Little things that make you smile - the anti-peeve thread.
Don't think I'd recommend Elfen Lied to anyone looking for romance. The romance felt really secondary and I mostly just remember the killing, maiming, and suspense over who's going to get killed next.
Might want to try Lovely Complex. It's a high school romance between a tall girl and a short guy. Nodame Cantabile is good too.
If you saw the anime, can't blame you. Manga, completely different ball game.
Synopsis - Lucy is a diclonii, woman with invisible arms, mistreated as a child, one person becomes her friend, they make a promise, she loses her memory when she gets older, same guy shows up from childhood, she falls in love, maims, kills, hurts anything that gets near him. Among other things. Which is why it's a Dark Romance, since it doesn't get a happy ending.
I would explain the anime I am watching, but people here would call me disgusting for the series albeit the maturity of some people I question entirely to begin with.

Yes.
invisible arms?
To be clear, she has visible arms, but in addition to those she has several invisible limbs that can reach quite a distance and cut through flesh on contact. To bystanders it looks like she has the ability to cut you with her mind.

No they're considered invisible, they're called Vectors, they have a range I believe of 6 meters. There is a man she fights in the series in which she rips his eyes out using them. In a more brutal scene however she kills a woman by removing her head and using her body as a shield. In the manga a man loses a gun that goes towards her tank and other people warn him not to get the gun. He is stupid, gets into striking range of her vectors and she rips him to pieces. However if Lucy or another diclonii experience pain they cannot use their vectors. Here is a small share I found funny on youtube after I watched the series. Made me laugh. It does contain spoilers, but no real speech is given, due to the musical overlay.
Warning: Scenes are gore related. You make the choice whether to watch it or not.
Elfen Lied Stuff
That is Mariko, she is the first diclonii to have over 6 arms and can reach over a good range of I believe 10-20 Meters. Longer than Lucy, however due to her killing tendencies, she had a C4 place in her arm before she was released, which explains the loss of her arm and in the scene she screams in pain, where as a team seizes her. Later on in another scene, a soldier goes to walk into her room, only to be grabbed by her vectors, thrown into a hallway and then ripped to pieces.
She rips the arms off another girl like wings off a fly and giggles in enjoyment as she continually slams her head into the ground from 10 feet or more.

I think I'd have passed out from having my arms ripped off. The head slamming is just delicious filler after the fact.
I seem to remember her slicing a little girl to pieces as well.
Elfen Lied Stuff
That was Kohta's sister who got cut in half on a train. Lucy killed her out of rage due to being made fun of, NOT knowing that it was Kohta's sister until after he flips shit on her. After that moment Lucy swore never to hurt anyone close to Kohta again, since she means everything to him. Which is why she kills people OUT of his sight, such as her nightly trips into cities/army bases to gather information. Early on in the series Kohta's cousin shows up along with Lucy who engaged a girl named Nana, AFTER the fight I believe Lucy attempts to leave and Kohta's cousin steps in and says something. Lucy, still pissed off, bitch smacks his cousin with her vector and knocks her down to the ground and she goes "Something hit me." indicating obvious jealousy when Kohta is around other females.
There is also another horrific scene in the series where they got into Lucy's past, where she is tortured and bullied as a child, the bullying continues and she seeks out a "friend" a young girl tries to help her but fails. This being her and Lucy find an abandoned puppy, Lucy's supposed "friend" then snitches on where the puppy is and then the bullies proceed to hold Lucy down while they beat the puppy to death. In a fit of rage Lucy unleashes hell upon the classroom and awakens her inner diclonii (Killing intent) and murders the room full of children. While stating, "The only ones who are monsters here, are you!" The scene then ends with Lucy standing in the middle of a blood splattered room of dead children. The anime is not made for the weak of heart. :x

One way to make that train scene less depressing...
