The one upside I see to a McCain presidency is that it would probably make it very easy to flee the country as a refugee.

Wait, what's the Dutch National Anthem?

Um. You should probably know that it's just "O Canada". No "h, ".

              holy crap this is scary.

Q: Have you ever traveled outside the country, besides your trip to Kuwait and Germany last year?
              Palin: Yeah; Canada, Mexico...

Q: You do believe [that the Russian occupation of South Ossetia/Abkhazia] was unprovoked?
              Palin: I do believe unprovoked.

Thinks putting Georgia into NATO and going to war with Russia would be fine.

Says that because we're 'friends of Israel' we shouldn't second-guess them if they make a preemptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Approves of wars started as preemptive strikes, and invading countries in the name of 'stopping Islamic extremists'.

How in the world is the media letting McCain get away with this choice?

Thought some of you might enjoy this. It came about because the Polar Bear has been put on the endangered species list which has angered Palin. Seems her oil drilling buddies might get their noses bent over this since it will limit where they can drill.

I'd be more concerned with what the people are letting the media get away with.

The media is running scared and will turn anything to thier advantage for the sake of getting your attention and ratings/ad money from your viewer/readership.

For the last ten years they've been running scared. It all started with those dirty college kids using Napster to download MP3s, then iPod came, the rise of online gaming, the popularity of blogs, YouTube and new media news sources from all over the world becoming accessable from a few clicks. They're running scared because they can't control this kind of stuff.

The newspapers I read today are of amazing contrast from what I was reading just a few years ago. The AP style, the who/what/when/where/why/how method is now getting saddled with the opinion of the writer - that shit isn't supposed to happen in hard news of any kind, not even sports news and now it happens there, too. People make a fuss over the liberal media or conservative media - both are bad, both sensationalize and distort to news to tell you what to think. Very few of them are beholden to the truth anymore.

And they know that they've lost most of the people 35 and under, that they no longer hold sway in the face of these changes, they sensationalize anything in order to get your attention.

I'll point out again that both Obama and McCain have lashed out at the media for thier actions. Some outlets are blowing off these criticisms, still thinking they're doing holy, unbiased work when and a handful of media outlets are taking it to heart and thinking about what the media has become.

The media's obligation is to the people and the facts, not advertising money, not Washington, not the democrats and not the republicans. That media now only seems to exist in the pages of comic books.

At least the ideal still exists, maybe they'll stumble back upon it sometime.

I kinda agree with your general point, but I disagree on one thing: a lot of these things COULD be used to draw attention. I mean, a politician lying with every or nearly every single ad released is something that people would be interested in. A politician going on stage and simply lying to people is something that people would like to see. Frankly, there's enough going on with the McCain campaign that you could have each major news network covering another segment of lies and hypocrisy, and competing to find which ones will draw the most attention.

Why was Bristol Palin's pregnancy (and a false report of a previous pregnancy) so important from a politcal viewpoint? I mean, yeah, this was going to come out either way, but to make a parade of it days after Palin was named the nominee is a tad opportunistic to me.

All I've heard about Biden since he was announce has that he makes less money than most of the US Senators. He still makes $320,000 a year though. Its cute lip service, but he still makes more money than you, me or anyone else on this forum. This is interesting, but not useful information for voters - what else has he done besides make more than the average middle class American?

Exactly. I mean, there IS a valid political point there ("Sarah Palin doesn't want to give kids proper sex education... but if she can't even make abstinence work for her own family, how can she hope to make it work for yours?"), but nobody touched on that. The coverage of it was material worthy of checkout line tabloids, not major media outlets. I mean, compare it to PALIN FAMILY SHOCKERS: WHAT SARAH'S REALLY HIDING! - Celebrity News | Gossip - National Enquirer (Although the Enquirer has actually become more reliable lately. See: John Edwards; not that anyone actually cares, and The National Enquirer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

I have to agree that the media doesn't care about Biden; but is that really so out of the ordinary? I don't remember previous elections, but he's not really that amazing of a character. And then with everyone tripping over themselves trying to expose all of Palin's crap, and the controversies the McCain campaign keeps trying to stir up ("If you can't win legitimately, just make it impossible for anyone to keep up with all of your lies."), there hasn't really been much time to discuss Biden except the short bit of time between his announcement and the DNC.
