News Flash: PS3 was designed for other applications than home entertainment. I think it was MIT I saw the story on who are using the Cell to render complex 3D images of the human body for advanced medical studies. Might not of been them, but it was in Michigan >.>

I'm going to go with the standard "LoL @ the Civilan public" for using Military things outside of their intended purpose:

        Hook and loop fasteners (Velcro)
A network of computers robust enough to withstand a nuclear blast (the fucking internet)
A way to track military units through out the world (GPS)
Long term, non-persihable food (CAPRI FUCKING SUNS)
A way to transport troops around the globe quickly (AIRPLANEEEEEEEES)

I could go on, but I believe my point has been made.

Big difference between adapting technology to civilian use and applying a video game console to supercomputer applications.

For starters, it doesn't cost thousands of dollars to replace your network of velco fasteners.

You seem to be blinded by some bias there.

Velcro - "The hook-and-loop fastener was invented in 1941 by Swiss engineer, George de Mestral who lived in Commugny, Switzerland. The idea came to him one day after returning from a hunting trip with his dog in the Alps"

ARPANet - Joint civilian research project. The military had their use, the universities had theirs. We're using what grew out of the universities use right now.

GPS - Took three tries, but you got one, though it was a presidential mandate to open this up, so this is hardly 'outside of their intended purpose.' It positions things, it still does.

Long term, non-persihable food - I think NASA would like some of the credit your giving the grunts.

Airplane - You can't be that oblivious. Orville and Wilbur and the states of North Carolina and Ohio would like to have a word with you.

You gave 5, only one was a pure military project, one was a joint research project. Two (Airplane and 'Long term, non-persihable food') were created and developed by civilians before the military also used and extended their research and one the military was no where near when it was developed.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

Capri suns are fucking delicious. I will strike your nostrils with a karate chop.

This is somewhat/way off topic, but yeah I won't debate that drinking sugar water out of a bag 2-3 times a day isn't healthy (unless your logging 5-10+ miles running) I was more posting about the means of keeping that sugar water clean/usable/etc. It was the first example that popped into my head.

As far as child obesity, what's a yungun gonna do when their parents are lazy and don't promote a healthy life style /shrug

                Example:

Got a buddy in the army who's son (14yrs old) got caught shop lifting at the local BX (military version of wal-mart). Nothing major, just some piddly little thing that an older kid dared him to take.

Guy has to pay like 200 dollars in fines etc, and he has to punish his kid. He does this.

For every dollar I had to pay because you stole something when you knew not too, You owe me 2 mile.
                - You have to run/jog the miles
                - You have to do a minimum of 2 miles every day
                - You can do over 2 miles in a day, but the next day you still have to do 2 miles.

                That's 200 days of running (less as you'll see) 2 miles a day. 7 months round-a-bouts

At first the kid was like "THAT'S400MILES" "IHATEYOU!!" "I CAN'T DO THAT" "qq" "QQ" etc.

So he starts... dosen't speak to his day for the first week cause he's so mad (and I assume in pain) because of all the running and missing out on videogaming/tv watching. (His dad ran with him the first 4-5 times)

2nd week things start returning to normal, the running is now just a chore the kid has to do, like the dishes or taking out the trash...

3rd week the running is getting easier, and so the kid starts putting in a few days of doing 3 miles instead of 2.

                etc. etc.

So 2 months go buy, when I talked to his dad, he said he had like 40 miles left to go, he's lost 20lbs, girls are flirting with him/calling on the phone, he still plays his video games, and he's starting HS next year, and is going to run cross-country.

                TL;DR:
It's not the capri suns that make the kid fat, it's the enviroment that they live in, that allows them to become fat. If that makes sense.

---------- Post added at 07:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:29 AM ----------

oh wow, the entire point of my post was completly missed.

LOL @ the military because they used a video game console outside of it's intended purpose? That was my point, why laugh at the military for something like that, maybe I took the sentance out of context, or took it to personal, and if so I apologize, but I just didn't see any humor in it, and ya'll know I'm a pretty funnie guy.

And all those inventions that I mentioned might not have been "discovered" by the military, but do some more reasearch and tell me who provided the funding, time, focus to make these modern day conveniences a reality. Sure they might have taken off (airplane refrence, I am awesome) without the military getting involved, but who can say either way.

Now I would be one of the first to say something like "all I want my game system to do is play games" but I still defend the fact that if you advertise your system to do something, it better fucking do it. You don't remove it because of piss pore "survey results".
All the other things were removed in newer models. This is a case of removing an existing feature from an already sold product.

It would be like if a car company had radios that could take an iPod, then decided to stop putting that feature in the radios of their newer cars. Then a year later they remotely disable it in all the older cars too. Sure, most people listen to the radio, it's just those wierdos who use iPods, but most everyone listens to the radio anyhow. Oh, and the only radio stations it can receive are the ones authorized by the car company.

Oh sure you don't have to run the update, but you won't be able to play anything online, and won't be able to play new games. And if you send it in for service, don't be surprised if they "helpfully" upgrade you to the latest version of the firmware.

My bad, thought it was. It was some big university-type place, saw the story quite a while ago. Point is PS3 is used for a lot more than games, like finding a cure for cancer.

No the Cell, a processor created by IBM with some funding and a promise to buy from Sony, has many uses. The PS3 is designed, built and tested to play games and movies under consumer situations. Thats why IBM then turned around and put the Cell in real computers that were tested to have a 24/7 duty cycle.

Think of it this way. Early Macintoshes used the 68k family of Motorola processors. The Space Shuttle uses 68k family processors in several control systems. NASA did not slap a bunch of ThinMacs in the Shuttle and call it a day. There is a lot more to a computer then just the processor, and even then OtherOS never had full access to the hardware anyway.

Physically using PS3's was a headline grab. It was the university being an attention whore.

It's like a sickness. Haven't played in so long I'm dreaming about playing. Time to reactivate that old account.

then you should have read.... because if you had, you would have realized that this thread is about how the U.S. Air Force is angry at Sony for dropping the OS support on their systems...... next time read the OP fully please -.-

as much as I dislike Sony as of late, I will admit that the PS3 has some mighty processing power, and to link them all up like that to form a Super computer is a much cheaper and better idea then buying the expensive PC equivalent.

Cell is also designed in such a way that linking it up with other Cell devices can increase the processing power exponentially. Sony actually uses farms of PS3's to handle their complex rendering in movies like Spider Man 3.
