It's for the same reason as the guy who drives the giant raised-up truck: TINY genitals. I think they get one pixel or something. I know if all I had was an itty-bitty fuzzy cube, I'd probably want to hurt people with a 20ft. sword as well.

So THAT'S why everything I have is oversized! Ha! I never knew. I thought I just liked big things. *shrug*

Because they're compensating for something else.

Possibly. I think its for two reasons, impression (it establishes a distict image) and to make them seem more "manly". Its like Ichigo off Bleach, it represents power and that he is a "man". All the other soul reapers awe at the sheer length and width of his Zanpato (sp?). That's why all the girls want him afterall~

As for big huge weapons, not all of the characters have them. Basically just the main character.

Personally I think it's because it was too hard to render smaller weapons that looked like weapons on the older titles, so they went with oversized to make it painfully obvious what the characters were waving around.

P.S. If Cloud is compensating, what the heck do you call what Sephiroth is doing? His katana must be at least 6 feet long... >.>

other then like sephiroth and cloud no other ff character comes to mind that was a oversized weapon o.O

Tidus' weapons and Zidane's double bladed swords were pretty big too. Same with Great Sword/Axe in XI and those two handers in XII. But other then those few they are pretty sizable(see: pretty normal) in many of the past games.

Reminds me of the sense of disappointment I felt as a child watching "Peter Pan," seeing the titular character fight off pirates with an effing letter opener. Small weapons just don't seem right in a work of fiction.

Joe Pesci killing a guy with a ball-point pen in "Casino?" Same awkward feeling.

Last night I was babysitting some kits and they hwere watching Peter Pan... it was absolutely horrible! I have no clue why that's rated G... here are my 3 favorite quotes:

Big weapons for big monsters, eh? That's my logic at least. I don't see any other reason to carry around a 50 pound (mabye more) sword....

I say reckon every once in a while. I say ya'll everyday. I tend to type differently than I speak. The only time it really affects me is when I have to call one of my manufacturers in Minnesota or the Northeast. If its an automated service where I have to say numbers or letters, forget about it. If I talk to someone I have to use my terrible Yankee accent so they can tell the difference between my 9's and 5's.


On topic: You know you need those big weapons to fight those huge monsters. You think you could fight Sin or Ruby weapon with any old sword?

I wish people treated this topic with the seriousness it deserves.

They use large weapons because once you reach the point were at lvl 1 you can lift around 1 metric ton (2200ish lb?) of weight that allows you to use big weapons to maximize your range of attack.

Remember regular NPCs (lvl 0) can't do that so they have to settle for using regular sized weapons because they lack the strength and speed to use a larger one.

It's pretty obvious if you ask me.
