Playing Destiny - PS4 - it's shallow and has many dull elements but I can't stop playing the effin thing

Things I love about it:

1. The Ghosts, even though the name is crappy
2. The mechanics / controls of shooting stuff
3. Scenery / gfx / sfx etc
4. Meeting up with randoms (when my connection doesn't constantly get cut by their servers...(rage!)
5. the little wars that start between rival mobs, the panic, THE CARNAGE!
6. The weaps. vehicles and gear

Things I dislike intensely:

1. That AI
2. The missions
3. The voice acting - none of it seems to fit the characters (such as they are)
4. The characters
5. I can over look the lack of a story if they'd just make the strikes / missions interesting. You don't get much for 500 meelions these days.
6. Server connection crapping out constantly
7. Other stuff I can't think of right now but have raged at the screen for on a few occasions
8. The shit loots. For a casual it simply doesn't pay to play much at all.

It seems blatantly obvious (to the point "why disguise something as light levels when") that as you progress past 20 you [obviously] don't get the XP portion of the mission completions etc but strangely the drops you get just happen to increase your light level by roughly the same amount...hmm.

Hope they fix this game soon.

Hyrule Warriors! - WiiU - best "warriors" game I've played in years. I approve of the Zelda-licensed skin. My son loves this too.

WoW - PC - still don't hate me!

FFXIV - PS4 - occasionally, not sure why I'm still subbed to it tbh...just finding Pugilist really boring atm and should go finish off the other two magic classes (done BLM already)..or is it because post-job cap is dull unless you have enough time to play the larger end-game stuff?

Also my FC is basically dead in the water.

I'm going back to my old standby method of finding games: hearing about good games from people I know whose opinions I trust. It's really the only method that works.

It's why I really like the curator system since a lot of critics are using it to recommend games. The three primary ones I use:

TotalBiscuit: Goes into insane detail to the point where I think he is physically incapable of making a brief and concise critique of anything. Plus he does have a pretty poor opinion on anything that focuses on the narrative unless the gameplay is exceptional. Still he makes it clear where he is being biased and does do his research when it comes to the "WTF is?" videos. Plus he plays a lot of indie games I would likely pass over without anyone taking the time to point out what is good or bad about them.

Jim Sterling: For being brutally honest and open. Plus he is the only critic out there that gives the Warriors series of games a fair shot. That and he is a very strong consumer advocate.

Angry Joe: For buying every game he reviews and playing it to completion before putting out that review. Also he's pretty open when he is being biased about something and is willing to point out what a game does well even if it is a flop (like Destiny). I'll also admit to being biased towards his opinions above the other two due to him usually having similar opinions to mine over games so I will fully admit I have a degree of confirmation bias when watching Angry Joe's reviews.

If I notice that 2 or more of those 3 have recommended a game, it will probably be worth looking at.

You're tying loot to a kill/death ratio. People who are new or suck have considerably less of a reason to show up if they're just going to walk away empty handed every single time.

How is it punishing them? I'm not saying they shouldn't get anything, but getting Legendaries/Exotics/Coins etc is a bit much.

I dunno, because the game's PvP is set up very much like Halo's - that is to say it's extremely unforgiving to the unskilled. If people want good rewards in PvE, they have to be good themselves so why should PvP be any different?

Because PvE doesn't require other players and therefore Bungie doesn't need people to stick around in that mode in large numbers.

I understand wanting to be rewarded for exceptional play, but the current system of random rewards means everyone gets equally shafted, and is therefore ultimately the most fair way to keep everyone happy.

Yeah I'm really tired of seeing people who go 0.03 KD with almost no (if any) score getting legendary engrams and or strange coins etc. like WTF... people have been fuming about it since launch.

At least Bungie appears to be listening though, as they're starting to (finally) address player concerns in the next patch.

I think it's fine, actually.

If you only reward people that do well, then the people who are only in Crucible for other reasons than actually enjoying PvP (I count myself in this group) won't come back, and newbies will have no reasons to stay because they'll continually earn nothing in return for repeated defeats.

Sure, it'd be nice to get a pretty new toy or a Strange Coin or something for topping the match leaderboard, but I think it works better this way in terms of keeping the entire playerbase active in PvP, rather than having it just devolve into a clique of PvP specialists.

(and no, I'm not one of those 0.03 KD people... lol)

So the Bungie forums continue to be a seething cesspool of hatred and idiocy. I'm honestly amazed at how I seem to be one (if not the) only people there even remotely concerned that the recent fuck up on their part with this new Queen's Wrath event is going to do to the upcoming Iron Banner event. Essentially people were able to farm a tonne of legendary gear very easily and dismantle it for the items needed to upgrade legendary and exotic equipment, stuff that is normally super rare and takes forever just to get a few pieces.

What baffles me further are the mouth breathers who are defending the method (a lot of them because the game's loot system is a mess, which is still no excuse for abusing an exploit) and claiming that it's fine, that the people who did get a bunch of ascendant materials shouldn't be punished in any way. I can't help but think back to the Salvage bans in XI, which while SE was a bit too heavy handed with that, was still a good judgment call. Bungie's probably too chicken shit though to exercise any form of reprisal in the wake of all the negative reviews.


They did outline the next patch though, and it's looking pretty good - supposed to go live next week. I'm just dreading going into Iron Banner in 2 weeks against people who are level goddamn 30 who by all rights shouldn't be. Oh but in the eyes of the forums they aren't cheaters, no sir, abusing an exploit to obtain exceedingly rare items and crank up to the level cap well before the developers intended couldn't possibly be cheating...
