I'm undecided on where I stand on this actually. However if we accept this as true, a unified and homogenized peaceful society would bring about continued peace. However our world is not like that, so we get plenty of folks imprinted with less than saintly dispositions. Achieve unified rule and creating an entirely peaceful and harmonious society becomes a possibility. With no negative aspects to absorb from society, conflict ceases to be an issue.

Is it really now? You only object to the idea because you've been raised in a radically different society where you have access to different examples of how a society can function. If you'd been born and raised in the unified society I described and that's all anyone had known for countless generations I think you'd be quite content. No conflict, no power struggle, no endless political bickering, no "them" only an "us". You wouldn't think it was some horribly atrocity, you'd be content to continue the status quo. That's exactly what the human race has been doing for thousands of years, except in our case the status quo involves constant conflict between the "us" and the "them".

Do continue. I find this dance entertaining.

And since no such cuture has existed or will ever exist, how can you assume this is how it would function? Who's going to govern? What are the laws? There has to be a basis for the rule of law, too. What's the basis?

You think there won't be winners and losers there? That there won't be a ruling class and that ruling class won't be incorruptable? That there won't be people with different opinions?

I feel sorry for you that you think the system we have is the worst it can get. You are living in the most assimilated culture on the planet, a place where you probably have the most opportunity to succeed at all.

But if you want to stay at home and not vote, well, you're doing the rest of us a favor at least. One less vote to compete with ours and one with no heart behind it anyway.

Not necessarily. Even in a peaceful society, misfortunes can still befall individuals: natural disasters, bad investments, relationships that didn't work out, accidents, illnesses, or someone you love becoming the victim of one of these. Negative experiences can turn people jaded or selfish depending on the severity of the experience and that person's upbringing, which is a huge variable - different couples of what can be considered to be "good" people can bring up their children very differently. People can also have moments of weakness.

There will always be hardship in life, and not everyone handles hardship gracefully. Even the most peaceful and unified society will see some level of discord among its people. That doesn't mean we should consider peace a lost cause or that we should give up on other people. Your peers are what will keep you in check when you have a lapse of judgment or fall into depression, and if you can't believe there's good in humanity as a whole then why not just be selfish? But selfish action perpetuates the very thing you're criticizing. The only useful outlook is to believe in the kindness of others and breed kindness where there is none.

That's a rather tough sell as of late though.

Historically speaking, we're about due for another major war or some other global crisis. For me, it's not that I don't want to believe in human empathy/decency, it's just that so many things and people are making it more and more difficult.
