My family went last summer and we met one of our family friends who lives there, asked him to take us to the SE headquarters, we went up the elevator, walked around a bit, didn't really see anything except DQIX posters and then left for their official shop. Bought a few plushies and called it good.

Also saw the Nintendo headquarters... a big grey building in a random place in Kyoto. Tried to get close but the security guard made sure that didn't happen. Probably used to tourists...

Congrats. It's dangerous to go alone without proper knowledge, though. Take this.

You know Japan wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't full of Japanese people.

Feba, are you going to be taking classes or is this the program where you'll be teaching Japanese kids to speak English?
Grats on getting to go. I'm sure you'll find most of this out before you go, but always have your papers on you wherever you go. I'm sure you'll learn Japanese some before you go and get a lot better while you're there, but my friend said if you're pulled aside by a police officer and asked for your papers, just pretend you don't speak Japanese and hand them your papers. Apparently they're much less likely to hassle you if you have your papers and that can't really communicate with you.
Don't let anyone order sushi for you unless you know them. My friend had only been there a couple weeks when a guy walked up and started ordering stuff for him, turned out he was ordering the 10 bucks a plate stuff.

Thanks! It's always hard to find good guides to etiquette, this should prove to be most useful.

It's a normal study abroad program; I had an ESL program lined up for this summer in Mexico but wasn't accepted. Generally, English teaching opportunities in Japan are limited to people who already have their Bachelor's.

Yeah, considering they can hold you for three weeks without any charges at all, and not having your Alien Registration Card on you pretty much means a trip to the station at a minimum, that's something I'm going to have to adjust to. I rarely leave the house with my wallet in the states, since I simply don't need it most of the time.

And actually, my Japanese is already somewhere around the boundary between elementary and intermediate. I've been looking at it since before I started playing FFXI, and started to buckle down on it about a year ago; took classes and so on. Good enough where I can watch simple shows and pick up enough to follow along, or have simple conversations. Reading anything without furigana (phonetic guide that goes with kanji) is still rough, and even with it simple manga are still a bit beyond my reach; some of that is slang though.

Re: Mew mew mew! Japan: The best country of all time?! I'm giong! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE

I wouldn't worry too much about eating or ordering Sushi for now.
Even in Japan real sushi is pretty expensive so not something you eat every day.

Heck, of all the times I've been in Japan I have eaten sushi a total of zero times.
Sure there are those all you can eat places, but they usually serve the same mass produced stuff I get in the Chinese all you can eat places here in Holland.
It's not that bad, but in my opinion it isn't real Sushi either.

I'm not 100% sure how living in Japan works but I do know that eating out is fairly affordable when you know where to go.
Places I regularly go to eat when in Japan are:
Coco ichibanya: CURRY HOUSE CoCo ICHIBANYA
They serve curry, very good curry in spice grades between 0 and 10.
As curry eater you are allowed to go up to level 5, and may only go higher when you can eat a whole plate of the previous level in front of them.
(From personal experience if you are a starter that 'is used to' spicy food, start with a level 2 or 3.)
(Ever see a 6'3" 200LB guy cry? I have! Me when I took the level 4, and trust me I've eaten spicy food before!)
Besides that they serve a good tonkatsu along with the curry and rice.

                                Fugetsu: Okonomiyaki FUGETSU
                                My favorite dish, Okonomiyaki.
Japanese food usually lacks of fibers, Okonomiyaki's main ingredient being cabage makes this meal a good source for them.
They are served with different ingredients and toppings and in different sizes and they prepare these at your table!
You can also have udon noodles baked along with the okonomiyaki, but they call that modanyaki (Modern bake).

And of course the local noodle places and Japanese style bars.

If you don't feel like eating out, there's about 2 to 4 Combini (Convenience stores) per block with a huge assortment of food to take and prepare at home or meals they can warm up for you inside the store.
Most common Combini in Tokyo are:
7/11, Lawson (Here you can also get tickets for events), Family Mart and AM/PM.
