Stupid question, but have you watched the Ghost in the Shell series? If not they're totally worth watching. Also, have you seen the new FMA series, or just the original? They start off very similar, but the new one is very different in the long run. Some other personal favorites of mine are Read or Die, both the OVA and the actual series itself, Gundam 08th MS team, The Gokusen and Outlaw Star (which you've most likely seen to be honest). The Nanoha series is also pretty decent, a more actiony take on the magical girl genre, though I never finished the last series myself it was still a pretty good series.

I been out of the anime loop for a long time now myself, I should really get back into this stuff. I barely know what's what anymore.

Is the series all that different from the OVAs? Because I watched one of the OVAs(forget which one) and could not for the life of me figure out what all the fuss was about.

Err, I don't think there were any GitS OVAs. There were about three movies, the original which is loosely based on the comics. A direct sequel to the first movie and the third film, which was based off the two series rather then the original movies.

The two series themselves however are freaking fantastic. Very mature (as in serious and thought provoking, though it does have it's share of sex/violence/gore, though none excessively graphic), well written stories, a lot of light hearted, almost endearing humor, lots of character development and some kick ass action sequences. It's also very consistently high quality through out both seasons. It's one of those high quality, must see anime series that could easily rival even "serious" live action stories and entertainment in how it's handled.

Edit: yea, GitS never had any OVA stuff, it was two theatrical release films, one TV release film and the two TV series.

Yep seen GITS and FMA but my son is trying to talk me into watching that newly released FMA (Brotherhood). I LOVED Read or Die. I've seen Outlaw Star and I've tried some Gundam but couldn't really get into it. I'll look up Nanoha and The Gokusen though, never heard of that one. Thanks Ziero, my list grows longer and my time grows shorter! lololol

The new FMA is actually based entirely on the manga. The original started out the same then took some acid and decided to do their own thing. (Think Ghostbusters and Original Ghostbusters cartoons). Manga was incredible and thats what Brotherhood is based upon.

FYI, if you've quit reading manga because of OneManga going down, then there is hope. Mangafox has everything that isn't licensed (so far only Bleach, Naruto, and FMA that I can tell). You can get every issue of Naruto at narutoverse.blogspot.com and new issues of Bleach and Naruto at mangastream.com. I haven't found a place to read old issues of Bleach and FMA but I haven't actually looked for them.
I just started reading and got caught up on Fairy Tail. Its all on MangaFox. Also understand that there's an anime that started a year or two ago, as well.

No, problem. Also forgot to mention Keishou.net they carry a lot of the more popular ones as well as the accompanying anime, as well.
Mangastream's scans are annoying in that they put a bigass watermark at the bottom of every page. I've kinda gotten used to it, and its nice that they post scanlations on Wednesday night for Bleach and Naruto (as opposed to Thursday night or Friday elsewhere). Sleepy Fans also do a better job of translating than mangastream's team, so I usually read it when it first drops on Mangastream to get it sooner, then re-read it on narutoverse a few days later when Sleepy Fans have done it. Its particularly nice for the issues that are harder to follow because of shaky translating (like the last few). I'll look for a site with old issues of Bleach thats still updating and let you know what I find.

I never heard of The Gokusen either until I watched it on one of them cable movie channels. It would come on at like 12:30 at night (not because it's graphic, but because they hate anime) and it turned out to be pretty entertaining. Not the greatest series in the world, but I liked the characters and the concept involved. It was overall a light hearted/actiony short little series.
