  • Does this sound like a hard drive problem?

Ok i bought my computer from Cyber Power Inc. and i had to send it back to them to fix for thier was a problem with it. It was overheating with the fan it had so they got me a new one (for free) and thats fixed.

Now, i got it back and when i turned the computer on, it wouldnt get passed the BIOS and i couldnt go to windows. The company said they did nothing to replace the hard drive or anything, only the fan.

I called them and told them that BIOS goes really slow and when i tried to reinstall windows, an error message came up saying 'there are no hard disks installed' so i couldnt download windows on my computer. The guy at the company said that all i needed was a new hard drive.
What do you guys think? Does this sound like my hard drive is damaged?

when you have an overheating problem alot of stuff could be damaged. to me it sounds like your hard drive just went byebye. an to me the company you got your sytem back from should replace your drive.. cause it was their faulty fan that caused this.

my suggestions. install new hard drive. install extra fans, an up the watts of your power supply..

Might be a jumper set wrong, ive done that before had jumpers set wrong. And it went extreamly slow. You might want to check that on your own.

Oh so you think its my hard drive? Good because yeh the company is sending me another one free of charge. Please everyone DO NOT BUY FROM CYBER POWER! they have a chinese girl who sounds like shes on drugs and a mexican chinese guy who does know what the hell hes talking about..

Also, when i got my comp back, the idiots sent me 2 empty boxes. One was a mother board for freakin AMD 64 and another was something for Intel Pentium 4. I have AMD XP!!. Those people are seriously retarded. And when i opened my case, it looked like someone literally jacked off on the clear part, not kidding.

it sounded to me like something i had experienced with my old system. so when i went to build my new system i was going to use my old HD as a gaming drive. so i didnt clog my other HD. turns out it was dead. an what you described sounds exactly like what mine did days before it crashed.

Easiest way to figure it out is borrow someones HD, put it in your pc, see if it tries to boot normal(it wont boot windows) but just see if it does try, and see if it runs slow or not.

How old is your hard drive?

Generally, most hard drives don't live for a long time. Usually around 5 years lifespan is somewhat high for a harddrive. only with proper cooling, and monitoring, can a harddrive live for a long time.

If your HD is doing what you say it is doing (pausing at the bios detecting it) then there are a few reasonable causes for that:

1- the HD itself is going bad
2- the IDE cable that connects to the HD could be going bad, you want to make sure the connectors on it aren't coming loose.
2a - jumpers, if set incorrectly, is known to slow down autodetecting sometimes.
3- last but not least, your whole system may going bad, most likely the symptom of a dying power supply. Generic power supplies (that come with the cases) are known to be total crap. Over a certain percentage (probably well over 80%) fail within a certain time. Manufacturers cut back on qualities of power supplies in order to make up for the cheap costs of the case. Check out the post i made on the last page of the benchmark 2 sticky at the top of the page to learn more about that.

This is why I love Western Digital Harddrives I still have a 10 MB one that still works perffectly >.>

The Western Digital Drives the only time they ever don't last it is very immediate and usually just a faulty one out of the group. However with Seagates and Maxtor Harddrives i have to agree 5 years is quite a long time for them, most of the Seagates and Maxtors I have couldn't last 3 years.

                      EDIT:

More clarity the 10 MB Western Digital Drive is about 14-16 years old.

Out of the 12 Western Digital Drives I've gone through only 2 ever went bad and usually was within 2-3 weeks of purchasing. Of course those 2 were replaced and all of the WD HDs I have all still work fine. The 8 seagates and maxtors I have are all dead, every one of them only lasted about 3 years.

Ive only had my computer since xmas 04..

Hopefully when my computer was overheating is what cause the HD to fail.

(My CPU was overheating at 150+ fahreinhieght, thats fixed now and its at like 80 f. now)
