  • SSD Improvements ... in maybe 10 years?

NAND flash gets baked, lives longer | Ars Technica

Basically, NAND atm, including in SSDs, are very short lived and are terrible for archival/enterprise purposes (which is why you don't see anyone advocating SSDs as a primary network storage/backup solution ... and not because of the cost) With rehabilitating these cells, having life extended on the order of multiple folds is a big leap in improvement. I just wonder how long it will be before it becomes commercially available?

    That's pretty awesome stuff.

800C though? Yikes, can that even be done safely without damaging other components?! I imagine that's the problem they're working on right now (not to mention the costs). But in the long run, this will hopefully make SSDs more viable and cheaper.

That's very clever. I wonder if they can do some material engineering and maybe find some variant materials to make the NAND flash cells where the required temperature could be lowered to something more practical than "might as well be an arc welder".
