  • New MoBo old hard drive

I plan on getting a new case, mobo, processor, but keeping my current hard drive, would I need to do anything to windows or my registry settings?
Or would it be better for me to use a new hard drive with a fresh XP install?

It would be best to format the drive first. Using the same install, Windows would still have drivers for all your old components. Unless your getting a new mobo with the same chipset drivers (like VIA, unified drivers) it won't boot. I've tried that when my bro got an upgrade. Went from a VIA KT133 to an NForce 2. A clean format will be nice anyways. This is where it comes in handy having seperate partitions so you don't lose everything. Unless you can back it up ok.

Well, i might throw out another 100$ and grab a new copy of XP.
That way I can effectivly have 2 PCs.
One with the old case/vid card/mobo/processor/screen/stick of RAM
then get the new case/mobo/processor/vid card(ATI 9800pro ) and throw in one of this PCs disk drives.
But then I have to use wiring to network them...
      hmm.
If I have ethernet card+router on other and a wireless adaptor on the other, should that allow me to share DSL?(using netgear wireless)?
Also is it a good idea to switch my CDRW to my master on the old PC and use the DVDROM drive as master on the new one?(the CDRW is slave currently)

I could get a second PC for a little under 1.5k which really is a sweet deal, considering the new PC will have an ATI, 3GHZ and 60GB of memory.

Otherwise I would have a ton of spare parts, which would really suck...

        and 60GB of memory.
OMG, that's OVERKILL!! I doubt the mobo suports that much anyways. You would also need a 64bit processor to support over 4 GB (4 TB max).

          hehehe

You are probably mixed up between memory and disk storage. 60GB = disk storage. To have that much in System RAM would cost....millions and millions of dollars

            Yeah.. 60GB disk space
            512MB RAM
Most mobos could only hit 1.5-2GB RAM anyway, I'm not sure I have seen more then 4 RAM slots on any mobo I have looked at.
512MB has served me well so far on this computer, and frankly, if ffxi has no memory leaks, then I should be fine with 512MB on my new PC.
