  • Anime Files Question

    Hello

I was looking over a recent anime that I came across and I noticed files with names like OGM, MKV, and SFV

Does anyone have the time to tell me what exactly are these files for and how I can go about running them?

    Thanks ^^

    Re: Anime Files Question

OGM = Ogg Media File (Video File)
MKV = Matroska Video File (Can have multiple audio channels, subtitles, etc like DVD)
SFV = Simple File Verification (A check file, you don't play this... very small check file)

I use VLC Player for all my videos, you can play a video and right click to look at all the options that video has. Like a DVD player

My friend recommended this to me and it solved all my playback problems:

Apparently this is the agreed upon set of codecs and filters by most of the fansubbing community.

Thanks a ton for the reply

One more thing, does anyone noticed that when downloading like a series of anime episodes (like say 5), when you preview the 1st one it's all fuzzy and everything?

        One last question ^^

What's the deal about something called BitComet? Is it like the Bit Tornado and stuff like that?

          Re: Anime Files Question

I've never noticed that fuzziness problem. It might just be that whatever files you're looking at weren't made from originals of the same quality.

BitComet is another bittorrent client like Bit Tornado. Different client software has different features, but any bittorrent software will download from any torrent.

            Re: Anime Files Question

Just so you know mkv and ogm are only containers, such that whether you can play it or not does not depend on the extension, but what it's actually encoded in.

1.mkv encoded in WMV3 and using AC3 would need the proper decoders.
            while
2.mkv encoded in Divx and using mp3 would be much easier due to its open sourced nature.

A mac/unix/linux/old computer/ect would not play WMV3 mkv, or ogm under any circumstance because MS would not let it roam on anything but WMP, or something that borrows WMP as a decoder.

There are slight differences between ogm and mkv, where bascially many called mkv the true version of a dvd rip. Bascially both do the same thing, containers that can hold multiple audio and subtitle streams, but ogm seems to not be able to do some kinds of subtitles.

But yes, pay attention for any notes that tell you what kind of encoding it is in, and if say videolan says "WMV3" then you'll need WMP(with a few things). Generally 90% will be in divx(of 1 form or another) with MP3.

Another note, get videolan 0.8.1 for playing mkv even though 0.8.2 is the latest. mkv is drastically slower, and choppy for some reason when playing mkv, reverting back to .8.1 will fix it.

              Re: Anime Files Question

              Hm........

Well the I am downloading Gundam Wing (It's old, but a favorite ^^) and there are two types of files

              Episode 1-40 is .divx505.ogm
              Episode 41-49 is .xvid.mkv

So if I understand correctly, Episdoes 41-49 are like DVD quality and Episodes 1-40 will not have subtitles, correct?

Oh and what's the factor in the "Download rate"? Is it the amount of seeders? I mean my download rate was at 200 Kib/s this morning and tonight it dropped back down the average 20-30s margin.

              Thanks for the help ^^

                Re: Anime Files Question

Speed of a bittorrent download can vary widely depending on the number of seeders and leechers and also which of those you're personally connected to. You might have been connected to a really fast seed the first time you joined the swarm and just didn't find him the second time.

Your download rate also tends to be proportional to your upload rate, so if you weren't uploading as much at night that could explain it.

I see ^^ Thanks. I find that my upload rate is usually on the average higher then my download rate

Both should have subtitles. xvid is just one variation of divx, most modern day players can play both in that respect.

It is possible for ogm or mkv to not have subtitles. Some people can just encode in ogm for no reason without subtitle files or multi sound track(It has happen though I don't know why, but there are wacky people out there)

But they should both have subtitles track. Mkv should also have the dvd version of subtitle track...which is needed for certain reasons.

                      Okay thanks ^^

Now one LAST question (for real this time ^^)

I want to burn these files onto a CD so it doesn't kill my Hard Drive, but obviously I can't burn all of them to just 1 CD, but I'm not sure which files I should put on the CD.

                      The files are...

                        Re: Anime Files Question

Umm... You should watch the last 3. The file name looks like they are just ending and the 2 opening credits. And there's no play list in that list so it doesn't look like its needs those files to make a "complete" episode.

You really don't need a-l.gundam.wing.complete.sfv at all except to verify the data if you copy the files to another computer (to make sure nothing was garbled or the disk is bad). Either way, a-l.gundam.wing.complete.sfv should be a small enuf file to toss it on all the cds/dvds.

                              Re: Anime Files Question

Gundam wing is actually one of the better Gundam series. Good plot and animation. A lot of the gundams (like F-91) does sucks.

As for BGC, since it was made in the 80s (I mean the oav, not the piece of crap tv show), it's really dated...

Besides, it's a personal choice really. I have friends who prefer hard suit mech anime over giant robot and vice versa. I like both if they are done well.
