Of course, believing that the Evangelions were simple robots was one of the many things that made the series so damn good.
But I do agree that it seems insulting to be so enthusiastic only about the violent action scenes of Evangelion. There is so much more to it than the violence, even though the fights are amazingly done. I wouldn't consider EVA to be a "hardcore" series like that though, as the focus of the series isn't the action, isn't the violence, and isn't even the Evangelions.
If you're asking about over the top extremely gorey hugely violent series, I would have to say that 3x3 Eyes is the most gruesome thing I've ever seen.
