I say reckon in RL as part of my everyday vocabulary. Sound like its common in parts of US, even more common in UK.

They have over sized weapons because it's fantasy and fantasy is all about exaggeration.

Reminds me of the sense of disappointment I felt as a child watching "Peter Pan," seeing the titular character fight off pirates with an effing letter opener. Small weapons just don't seem right in a work of fiction.

Joe Pesci killing a guy with a ball-point pen in "Casino?" Same awkward feeling.

Why do Final Fantasy characters have ginormous weapons? Because they are men of ACTION! And women of ACTION! (Let's not forget Yuffies absurdly large shuriken).

See the physics of the world work a lot better if you assume that the characters are all about the size of a action toy. Cloud's not jumping 500 stories in Advent Children, it's really about 3 feet, no more than you're average grasshopper can do.

Yes the weapons are huge, they have to be or they'll present a choking hazard to children under the age of 3 yrs.
