At the following time, we performed a version update of FINAL FANTASY XI.

* This update consists of a version upgrade of the client program for the PlayStation(R) 2 version ("Windows" and Xbox 360 versions will not be updated). When you press the play button after the time stated below, the version upgrade will begin automatically. Please follow the instructions on the screen.

YAYYYY!! I've waited for 2.... WHOLE..... LONG.... DAYS......
for this site to come back! /sigh! I never even knew there was a problem in the first place until I tried to access this site, giving me a box with some kind of message saying that the site didn't exist and please try back in 48hrs. /sigh!

I guess I cannot complain though. 48hrs is what it said, and 48hrs is definitely how long it took to sort out the problem.... whatever it was!

But what I don't understand is, if they updated the game to make a fix for the PS2, then I presume that PoL would have been down for them at that time too.
But what does PoL being down have to do with with this site being down too?
There's probably something I'm not understanding correctly here.

The site downtime had absolutely nothing to do with the POL or Final Fantasy XI downtime. So yes, you are not understanding correctly at all.

I really hope so! But how can you be so sure? You're not a member of the Square Enix team, or anyone else qualified to fix things like this, are you?

I'm not saying that anything WILL.... break again, but I'm crossing my fingers in the hope that nothing bad like this will ever happen again in the future.

The site downtime had absolutely nothing to do with the POL or Final Fantasy XI downtime. So yes, you are not understanding correctly at all.

Then please could you (or anyone out there at all really) explain why this site has been down for 2 whole days?

Unless it was just because they wanted to update it, and that it was a sheer coincidence that 2 downtimes occured at the same time.
But again..... I'm only guessing really.

It's been stated many times that this site was created by one person (or a few people) to talk about the game with fellow North American's when it was first imported into the states. This site has nothing to do with SE officially. It was just a coincidence that both "were down".

It was, in fact, a complete coincidence. Ping (the site owner and administrator) took the site down to implement some changes. It just happened to coincide with whatever SE was doing. He mentioned it some time prior to the downtime.
