray and PS3 to it's fullest. PS3 is capable of some pretty amazing shit that you just can't do on the other 2, but only a handful of games really showcase this like Uncharted, Heavy Rain & Valkyria. Incidentally, this is why I'll keep supporting Sony - their 1st party stuff is the absolute best in my eyes. Nintendo and MS both offer some cool stuff, but Sony's been really stepping it up and I'd like to see the other two bring their A game as well.

As for MS, I'm going to reserve judgment on Halo 4 for the time being. 343 has proven they can deliver the goods MP-wise with the Defiant Map Pack, but it remains to be seen how they handle the plot. I'm just glad Franky stayed behind with them. *sigh* if only Mike had stayed too.

    Re: The E3 2011 thread

I think its more the end that they could get away with a lot more bullshit on PS3 and 360 than Wii.

When gaming went HD, in many respects, games got smaller due to cost of developing assets and the returns were so small they looked desperately for ways to bring in additional revenue by boosting the price of games to $59.99 and cutting content that was considered standard n the past for additional sales.

When the "hardcore" market realized this was all getting a tad expensive, they veered more heavily to the used market and expected revenue form DLC ended up being smaller. So they cut more content, this time as "free DLC" for people that bought new.

More and more games got smaller. Nintendo's game's haven't really sacrificed scope and you know they'd get shit if they started offering Samus' Screw Attack as a pre-order bonus or some shit.

Just look at Call of Duty, though - their single player campaigns are a fucking joke. People can rag on Halo for not being "original" (whatever that means to those butthurt that their favorite FPS doesn't get recognized the same way ), but it has a campaign and it lasts. GTAIV is dramatically smaller than GTV San Andreas and when Bioware was pressed for time on DA2, that game's world got smaller. I've probably seen more in my first five hours of DA:O than I'll see in that game.

Some developers can bring the sense of scope, but more and more it seems the industry as a whole is looking for quick buck and looking at making cuts to their games just to see if you're dumb enough to bite.

I'm hoping Nintendo 3DS is a sign Nintendo will continue to trend away with this. I have no beef with a proper expansion to a game or map packs several months down the road, but all this sharding of content needs to stop and I hope Nintendo steps up and says no to the majority of it.

Eh you can't please everyone, but I would argue Nintendo really has been too casual-friendly with the Wii, because that market, as they discovered, is much more lucrative.
Are you sure it's Nintendo and not all the 3rd parties that refuse to associate with the Wii?

Nintendo's continued to do the same thing they've always done: release Mario (more Mario than the GameCube and 64 saw for that matter), Zelda, Metroid (which skipped the 64 altogether), Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Smash, Kirby, Donkey Kong, and Mario Kart games. Hell, they brought back Punch-Out and Wario Land.

I'm not going to say everyone should like the Wii, or Nintendo's games, but I see a lot of statements along the lines of "Nintendo's betrayed the hardcore gamers" and I'm just not seeing it. Did Nintendo tap into the casual market in addition to catering to their usual fans? Yes. But Microsoft and Sony (and in the past, Sega) also tapped into a market of their own - what I like to call "serious business" or "manly" games. Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, etc. Hyper-realistic, dark, gritty, gory games are what's all the rage now and no one wants to make that sort of game for the Wii.

That's my take on it at least.
