I've seen Evangelion. It was good, but robots / mecha is not my cup of tea. It was good, just not what i prefer.

I can't say I ever got into Elfein Lied, but if you like 'adult'(in a non-porn sense) style anime with lots of gore, I'd recommend Berserk. It's a medieval-ish fantasy anime done in a very serious way. Though be prepared to /rage at the ending and then spend a fortune buying up the comics to get the full story over wtf you just saw.

Really? I didn't mind how the ending didn't quite match the manga. In fact I thought the way they ended the series was perfect. Regardless it's still a damn good anime.

Where did I ever say anything about it being good? I said popular and influential, which you can not deny that NGE is both of those things. At one point it was the most watched animated series in the world, has been in the main stream anime spotlight since it's creation despite not actually having anything new done with it for nearly a decade, and literally made Gainax into the company it is today. At the time, for what it was and how it was made, it was a massive success for both Gainax themselves as well as Anime in general, and really helped push the popularity of the anime to a new level. Like it or not, the show made a massive impact on the world of Anime and is one of the most widely known and loved anime series out there today.

I think you need to go watch it again. It's not a mecha show, certainly nothing like the ones that were out at the time of it's release. Obviously the Seinfeld effect plays into this some; now that it's out, it's hard to appreciate it for what it is after you've seen the things it has influenced. It's still a damn good show though.

Eh, perhaps, but never to the point where it's being pretentious for the sake of being pretentious. Even if you don't keep up with the SEELE/NERV plot and conflict of what's actually going on, there's still a perfectly good show to be found in the impact it has on the characters as things go on; whether it makes sense to you or not.

It also depends on how familiar you are with the subject matter. I wouldn't quite call it conspiracy theory shows, but there are things like this that simply rely on real world theories that aren't completely common knowledge-- Serial Experiments Lain, Metal Gear Solid being other good examples. The big difference being that series like MGS love to show off how much research they did into it. MGS has the freedom to launch on a 20 minute diatribe explaining precisely how some obscure technology works even if it's not that important to the plot. A television show doesn't, so it seems like NGE is keeping a lot more from you than it really is.

Either way, I would hardly consider being self-referential or weird to be a huge sign of pretentiousness nowadays-- but then I'm the sort of guy that thinks MGS2's ending is a work of genius.

It is pronounced "Fooly Cooly." As for what it actually means or is, I don't think any sane human being could tell you. Maybe a cthulu occultist or something could explain it for you.

The humor of the series also lies within its crazy absurdity absurd craziness and randomness, which is a sort of humor that I can really get behind, personally. It helped that the entire mini-series was pretty much completely experimental, as well. I rather liked FLCL.

It's one of those shows that really doesn't make sense the first time you see it, but the more you watch it the more you realize how deep and creepy it actually is. The fact it's only 6 episodes long and frequently replayed on Adult Swim makes it easier to re-watch.
